McCain vs. McCain on the DREAM ACT

When John McCain spoke at the National Council of La Raza on Monday, a woman from One Dream 2009 asked whether he would support the DREAM Act, which would give undocumented high-school students the chance to achieve a higher education. McCain answered, "Yes, yes."

Now, that would be good news except, as Matt Ortega tells us, it completely contradicts what McCain told a bunch of right-wing bloggers back in 2007.

Here's a quote from the National Review's Jim Geraghty about McCain's true stance on the DREAM Act: "I would have voted against it I have said a thousand times, I have heard the message from the American people. They want the border secured first."

Despite clarification, NC bars undocumented students!

The debate over college admissions for undocumented students continues in North Carolina even after clarification from the U.S. Customs and Enforcement that federal law did not prohibit undocumented immigrants from seeking higher education.

And yet, today the North Carolina Community College system has decided to bar illegal immigrant students until further clarification:

"Until we receive further clarification, we will no longer admit individuals classified as illegal or undocumented immigrants into curriculum degree programs."

What further clarification is needed?

Are Americans losing jobs to foreign workers?

The House Committee on Education and Labor held hearings this past Tuesday to investigate whether existing federal programs like H-2A, H-2B ensure that American workers are recruited before employers hire from abroad.

Of particular concern to us was the testimony of Bill Beardall, Director for the Equal Justice Center in Austin, Texas. His major premise was that due to the failure of our government in enforcing wage laws for ALL workers, employers took advantage and exploited undocumented workers, causing a downward spiral of wages, working conditions and job opportunities for American citizens. The best way to ensure labor protections and job opportunities for U.S. workers was to ensure that wage laws and labor protections are fully enforced for all workers regardless of immigration status. Instead of scapegoating undocumented immigrants, Beardall lays emphasis on the need for equal protection of the law in order to find a solution to scrupulous employers benefitting from cheap labor sources.

According to this scenario, the undocumented worker is not to 'blame' for Americans working for less wages and losing their jobs; rather it is the federal government along with scrupulous employers that are at fault. If all workers were treated equally in wages, working conditions and labor protections, we would not see a downward spiral of wages, and hiring an undocumented worker over an American citizen would not be enticing anymore. Consequently, this would also discourage 'illegal immigration' since the concept of 'cheap labor' for hire would not exist.

This take on policymaking makes more sense than raiding workplaces and locking up undocumented workers in our jails. What do you think about Bill Beardall's testimony?

Prince William County in Virginia is officially wounding itself due to its crackdown on "illegal immigration."

On July 10, 2007, Prince William County unanimously adopted a resolution to deny services to illegal or undocumented immigrants and enable immigration enforcement by local law enforcement. The "logic" behind the resolution was that illegal immigration was causing "economic hardship and lawlessness" in the County. Less than a year later, it is obvious that the resolution has backfired.

Sanctuary City - Kudos to San Francisco

Mayor Newsom is facing a lot of heat for his most unpopular decision yet—an $83,000 campaign to advertise San Francisco as a sanctuary city for "illegal" or undocumented immigrants. The purpose of the campaign is to make undocumented immigrants feel safe and secure, encourage them to report crimes, use health services, and send their children to school. It also comes as a symbolic stance against the many nationwide anti-immigrant measures and the rising popularity of immigrant scapegoating.

Some taxpayers are livid--why should their tax dollars be used to promote services for "illegal immigrants" when the city is undergoing fiscal crisis? It is a good point, and yet the undocumented immigrant population of San Francisco probably pays more than $84,000 in sales and property taxes to the city.

To begin with, college education is depicted as a piece of pie, accessible only to some. Then, the "illegal immigrant" student is painted as stealing or having unfair access to the small piece of pie either by taking a seat from an American citizen or instate-tuition to attend college. Obviously, this angers the working class students who feel like they have to face unfair competition and have less access to student loans and resources.

Stop saying "Illegal Immigrants Don't Pay Taxes!"

...Undocumented workers are filing more taxes than ever before says the Internal Revenue Service.

We are not talking about regressive sales taxes. We aren't even speaking about how undocumented workers use fake SSNs and pay more than $7 billion into Social Security annually, thus keeping it afloat. Here, we are documenting how, along with American citizens each April, our 'illegal immigrant' parents file taxes with the IRS by using Taxpayer Identification Numbers.

The IRS began issuing these ITINs in 1996 to foreigners who did not qualify for Social Security numbers but earned income legally in the United States. Since then, more than 10 million of these numbers have been issued and although precise numbers aren't available, most ITINs used to file taxes belong to 'illegal immigrants,' according to a 2004 report by the Government Accountability Office. And the number of ITINs issued increases each year as do the tax returns filed using those ITINs.

The mainstream media hardly advertises this fact and the anti-immigration lobby plays like a broken record over and over that '"illegals are costing American taxpayers..." and "illegals do not pay taxes." When Congress was debating an economic stimulus package earlier in the year, Tom Tancredo was booming on about how the package would give rebates to 'resident aliens.' What he and the mainstream media failed to mention was that the rebates would be given since these 'resident aliens' were filing taxes using their own ITINs. We understand that it is hard to be so stoicly against those damned 'illegals' when there are stories about them following the law, filing their taxes and contributing to America but face the facts.

Sheriff Joe's Easter weekend of racial profiling in Phoenix

It's a little after four in the afternoon, and I’m standing in the blazing heat, in a parking lot at the Northwest corner of 32nd Street and Thomas in Phoenix. Most of the parking lot is roped off with yellow police tape, a dramatic move by perhaps the most dramatic sheriff in American history. Inside the taped area are deputies. Lots of deputies. Lots of sunglasses. And big, big trucks housing mobile jail cells. Lots of TV news crews. Lots of hatred. Ah, Arizona, how do I love thee? Let me count the deputays.

I am here as an editor, as a reporter, and as a citizen observer. But I don’t go inside the roped off area with most of the other reporters. They’re here from all the TV stations, from the newspapers. Sheriff Joe Arpaio farts in Phoenix, and many in the corporate media here come running to celebrate it against a backdrop of American flags and tough-guy scowling. There has never been a more lauded scoundrel than this, I think. Question is: Will they celebrate this day as well? After all, Arpaio is here today, on Good Friday, to tell the people of Maricopa County that he has begun another weekend of “patrols” in predominantly Latino neighborhoods. For Easter Weekend. The last time he did this, it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Nice timing, from a man who bragged on CNN that he found being compared to the KKK to be a compliment. Ah, Arizona.

In Arpaio-speak, this "patrol" thing means claiming that crime is up in the neighborhood, when, in fact, it is down. It means claiming that people in the neighborhood have called his offices to ask for more patrols, when in fact no one I talked to in the neighborhood has anything but fear and loathing for the sheriff. It means arresting people for minor offenses, such as a cracked windshield or mild speeding, offenses that in Scottsdale or Cave Creek would get the offender a ticket at the most.

It is Good Friday, and Sheriff Joe has decided this is the perfect time to terrorize Latinos for a weekend. Easter weekend. He has hundreds of deputies all over the neighborhood, along with armed members of a volunteer “posse”. I see one such volunteer stride past, in a shirt that reads “GOD’S ARMY,” his pistol in full view. He is tall and stiff as an SS soldier, a stick lodged somewhere quiet high up his rectum. He sneers at me and all the people who stand with me, most of us brown, almost all of us Latino. Because I am a wiseass, I cannot resist.
