Afshin Rattansi talks to Lauren Booth, broadcaster and journalist after the arrest of Professor Jeff Halper.

Minnesota-born Halper, an Anthropology lecturer from Ben Gurion University who also chairs the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions, was among dozens of international activists who sailed from Cyprus over the weekend in an attempt to break an Israeli naval blockade of the coastal enclave.

Halper was arrested after he passed through the Erez crossing back into Israel, since he had violated a military order prohibiting Jewish civilians from entering Gaza that was legislated pursuant to the Disengagement in 2005. Police originally thought to release Halper conditionally following preliminary questioning, but apparently decided to keep him in lock-up overnight.

The attempt by western politicians and media to present this week's carnage in the Gaza Strip as a legitimate act of Israeli self-defence - or at best the latest phase of a wearisome conflict between two somehow equivalent sides - has reached Alice-in-Wonderland proportions. Since Israel's deputy defence minister, Matan Vilnai, issued his chilling warning last week that Palestinians faced a "holocaust" if they continued to fire home-made rockets into Israel, the balance sheet of suffering has become ever clearer. More than 120 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza by Israeli forces in the past week, of whom one in five were children and more than half were civilians, according to the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem. During the same period, three Israelis were killed, two of whom were soldiers taking part in the attacks.

AMMAN, March 11--Palestinian Authority chief Mahmud Abbas says that the Israeli occupying regime and the resistance movement Hamas are "agreed in principle" on a truce that will end the crisis in the occupied territories.

The Israeli regime and Hamas appeared Monday to be abiding by a tacit agreement to hold fire in and around the Gaza Strip, amid Egyptian efforts to secure a broader truce deal after a bloody explosion of violence there.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh appreciated "what Egypt is undertaking".

He said Hamas "will help the Egyptian leadership to reach a reciprocal and simultaneous truce that will at the same time lead to the lifting of the blockade imposed on the Palestinian people".

After talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman, Abbas said: "Hamas also wants to protect its leaders and those of Islamic Jihad from the Israelis, and I think Israel agrees on that or has already agreed."

"With the developments in Egypt, I think there is an agreement in principle on that and a deal might be reached in the coming few days," Abbas said in a statement.

RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 23 (UPI) -- Security lined the West Bank streets of Ramallah where U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was meeting Sunday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Cheney's visit to the West Bank is part of his tour of the Mideast, which he began Saturday with strong support for Israel on security matters.

"America's commitment to Israel's security is enduring and unshakable, as is our commitment to Israel's right to defend itself - always -against terrorism, rocket attacks and other threats from forces dedicated to Israel's destruction," Cheney said during a late Saturday news conference in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

After meeting with Abbas, Cheney was scheduled to talk with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, the BBC reported.

WASHINGTON: Blackwater Worldwide, the security contractor blamed by an angry Iraqi government for the shooting deaths of 17 civilians, is not expected to face criminal charges — all but ensuring the company will keep its multimillion-dollar contract to protect U.S. diplomats.

Instead, the seven-month-old Justice Department investigation is focused on as few as three or four Blackwater guards who could be indicted in the Sept. 16 shootings, according to interviews with a half-dozen people close to the investigation.
