A one day Conference Against International Terrorism takes place. The conference begins with two minutes silence in memory of all victims of terror whether it be perpetrated by Al Qaeda or Western-sponsored state terrorism. The conference takes place on the thirty second anniversary of the 1973 CIA-backed military coup in Chile and the fourth anniversary of the 9-11 attack on Wall Street and the Pentagon.</p> <p>Mark Curtis is a former Research Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and was until recently Director of the World Development Movement. He has worked in the field of international development for the past 12 years, including as Head of Policy at the non-governmental organisations, Christian Aid and ActionAid. Curtis is the author of several important books about the hyprocrisy and deceit of the British Establishment. These include Unpeople: Britain's Secret Human Rights Abuses and Web of Deceit: Britain's Real Role in the World. His speech further exposes the hypocrisy of Western governments over the issue of terrorism and presents a potted history of assassinations of progressive Third World leaders carried out by British agents. She will talk about her projects, as a filmmaker and writer, to address human rights and child abuse issues, such as her latest documentary, "Tapestries of Hope." </p> <p>In the making of "Tapestries," Michealene travels to Zimbabwe to document Betty Makoni and the Girl Child Network, and to expose an issue that continues to be ignored: the rape and sexual abuse of thousands of young girls in Zimbabwe. The cause of these rapes is shocking: men with HIV and AIDS are counseled by local traditional healers that if they have sex with a virgin, their blood will be purified and they will be cured of the disease. The rape and abuse is out of control with little to no legal or societal consequence. He broke the code of confidentiality among legal interpreters to describe the workers' predicament in what he calls "the saddest procession I have ever witnessed." He says most of the workers were peasants from Guatemala and did not fully understand the criminal charges they were facing. He also says that court-appointed lawyers had little time to meet with the workers, many of whom ended up waiving their rights.
