Filmmaker Ben Stewart from talismanicidols.org to discuss his film Esoteric Agenda. This film deals with Population reduction, sacrifice, important dates and the involvement of the UN, WHO, FAO and the Wild lands project. We also talk about food control, codex alimentarius, vitamin ban and how Canada's C-51 law may outlaw natural health products like garlic and bottled water. We end things in the first segment to discuss some uplifting and solution oriented information. Do not miss our very important subscriber interview with Ben Stewart as we dive in to solution oriented material, spirituality, "negativity", individual responsibility and empowerment.

New York Times science writer George Johnson names Antoine Lavoisier's discovery of oxygen as one of the "Ten Most Beautiful Experiments" in science history.

-----

George Johnson, acclaimed New York Times science writer, discusses The Ten Most Beautiful Experiments, an irresistible book about the ten most fascinating experiments in the history of science, drawn from physics, chemistry, biology, and psychiatry.

Johnson takes us to those times when the world seemed filled with mysterious forces, when scientists were dazzled by light, by electricity, and by the beating of the hearts they laid bare on the dissecting table. We see Galileo singing to mark time as he measures the pull of gravity, and Newton carefully inserting a needle behind his eye to learn how light causes vibrations in the retina.

These ten elegant histories remind us of the original romance and excitement of a single soul staring into the unknown.

George Johnson writes regularly about science for The New York Times. He has also written for Scientific American, The Atlantic Monthly, Time, Slate, and Wired, and his work has been included in The Best American Science Writing. He lives in Santa Fe - Cody's Books

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: (talking about Cuban Missle Crisis) ". . . after about five days, the tension eased as it became apparent that the crisis would be resolved peacefully. We were disappointed to be denied our first experience of war but our appetites were whetted and our imaginations fueled. We all looked forward to the occasion when we'd finally have the chance to do what we had been trained to do and discover at last if we were brave enough for the job. But I had also begun to recognize that military service and war were more than an adventure . . .they offered admission into history, possibly a big part of history. A much more daunting enterprise than proving one's mettle with much greater things at stake than proving one's reputation or even the life and death of soldiers"

JOHN MCCAIN: "And through the years, generation after generation of Americans have held fast to the belief that we were meant to transform history. What greater cause than that could we ever find? The global advance of our ideals is not the first responsibility of our military. Our military is not always the best instrument of that cause, though it has certainly served it of necessity and at great sacrifice. But our defense of the possession of them is their responsibility and no other possession has done that so admirably, so selflessly as the United States Armed Services. I wish all Americans the experience of such sublime service to a greater good that I was very lucky to have once had."

JOHN MCCAIN: "Our history has had its moments of shame, and of profound regret but what he have achieved in our brief history is irrefutable proof that a nation conceived in liberty will prove stronger, more decent, more enduring than any nation ordered to exalt the few at the expense of the many or made from a common race or culture or to preserve traditions that have no greater attribute than longevity. But as blessed as we are no nation complacent in its greatness can long sustain it. We too must prove, as those who came before us proved, capable of the work history has assigned to us. Nothing, nothing is inevitable in America. We're the world's leader and leaders don't pine for the past and dread the future. We make the future better than the past.
For more than a century, tens of thousands of native Canadian children were forced to attend residential schools where they were made to adopt the customs of the country's white majority.

But many say they suffered years of physical and sexual abuse.

Now the government is set to formally apologise and pay hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation to victims.

By now you’ve probably heard MSNBC's Courtney Hazlett remark about Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood’s little tiff. If not, watch the video, but I’ll give you the short version. “…Spike Lee got really uppity with Clint Eastwood…”

Huh? What did she just say? Many of you will not understand the impact of her words. Uppity is defined in the standard dictionary as (def.) taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's station; presumptuous; like:

“so and so was getting a little uppity and needed to be slapped down” - dictionary.com

But don’t kid yourself. Most of you lived through the Civil Rights movement, and if you didn’t you’ve seen Roots or Mississippi Burning. You know that the UrbanDictionary is much closer to the everyday meaning of this word. (def) An out of place black person who is out of line and thinks they are as good or better than the white person they are standing next to. Like:

“Rosa Parks was an uppity nigger bitch who thought that she didn't have to move for the white people on the bus.” - urbandictionary.com

I have to admit, I’m kind of surprised that people don’t get that the word is racially loaded. Do I think Ms. Hazlett should lose her job over it? Absolutely not. Call me naïve, call me crazy, but she’s clearly one of the people that doesn’t know how loaded a term it is and I don’t really think it’s her fault. We’ve become a country that likes to hide and push back the negative and not so pretty parts of our history.

I just finished this massive history research project, looking up images from the Jim Crow era and the Civil Rights movement in libraries and historical societies in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia – all the states that were the hotbeds of activity in the 1950s and 1960s. The images I found were of happy people helping one another, Martin Luther King visiting town, and a couple of photographs of children playing. Gone were photographs of police brutality, segregated swimming pools, mobs of people surrounding a group of peaceful protestors…

A search in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Collections for Japanese Internment brings back 16, that’s right 16 photographs. Half of which show people dancing and playing sports and smiling for the photographer. They all seem to say “we are American and we LOVE being ripped from our home and racially profiled for absolutely no reason!”

So do I fault Ms. Hazlett and others who don’t understand the racial implication behind the word “uppity,” who don’t understand my grimace when someone calls me articulate? No. I fault all of us for glorifying the good parts of our history and choosing to forget the ugly racist and mean parts. After all, those who forget history are doomed to have it repeated on Morning Joe and on YouTube and in People Magazine again and again and again.

All of the video was taken (with much thanks and respect) from the Ron Mann film, "Grass -- The History of Marijuana". The "Incarcerex" piece at the end was produced by the good people at the Drug Policy Alliance. And, obviously, thanks ABBA for a cool song no matter how embarrassing it is to admit liking it.

Author David Cay Johnston discusses the history of progressive taxation, and argues that these policies are inherent to a democratic government.

-----

Since 1995 when David Cay Johnston turned his investigative reporting skills to explore the murky waters of tax law, Some tax policy officials now consider him, as one tax law professor put it, "the de facto chief tax enforcement officer of the United States."

Johnston will detail how a strong and growing economy lends itself to job uncertainty, debt, bankruptcy, and economic fear for a vast number of Americans. As tax season draws to a close, come find out who is getting a free lunch and who is picking up the bill - The Commonwealth Club of California

David Cay Johnston was an investigative journalist for The New York Times now focusing on the subject of taxation. He accepted a buyout offer from the Times in April 2008 and is now an independent reporter.

He most recently published Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense and Stick You With The Bill, about hidden subsidies, rigged markets, and corporate socialism. It follows Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich - and Cheat Everybody Else, a New York Times bestseller. Johnston received the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting "for his penetrating and enterprising reporting that exposed loopholes and inequities in the U.S. tax code, which was instrumental in bringing about reforms." He also won the Book of the Year award from Investigative Reporters & Editors.

Robert Saldich is the Chair of the Board of Governors at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, CA.
