Hey Bill O’Reilly: Where’s “Your” G.I. Bill?

You may remember that Bill O’Reilly — in response to the heaps of criticism he received for denying the existence of homeless veterans, then claiming that America’s roughly 500,000 homeless vets deserve to be homeless because they’re substance-addicted and mentally ill and that the government doesn't owe homeless vets anything — magnanimously announced that he had discovered that America needs a new and improved G.I. Bill and that veterans are not getting the assistance they need. Acting as if it were his idea, BOR announced:

“WE [that’s the BOR royal ‘we’] are proposing a new G.I. bill with the help of Rep. Peter King (R-NY) and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) that will provide important new benefits for G.I.’s after they leave the service.”

This bill had not even been drafted, but BOR promised to “monitor” its creation and harass any politician who opposed it. When it eventually existed.

That BOR would actually pretend that a new G.I. Bill was somehow his idea is an ego trip of Kanye West-type proportions, as well as an outright lie and a ridiculously inefficient way to help homeless vets who are suffering RIGHT NOW. So what will BOR claim (if he decides to report it) that Sen. James Webb, on his first day in office in January 2007, proposed a new G.I. bill that is “a mirror of the World War II G.I. Bill” and that just five days after BOR’s “big announcement”, Webb, Chuck Hagel (R-NE), and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) held a press conference calling for its implementation?

Senators Jim Webb (D-VA), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) today joined representatives of the nation’s leading veterans’ organizations to advocate comprehensive educational benefits for post-9/11 veterans in the fiscal year 2009 budget. The groups unveiled their Independent Budget to the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs earlier in the day, advocating a “21st Century GI Bill,” similar to the Webb-Hagel bill (S.22) that enjoys widespread support in Congress.

O’Reilly: Drug-Addicted Homeless Vets “Don’t Want to Be Rehabbed”

This clip is from Jan. 23, but I haven’t been able to get to it until now. But it has some very interesting moments that expose Bill O’Reilly’s tactics, as well as his true feelings about homeless vets.

BOR continues his lie that John Edwards blamed homelessness among veterans on corporations and the economy — but watch the “proof” he uses. Around :30 seconds in, BOR shows a clip of Edwards talking about Exxon Mobil's record profits and how America’s top 1% is getting wealthier and wealthier as the rest of America struggles. Both are true — Exxon Mobil posted its biggest profit ever and the gap has increased greatly between the rich and the middle class/poor under the Bush administration. But after Edwards' statement about Exxon/Mobil, you’ll see something interesting: an editing transition known as a “wipe”, then Edwards talking about homeless veterans. This is the “proof” BOR is providing to his viewers that Edwards is linking the two.

To run from his earlier claims that there are no/not many homeless vets, BOR has been saying that he’s REALLY attacking Edwards’ dishonest “demagogueing” of the link between the economy/corporate profits and homeless vets. However, I have never seen nor heard of a clip or quote where Edwards does this. To my knowledge, BOR has never shown a clip or quoted any publication where Edwards has linked homeless vets and the economy/corporations. If Edwards was constantly “demagogueing” this point as much as BOR claims he was, I’m sure such a clip or quote would exist. If BOR had either of these, I’m sure he would show them endlessly. But he hasn’t. Instead, he has to rely on an edited clip to “prove” that Edwards linked them.

I know a thing or two about editing video, and BOR’s clip doesn’t fool me for a second.

O’Reilly’s “Big Announcement” to Homeless Vets: Maybe Someone Will Help You Someday

Last Thursday found me waiting in giddy anticipation for Bill O’Reilly’s “big announcement” about homeless veterans that he had been teasing for weeks. In a previous post, I had guessed that BOR would announce the creation of a charitable fund to help homeless vets or his support for legislation that would provide better services for homeless vets, especially those suffering from mental illness or addiction.

After all, BOR had magnanimously announced that he would help any homeless vet that was brought to his attention (after previously denying that homeless vets existed at all) and had loudly proclaimed that homelessness among vets is exclusively caused by addiction and mental illness (though those are really symptoms of a system that is doing a poor job of helping soldiers re-integrate back into society). As I said, I’ve gotten pretty good at guessing what BOR will do next — the only times I get it wrong is when I optimistically think that BOR will display some sort of decency, humility, or honesty. I guess that’s what I did, since, sadly, I was mostly wrong on this one.

BOR’s “big announcement” to help homeless veterans? BOR will “monitor” the creation of a new GI bill (which is yet to be drafted) to see if the federal government will someday help homeless vets by expanding every benefit offered to every vet and their families. That is, if this non-existent GI bill passes, which may take years and will constitute a complete overhaul of the GI bill — if it happens at all. BOR promised to have Peter King (R-NY) and/or John Kerry (D-MA) on his show once a month to check the progress and said he would harass any congressmen who objected to this new GI bill. Which does not yet exist.

That’s it. That was the “big announcement”. The word “homeless” was not mentioned once.

Meet the “Non-Existent” Vets: Ryan Sussman

Ryan was the first vet I interviewed that day at U.S. Vets. As I talked to him, I simply couldn’t believe that Ryan was just 21. It’s not that he didn’t look young, but the way he talked and what he was talking about reflected the experiences of someone much older.

By the age of 18, Ryan was fending for himself and figuring out what to do with his life while I was enjoying the training wheels/daycare we know as college. During his two and a half years in the Navy, Ryan was grappling with the forces of life and death. When he got out, Ryan was forced to experience the warped priorities of our government and face a country that claims to revere soldiers while leaving them out in the cold. At 21, I was coasting through my senior year of college, trying not to think about the future. At 21, Ryan had done what he was supposed to, but had no idea what the future held. At 21, Ryan was homeless, and the country he served didn’t give a damn.

Our petition delivery to your offices and the resulting press it got (including #3 on Countdown that night) obviously got under your skin. Otherwise you wouldn't have had the story about it lead your show last Friday night. So we're back near the top of your enemies list, hopefully nestled in among George Soros, Media Matters, Twista, and falafel jokes.

So I'm assuming your interns will read this and summarize it for you, since I know you're not so fond of the internets. I know how much it scares you. I know how you don't like how it's been used to expose you as the fraud you are, so you try to convince your elderly audience that the internet is simply a den of liberal lies, pedophiles and porn. I know how much you must hate your audience to lie to them the way you do.

That's the thing. I know a lot about you.

Like when I heard how your stalkerazzi "producer" Jesse Watters was badgering the vets at the petition delivery, asking them if they'd seen the clips of you saying that homeless veterans don't exist or if they were equally mad at Mark Cuban. When I heard that, I knew exactly what you would do. I even bet my friend dinner on it.

It's the same thing you did when Chris Dodd was on your show. He brought up the fact that you said that San Francisco deserves to be bombed by terrorists. Instead of acknowledging that you had indeed said that, you challenged him to tell you when and where he said it. When Dodd got the when right but not the where (your radio show, not your TV show), you lunged, saying that Dodd was wrong and didn't know what he was talking about. The important thing is YOU SAID SAN FRANCISCO SHOULD BE BOMBED BY TERRORISTS. The rest was a misdirect to convince the viewers you lie to so frequently.

We have been extremely fortunate to have award-winning documentary filmmaker Dan Lohaus working with us on our homeless vets campaign. Dan directed an amazing documentary called When I Came Home, which follows the story of Herold Noel, an Iraq veteran who returns home only to find himself homeless and living out of his car, struggling to receive the aid he is entitled to while trying to be a responsible father to his infant son.

In addition to rave reviews from Variety and New York Magazine, When I Came Home also earned the New York Loves Film Documentary Award at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. Just watch the preview and you'll get an idea why this movie has earned so much praise.

I plan to write my own review of the film in the near future, but if you want to learn more about When I Came Home, visit the website at whenicamehome.com. The website is a terrific resource, including information to help you locate organizations that help homeless vets, as well as contact information for members of the Senate and House Committees on Veteran Affairs. If you think veterans deserve better treatment in this country, demand it.

Gawker Studies O’Reilly’s Comments on Veterans

Gawker was good enough to feature our story about the homeless vet petition delivery to the FOX building last week, as well as Bill O’Reilly’s flailing response, where he tried to make his viewers forget the many idiotic, dishonest, hurtful things he’s been saying about homeless vets by attacking Robert Greenwald, Xanadu, gossip stringers, and the fact that homeless vets don’t watch enough cable.

Meet the “Non-Existent” Vets: Fletcher C. Hicklen

Bill O’Reilly says he can’t find any homeless veterans. After a few hours of calling, I was able to find several hundred. One of them was Fletcher C. Hicklen.

To make FOX ATTACKS! “Non-Existent” Veterans, I had arranged to interview three veterans at U.S. Vets — an organization that provides treatment, transitional housing, and classes to homeless vets — but Fletcher wasn’t one of them. After shooting the interviews, my cameraman, Phil, and I walked around US Vets looking for a few vets who wanted to send a quick message to Bill O’Reilly. I met Fletcher in US Vets’ computer lab, where vets can learn how to use computers and have internet access.

Like most of the vets I met that day, Fletcher had a lot to say. He told me about how proud he was to serve. He told me what an honor it had been to shake the hand of George HW Bush when he came to Honduras aboard Air Force One to thank the troops stationed there. He also told me that vets get a “raw deal” in America and are not given the respect they deserve.

Fletcher also told me that he had spent many a night sleeping under a bridge when he was homeless in Michigan. He slept under a bridge where three men had frozen to death just a few weeks before. Fletcher told me he often went to sleep praying the same thing wouldn’t happen to him.

Bill never served in the military, and he makes more than $9 million a year. It is unsurprising that he's out of touch with the plight of the 200,000 homeless veterans living in America. So we found them, we videotaped them, and we brought a few to O'Reilly's doorstep in NYC.

Then he refused to even let them in the building, and proceeded to mock them on national television... for not watching FOX News!

Homeless people frequently don't have cable, Bill. Something you might learn if you talked to them.

I put on my brown military thermals, my chocolate chip cammies, my black bandana and my black boots. I was off to represent for my father, my uncle, their army buddies and all the people in my life that I knew and didn't know who had served this country and in some way, often the same way, got the shaft from it. Most of them are Black, like me. My home state, Texas, is practically one huge military base. It's my patriotic duty, as the daughter of a Vietnam War combat medic, to pick up my weapon and fight for the cause. I grabbed my gear and went into friendly warrior mode to help these vets broadcast their story. And believe me -- their stories are AMAZING.

Countdown Features Homeless Vets Petition Delivery — And O’Reilly’s “Non-Existent” Apology

When the folks at MSNBC saw the improvised press event that started outside the FOX building yesterday when a group of homeless vets attempted to deliver our 17,000-signature petition to Bill O’Reilly, they sent over a camera crew and reporter to see what all the fuss was about. Little did we know that our story would be #3 on last night’s Countdown! Keith Olbermann does a great job of summarizing the (de)evolution of BOR’s lies and his increasingly irrational and erroneous flails as BOR tries in vain to blame everyone but himself for all the dumb things he’s been telling his audience about homeless veterans.

Just apologize, BOR. Apologize to the vets, John Edwards, and your viewers. Lying more and calling homeless vets mentally ill addicts isn’t going to make this go away. It’ll just make it worse for you and the homeless vets you continue to slander.

If you were around the FOX building in New York City today, you might’ve noticed that an impromptu press conference had broken out right in front. That’s because a group of veterans tried to deliver our 17,000-strong petition to Bill O’Reilly demanding an apology to homeless vets, and FOX wouldn’t let them in the door.

Two weeks ago, after hearing BOR’s second denial of the existence and significance of America’s 200,000 homeless vets, I took a trip to U.S. Vets in Inglewood, CA to see if I could find any of the homeless vets that BOR claimed he couldn’t find. I found them and talked to them. That night, BNF launched a video, FOX ATTACKS! “Non-Existent” Veterans, along with an open letter demanding that O’Reilly apologize for his factually-challenged statements. To date, over 96,000 people have seen the video and over 17,000 signed the letter.

So today at 3pm ET, five vets, Carol (executive director of the Fitzgerald House, an organization that provides transitional housing for homeless veterans), documentary filmmaker Dan Lohaus, and field producer Robin went to the FOX building to deliver the petition, along with a reporter from the Daily News and a local TV crew. But it wasn’t so easy.

O'Reilly, who regularly defamed Edwards as a phony, has a lot to answer for. In attacks on the former North Carolina Senator, O'Reilly has repeatedly belittled his compassion, issued inflammatory statements and mocking attacks, and denied both the "existence and significance" of homeless veterans. As recently as January 16, O'Reilly took to the airwaves to rain ridicule upon Edwards, saying, "Well, we're still looking for all the veterans sleeping under the bridges,...so if you find anybody, let us know." As we reported two days later, Robert Greenwald and his crew at Brave New Films did exactly that.

They plan on visiting the Fox News Channel Studios today at 3:00 pm, and will come carrying a petition signed by 17,000 people demanding an apology from O'Reilly for his ignorance and abuse. In a press release, Brave New Films and Fitzgerald House say thay "have found that it is very easy to locate homeless veterans and are willing to help O'Reilly find them if his desire to help homeless vets is sincere." Of course, the last time we checked in on O'Reilly, he was in New Hampshire, bullying Obama aides, and snarling about how "nobody blocks a [camera] shot" on the "Factor." Well, we'll see about that.

Yes we will. I guess the fighting doesn't necessarily stop when you come home. My bet is on the vets... to win.

Bill O'Reilly: Poor People Aren't Poor Enough

Bill O'Reilly is so smart. He wants to teach John Edwards about poverty by telling him (and us) that poor people aren't really poor:

If you earn less than $10,000, you are poor. If a family of four earns less than $21,000, they are poor. Yet according to the government census, poor households in America have lots of stuff.

Ninety-seven percent have a color TV, 78 percent a DVD player, 80 percent an air conditioner, 73 percent a car or truck, 63 percent cable or satellite TV, and 43 percent of poor households in the USA own the home they are living in.

So if the poor are not destitute in America, and they obviously are not, why are so many veterans sleeping under bridges, John Edwards? The answer again is they're mostly addicted or mentally ill. It has nothing to do with the economy.

I'm sure that in BOR's mind, poor people should be filthy and dressed in tattered, stinking rags, screaming at invisible voices and pushing shopping carts filled with their worldly possessions. Kind of like how some trolls claimed that the homeless veterans in FOX ATTACKS! "Non-Existent" Veterans were too respectably groomed and dressed to be homeless, even having the audacity to have cell phones with earpieces.

BOR has no concept of the WORKING POOR. What a struggle it would be to provide food and a roof for a family of four when your household makes less than $21,000 a year. That people can work full time jobs (sometimes more than one) and still be poor. That people can have things but barely be making it.

To those who say that these vets are not homeless, I have a question: HOW HOMELESS DO YOU WANT THEM TO BE?

Should these men be wearing dirty clothes that stink of urine? Should their faces be grimy, their hair greasy and knotted? Should these vets be mumbling gibberish to invisible voices? Should all of their possessions fit in a shopping cart? Should they be living in tents or, perhaps, under bridges? Then will they be “homeless” enough for you?

Do these veterans have too much self-respect for you? Really, how the fuck do you want them to dress? How bad should their personal hygiene be until they satisfy your definition of "homeless"?

These vets are trying to get work, make a living, get some education, and have their own place to live, just like you and me. Several of the vets I spoke to were coming from or going to work. They need to dress well and look presentable, just like you do when you’re at work or school or trying to find a job. Then, when they get back to their room at US Vets at the end of the day, they get changed into more comfortable clothes, just like I and, perhaps, you do. Places like the Salvation Army and Goodwill sell very affordable business clothes, including suits and ties. In fact, you probably walk by homeless people every day without knowing it. You might even work with or have hired a homeless person — many homeless people have jobs but still can’t afford a place to live. The vast majority of homeless people don’t want people to know that they are homeless — being homeless against your will is nothing to be proud of.

To Bill O'Reilly: Homeless veterans exist. I met some.

In a previous post, I wrote about Bill O’Reilly’s bizarre assertion that there are no homeless veterans in America. He made this claim on January 4, 2008 while talking about a speech by John Edwards where Edwards said that 200,000 vets are homeless on any given night in America. BOR continued to deny the existence of homeless veterans on January 16, 2008 during an interview with radio host Ed Schultz. This time, he added a caveat that if there are homeless veterans, “there aren’t many of them out there”. You can see both clips for yourself and read transcripts here, since I’m sure you’ll soon be hearing BOR complain, as he always does when he’s criticized for something he said, that he has been “taken out of context.” The context of these unedited clips is quite clear.

On both occasions, BOR was either ignorant to or consciously ignoring a recent study from the National Alliance to End Homelessness (using data from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Census Bureau) that found:

In 2006, approximately 195,827 veterans were homeless on a given night — an increase of 0.8 percent from 194,254 in 2005. More veterans experience homelessness over the course of the year. We estimate that 336,627 were homeless in 2006.

Either that or BOR believes that 195,827 homeless veterans (and that number is surely low) is a small enough number of homeless veterans as to be insignificant. I have no idea what number of homeless veterans BOR considers to be “many” — 195,827 homeless veterans certainly seems like a lot to me.

BOR said that he couldn’t find any homeless veterans. Maybe he wasn’t looking in the right places. It took me less than a day to find several hundred.

Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America:

O'Reilly: "They (homeless veterans) may be out there, but there's not many of them out there. Okay?...If you know where there is a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it."
