Sen. Barack Obama has long been accused of being an elitist--after all, he prefers arugula to lettuce--but when Politco.com asked Sen. John McCain how many homes he owned, he couldn't come up with the answer. The reporter was instructed to check with his staff. For several hours after that, the answer floating around was four. That wasn't quite right. The real answer is seven, although Politico.com is now reporting there are eight, including a Phoenix condo the McCains bought for their daughter, Meghan.

The Washington Post conducted its own house tour and discovered that McCain has indoor AND outdoor swimming pools, spas, state-of-the-art fitness centers and breathtaking views of the Arizona mountains, Pacific Ocean and downtown Phoenix. And, of course, he wants to make the number eight by adding the digs at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to his list.

The seven McCain properties, all of which are owned by his wife, Cindy, include:
1. Hidden Valley, Arizona: A 15-acre ranch near Sedona that is valued at more than $1 million. This is where the senator likes to relax and fire up the grill.
2. Phoenix, Arizona: A 7,000 square foot condo in a 12-story glass building in downtown that bills itself as "the Valley of the Sun's finest example of urban residential living."
3. Phoenix, Arizona: A second condo on a lower floor in the same 12-story glass building.
4. La Jolla, California: A beachfront condo.
5. Coronado, California: Another beachfront condo.
6. Coronado, California: Yet another beachfront condo in the same building as the first. Is this one for the kids?
7. Arlington, Virginia: A three-bedroom apartment with "climate controlled access to Metro." The building has indoor and outdoor pools. The senator lives here most of the year.

Harlem, NY -- The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is evicting up to 10 commercial tenants, collectively named the Fredrick Samuel Merchant Association, located in Harlem. NYCHA leases commercial store space for retail and professional uses, with market competitive rents, negotiable terms and attractive incentives for substantial renovations. This comes on the heel of a claimed deficit of $198bn, rampant corruption and drastic cuts for senior and youth community programs. These evictions are in stark contrast to serving entrepreneurial initiative it boasts on the agency's website. The establishments are forced to close without sound reasoning from NYCHA. The tactic is the all too familiar, exponentially raise the rents to ensure you won't be operational.
Three establishments shared their stories: Fred's Hardware and Beauty Store, Danny and Mel's Barbershop, and Elite Boutique.

Two percent of adult black Americans are infected with the virus, and only four countries outside Africa have a higher HIV prevalence. [includes rush transcript]

http://www.americanprogressaction.org/events/2008/07/fiscal.html

The legacy of conservative governance combined with a faltering economy has left our country and many of our states facing a fundamental budget challenge: how to restore fiscal responsibility while making needed investments in infrastructure, energy, health care, education, housing, and elsewhere.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has been a leader in demonstrating progressive fiscal responsibility and will discuss his efforts to close an inherited $1.7 billion structural deficit, while making critical investments to protect and invest in Maryland's priorities.

Governor O'Malley states, "In Maryland, we have tried to practice a different kind of politics--the 'politics of posterity'--to make decisions--sometimes very hard decisions--based on our shared values, and our desire to choose a better future for ourselves, our children, and our posterity."

On July 24th during FBN's "America's Nightly Scoreboard," gushing peppy preppy host David Asman met his match in California Democrat Maxine Waters, who argued in favor of the housing bill that will be voted on in a rare Saturday Senate session.

The FOX Business approach is that the government should simply let giant mortgages houses Fannie Mae [the Federal National Mortgage Association or FNMA] and Freddie Mac [the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation or FHMC] fail or go into receivership.

The Congress has decided that these two institutions are too big to be allowed to fail.

For days FBN has been telling viewers that only 21% of Americans approve this bill. However, after an hour searching ong Google, I can't find any poll numbers to back up their claims.

As the country and the world reel from crises ranging from skyrocketing oil prices and global food shortages to housing and climate change, how best to understand the government policies being pushed through? We spend the hour with Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Klein also discusses Barack Obama's economic advisory team, whom she calls "Obama's Chicago Boys"; why she's suing the US government for spying on journalists like her; as well as her recent trip to China, where she says the government is building a high-tech police state with the help of US military contractors.
The worst of the economic crisis may be far from over. That was the message of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke Tuesday. He indicated that the housing and financial turmoil will persist deep into next year. The Senate, meanwhile, is deliberating a bill this week that would provide government-backed loans to 400,000 homeowners on the brink of foreclosure.
John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Denver, CO 05/02/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: ". . . Americans are hurting today. The latest jobs report, although not maybe as bad as some had predicted is still bad. Unemployment continues up. Americans are suddenly and recently losing their jobs. Many of them are worrying about how they're gonna keep their home, how they're gonna afford health care, how they're gonna keep their insurance and Americans are going through tough times now, my friends. I don't think we can sugar-coat it. I think these are enormous challenges and they affect every level of American society and especially those working men and women, many of whom are holding two jobs and trying to educate their children and keep their home. This morning and this evening, families will be sitting around the kitchen table, trying to figure out how they can afford their new home loan mortgage payments and they are also trying to figure out how to keep their health care, help to keep their insurance and keep their job. So these are tough times in America and I have a plan of action to fix our economy, to make sure that Americans remain in their home and also to realize the American dream to be able to educate their children and hand off to the next generation of Americans a better American than the one that we inherited. That's been the legacy of every generation of Americans."

Town Hall
New Orleans, LA 04/24/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "In terms of the 3-year rebuilding process that the next president will actually be a part of, what do you see happening in terms of the first 100 days of your presidency."

MCCAIN: "I see the majority of our information and knowledge and recommendations coming from the local, the state government. I am pleased now with the level of cooperation between the state government and the local government here in New Orleans, we know that was a problem in the past. These are the lessons learned...

"I would implement their recommendations as to how we need to move forward, and some of those recommendations are already there. One of the areas that I think needs to be attacked first at the federal government level is affordable housing."

Rising education, housing, and health-care costs have made it virtually impossible for all but the corporate elite to enjoy what were once considered middle-class comforts. Thousands are afflicted with a wrenching choice: take up residence on America's financial and social margins or sell out. And it's not just impoverished teachers and social workers, struggling to pay their rent, who are hurt. From the activist who works to give others a living wage but isn't paid one himself, to the universal health-care advocate who becomes a management consultant for Big Pharma, The Trap presents a damning indictment of the economic and political landscape that traps young Americans. It examines the struggles between passions and paychecks.
