Social psychologist discusses what an individual's workspace can reveal about their personality.

-----

Does what's on your desk reveal what's on your mind? Do those pictures on your walls tell true tales about your character? Is your favorite outfit about to give you away?

For the last 10 years psychologist Gosling has been studying how people project (and protect) their inner selves. By exploring our private worlds (desks, bedrooms, even our clothes and cars), he shows not only how we showcase our personalities in unexpected ways, but also how we create personality in the first place, communicate it others and interpret the world around us - The Commonwealth Club of California

Sam Gosling, Ph.D., is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been widely covered in the media, including The New York Times, Psychology Today, NPR, and "Good Morning America," and his research is featured in Malcolm Gladwell's Blink. Gosling is the recipient of the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution. He lives in Austin, Texas.

I do understand that there are many people who are feminists in all but name - and that in critical circles it is a debated term of identity...that said...I am still befuddled...

---
Abigail Adams: If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.

Anna Quindlen: It's important to remember that feminism is no longer a group of organizations or leaders. It's the expectations that parents have for their daughters, and their sons, too. It's the way we talk about and treat one another. It's who makes the money and who makes the compromises and who makes the dinner. It's a state of mind. It's the way we live now.

Maureen Reagan: I will feel equality has arrived when we can elect to office women who are as incompetent as some of the men who are already there.

Rebecca West: I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat, or a prostitute.1913

http://www.americanprogress.org/pressroom/releases/2008/06/ID_Divide_Release.html

This spring, 12 nuns were turned away from voting booths during the Indiana presidential primary because they lacked state identification (none of them drove). This was a stark reminder that the recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld Indiana's voter ID law poses lasting consequences for our democracy.

This issue of voter identification is just one of the identification issues addressed in a major new report by Cassandra Butts and Peter Swire: "The ID Divide: Addressing Problems of Identification and Authentication in American Society." Much like the "digital divide," the ID Divide is an easily overlooked but vital reality that affects many in our country. Over 20 million adult citizens lack government-issued photo ID, while victims of identity theft and those put on watch lists also fall on the wrong side of the divide. Badly-designed new ID programs, furthermore, may well impose large costs on ordinary citizens, including raising the risk of identity theft.

The report stems from the Progressive Identity Project, which included experts in the many areas affected by identification issues: national and homeland security, immigration, voting rights, electronic health records, computer security, and privacy and civil liberties. The report proposes six new Progressive Principles for Identification, and sets forth a comprehensive approach for how the next administration should address issues of identification and authentication.

Featured Panelists:
Jim Harper, Director of Information Policy Studies, Cato Institute
Bruce Schneier, Founder and Chief Technology Officer, BT Counterpane
Peter P. Swire, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress; C. William O'Neill Professor at the Moritz College of Law of the Ohio State University
Tova A. Wang, Vice President for Research, Common Cause

Cassandra Q. Butts, Senior Vice President for Domestic Policy, Center for American Progress

My parents stared at me hard when I broke the news to them: I wanted to study Political Science, instead of following the cultural norm of obtaining a BS in a computer-related field. They were unable to understand why I would give up the financial security and familiarity of computers to vie for a place in an insecure field. I shrugged and stated that I found it fascinating, unable to articulate my thoughts properly at the time.

Looking back, I realize that my overwhelming sense of otherness as a racial, gender, religious and un-naturalized minority led me to seek out an education that would ‘tolerate’ and ‘accept’ me. Politics is the site for the regimentation of Otherness. While it may not create difference, our politics of difference—border politics, immigration politics, racial politics and all kinds of identity politics—certainly sustain boundaries. I wrestled with the notion of a society that dehumanizes, marginalizes and forces me to live in the shadows while normatively dictating my most intimate relationships. I realized then that the existence of our multiple sites of enclaves hinged on the alienation of the individual and society. I was not about to live in a shell, protected and entitled to benefits given to particular social groups. I could not allow the underground life I led to render me voiceless and powerless; I had to take control of my destiny and help pave the way for change.

Thus, I am here blogging away. Sharing my thoughts and experiences with those reading these pieces is only a tiny step and a small part of the many ways I actively work to make a difference. Staring at numbers flitting across the screen in a tiny cubicle would probably secure my future, but living the stereotype would only add to the many boundaries between us. And I want to build bridges.

Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Shelby Steele explains "racial masking," a phenomenon he identifies as a common experience for minorities in American culture.

-----

A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win

Shelby Steele examines the challenges that Barack Obama must overcome in his bid to become President of the United States in A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win. Having to cater to both black voters and white voters in what binds Obama, and his dilemma is that he achieved visibility more as a racial icon than as an individual. In his analysis, Shelby Steele discusses his own mixed race background, and he empathizes with Obama's inner conflicts even as he critiques him. He also identifies the two 'masks' that blacks wear in order to seek success and power in the American mainstream: bargaining and challenging, and he argues that Obama is too constrained by divisive racial politics to find his own true political voice - and proposes a way for him to break those bonds and find his own voice.

Shelby Steele is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and the author of The Content of Our Character and White Guilt, and a contributing editor at Harper's; his work has also appeared in numerous other magazines and newspapers - Cody's Books

Shelby Steele is the Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He specializes in the study of race relations, multiculturalism, and affirmative action. He was appointed a Hoover fellow in 1994.

Steele has written widely on race in American society and the consequences of contemporary social programs on race relations

In 2006, Steele received the Bradley Prize for his contributions to the study of race in America. In 2004, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal. Steele is the author of White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era and most recently A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win.
