The issue in Darfur is as complex as Africa itself. Issues in Darfur began to brew decades before this climactic current genocide. But what is also true, is that there will be decades of reconstruction once peace once again turns the soil here rather than the brunt of rifles.

Before the western region of Sudan known as Darfur became targeted, these villages were of independence regarding food and water and daily life. Through interdependence upon each other, the Darfur people farmed food from very inhospitable ground. This is an amazing thing about this very strong people group.

Having to run (and I mean literally run) from their villages with nothing, they've been made to depend upon outside resources for their daily sustenance. Family groups and villages have been displaced and torn apart, creating a breakdown of their interdependent living structures. Sometimes completely alone, yet in a refugee camp with thousands, a man, woman, or child sits alone as the only survivor of their family...perhaps of their village. This creates isolation even in the most dense of camps.

There will be generations grown who'll be without the education of how to tend the land for food. And suppose if peace came tomorrow--it would be at least a full year before crops would yield. With homes burnt, grain stores destroyed, and deep well water sources intentionally poisoned, there is an entire infrastructure roughly the size of Texas that has collapsed.

We need to be aware, then, that there is more going on in Darfur than just its current turmoil. Once peace comes, there will be generations beyond which will need to learn independence from aid groups. Perhaps we should, then, educate and prepare now for the work that lies ahead once the killing has ceased.

Through interdependence and personal independence, let's help the impoverished and inhumanely treated of the world. It's not an ideal, it's part of our basic human responsibility upon this earth.

To get involved in making a difference for Darfur and other critical issues, a list of links are provided below.

http://www.savedarfur.org/

http://www.lifenets.net/

http://www.oxfam.org/

http://www.unicef.org/

http://bravenewfilms.org/posts//

February 7th, 2008, 8:15 AM

Mainstream media never considered this clip important for the public. Instead mainstream media us the silly sound byte of Sen Biden and Sen Obama quipping about who got test with who. Sen Obama perhaps may be the first presidential candidate to use the "H-word", HOMOPHOBIA and STIGMA concerning the HIV/AIDS crisis in many African American communities. This is by no means an endorsement for Sen Obama, but he clearly is familiar with the problems in our inner cities. Bravo Sen. Obama.
