Court Interpreter Breaks Confidentiality Code to Speak Out for Workers Rounded Up in Largest Immigration Raid in U.S. History

On May 12th, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested nearly 400 workers at a meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa in the largest immigration raid in US history. Many were sent to prison. We speak with Erik Camayd-Freixas, a professor and Spanish-language court interpreter who was flown into Iowa for the trial. He broke the code of confidentiality among legal interpreters to describe the workers' predicament in what he calls "the saddest procession I have ever witnessed." He says most of the workers were peasants from Guatemala and did not fully understand the criminal charges they were facing. He also says that court-appointed lawyers had little time to meet with the workers, many of whom ended up waiving their rights. [includes rush transcript]

George Bush made a 10% gain in Hispanic voters during his re-election bid in 2004; it is more than likely that the gain would reverse itself into a loss for Republicans come this November.

This time around, pledging to step up immigrant crackdowns throughout the year, the Bush Administration is risking a political fallout with Hispanic voters. The lame-duck President has nothing to lose but it doesn't bode well for the non-teflon Republican Party and John McCain's bid for Presidency.

Regardless of the fact that immigration enforcers claim to be anti-(illegal) immigration and not immigration per se, ICE actions and political rhetoric is nonetheless perceived as just anti-immigrant. And perfectly legal immigrants are being harmed in this so-called anti-(illegal) immigrant climate. Take a look at the Congress economic stimulus package to disallow tax rebates to undocumented workers; it ended up affecting many legal residents who filed joint tax returns with their spouses without social security numbers. In counties like Prince Williams that are now policing immigration, even legal immigrants who perceive hatred and hostility are moving and taking their businesses elsewhere.

The Latino vote is crucial, especially in swing states like Florida, New Mexico, Nevada, and Colorado. Fostering a climate that is heavily perceived as anti-immigrant would undoubtedly turn-off many Hispanic voters, who are the majority of the minority ethnic population and feel targeted due to increased crackdowns and legislation.

First, before you read any further, go watch the trailer for Disney's movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Then, come back so we can talk about it.

You like that? Hmmm?

At a time when writers and producers of material about human Latinos face unprecedented resistance to our material, Hollywood had absolutely no problem green-lighting "Beverly Hills Chihuahua." It will be released in September, which is (coincidentally? methinks not) Hispanic History Month in the United States. Note: The brown male dog hooks up with the whitest female dog ever, and asks, slyly, "Jealous?" Also note, he is "50 percent warrior, 50 percent lover."

Nah, no stereotypes there.

At a time when new information about the incredible complexity of ancient Mayan civilization, writing, language and mathematics is being uncovered, at a time of unprecedented attacks upon those of Mexican descent in this country, at a time when history books are finally starting to admit that many tens of millions more indigenous people were killed in the Americas than previously admitted - this, THIS is what we get from our film industry.

A film industry with a long history of very cozy relationships with government propagandists.

If I hadn't sat in so many meetings where studio execs made comments that would make Jim Crow laws seem enlightened, I wouldn't believe it. But believe it I do. George Lopez and Salma Hayek on board to voice the characters.

Thoughts?

Complete video at: fora.tv

The Cato Institute's Casey Lartigue discusses whether the government has been overall a friend or an adversary for American minority groups.

-----

February is Black History Month, so it's an appropriate time to take a critical look at the way government has treated racial minorities, especially African Americans.

Is government more likely to be the friend or adversary of minority groups? Has it been liberals, conservatives, or libertarians like William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass who have been the most consistent defenders of everyone's rights? What does history suggest would be the best public policy for racial minorities in the 21st century?

Bruce Bartlett, a former Reagan administration economist with a provocative new book, and Casey Lartigue, coeditor of Educational Freedom in Urban America and a controversial former XM 169 talk show host, will discuss these questions - Cato Institute

Casey Lartigue is a former policy analyst with Cato's Center for Educational Freedom. His research expertise includes school choice, teacher quality and minority education. His writings have been published in USA Today, Ed. magazine published at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Education Week, the New York Post, the Washington Times, Asian Week and the Washington Post.

Before joining the Center, he worked as a staff writer at Cato. He has spoken at the National Press Club, Harvard Law School, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, been a guest on the Rush Limbaugh Show, and testified before Congress on school choice in the nation's capital.

Prior to joining Cato, Lartigue taught English and worked as a language examiner in Taiwan and South Korea. Lartigue received a bachelor's degree from the Harvard University Extension School and a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The immigration issue in the U.S. is once again a hot topic of discussion. It is an election year, and the economy is in a downturn. The United States is a nation founded on immigration, however, with every new wave of immigrants, social and economic pressures often cause a backlash. This heats up the debate within the political arena. The most recent wave of immigrants, both legal and illegal, is from Latin America, with the majority coming from Mexico. Is illegal immigration a necessary evil? Or an impossible problem that has to be solved?

For more: linktv.org

Petition: adreamdeferred.org

Every year, dedicated high-school students are denied the chance to attend college, based solely on their undocumented status. These young patriots are doctors who will never get the chance to heal us, teachers who won't be able to educate our children, police and firefighters who will never be able to protect us—all because their dreams have been deferred.

All three presidential hopefuls co-sponsored the federal DREAM Act, yet it has never been made law. The DREAM Act would enable states to grant in-state tuition to these hardworking immigrant students, making higher education (and eventually citizenship) a real possibility.

We need to put pressure on all three presidential candidates to commit to securing America's future by enacting the federal DREAM Act in their first 100 days of office. Sign the petition so that we can show our elected officials that the dreams of students must not be sacrificed to the anti-immigrant, anti-American status quo.

Originally posted at Nuestra Voice.

We have been inundated with the tag line that more people are voting or caucusing in the Democratic primaries than ever before. In fact that is true. The voter surge has been attributed to younger voters showing up for Barack Obama that is only partially true.

In fact now that the dust is settling it is obvious that a sizable part of the voter surge has come from Latino voters. Latino voter turnout is double the number than that of 2004. This remarkable achievement has Latino community organizers smiling but for the most part the media right, left, and mainstream have been largely silent about it.

The media, comfortable with ignoring Latino voters, has for the first time paid some attention to this critical mobile voting block. But credit for the voter “surge” has been totally given to Obama even though Latinos have been largely Clinton voters. This even though Obama supporters like Cong. Luis Gutierrez agree that the outreach that has motivated Latino voters has been largely done by the Clinton campaign.

A Pew Research Center study has been released that contains some intriguing perspectives on how Blacks and Hispanics feel about one another and the issues that confront them. This is an issue that has been widely discussed as of late in the context of the election process and it isn't going away anytime soon.

It's a shame that race in this country still plays such an important role in what we do and how we think. But given the historical reality of this country, it's inevitable, at least for the time being.

Author and activist Ted Nordhaus addresses issues in diversity and the environmental justice movement.

-----

From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility with discussants Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus. Adam Werbach moderates the discussion.

In October 2004, Shellenberger and Nordhaus argued that environmentalism was incapable of dealing with global warming and must die for a new ecological politics to be born. Now, they will make their case for a new "politics of possibility" to replace the old "politics of limits" - from environmentalism to liberalism to conservatism - grounded in changing social values and an expansive new vision of the future - Commonwealth Club of California

Ted Nordhaus is an author, researcher, and political strategist. He is co-author of Break Through and The Death of Environmentalism. Over the last twenty years, Ted has run major campaigns and initiatives for a large assortment of environmental and progressive political causes including the Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs), the Sierra Club, Environmental Defense, and Clean Water Action.

He also served as the Campaign Director for Share the Water, a coalition of environmentalists, fishermen, farmers, and urban water agencies advocating reform of federal water policies in California, Executive Director of the Headwaters Sanctuary Project, and as a partner and political strategist with Next Generation and Evans/McDonough strategy and research firms serving political campaigns and environmental organizations. Ted holds a B.A. in history from the University of California.

Adam Werbach was the former president of the Sierra Club. He is currently the president of Act Now Productions and Iron Weed Films. He is also a member of th San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
