Immigration arrests from worksite raids have increased tenfold in the last five years. As politicians on both sides of the aisle grapple with the issue, families are caught in the middle. ANP went to Annapolis, MD to see how people were coping in the aftermath of the state's largest immigration roundup in years.

John McCain
Speech
San Diego, CA 07/14/08

QUESTIONER: [...] First of all, my father's a Korean war veteran and he and I both would like to thank you for your service; all of your service. We also want to be clear about the choice that we're making. You say you are for comprehensive reform. You have also said that you want enforcement first.

We are wondering, is this comprehensive reform include the 12 million undocumented immigrants and will it be in one bill and will you do what Senator Obama has said he will do is make this [...] a top priority in his first year as president.

JOHN MCCAIN: [...] First of all, as I said in my remarks and I'll try to make my answer brief, although it's a very important question, especially for a lot of people in this room. If it wasn't my highest priority, I never would have, at great risk, including to achieve the nomination of my party, and risking alienating some parts of my own party, making it the highest priority, sitting down with Senator Ted Kennedy and doing what Americans want us to do and that's democrat and republican sitting down together and working out solutions and working on your behalf and not putting the party first and doing what I've always done is put my country first.

I'll say to you again, we had to take tough votes, we republicans and democrats who joined together. Senator Obama went out, at the request of the labor unions, and voted for amendments that would have killed the legislation and that's a fact, sir. That's a fact.

I took tough votes. Of course, it was my top priority and it will be my top priority. Otherwise I wouldn't have done what I did.

I think my actions speak for themselves. [...] My friends, why did we fail? Why did we fail twice—not once, but twice—weeks of debate before the United States senate and that's because many Americans remember that, in 1986, we passed a law that gave amnesty to a couple of million people and we said we would secure our borders and we didn't secure our borders. My friends, Secretary Chertoff will tell you that there's two-million people of the 12 million who are in this country who have committed crimes in this country and obviously we don't want those people in this country and I think we all understand that and appreciate it.

We had a plan that—and still do—and it's comprehensive, but we do need to have our borders secured, which we can do in fairly rapid fashion. So, if we're gonna pass the legislation, we have to give the American people the confidence that we're not only securing our borders because of the issue of illegal immigration, but, my friends you know what's happening with the drug traffic across our borders, which is killing young Americans. The drug cartels, sir are moving drugs across into the United States of America. By the way, I'm proud of President Calderon, who I recently met with.

I am very proud of the Merida Initiative, where we're gonna work together. The United States of America and Mexico and we're gonna stop these drug cartels and they're killing off Mexican police at great numbers, my friends and they're doing terrible things. I work with the Mexican government. I know them. We will stop it.

So you can have confidence it was my highest priority a couple years ago, for years, and it's my top priority today. It'll be a top priority tomorrow and I think I prove that in my actions and I hope you understand that and I will vote against amendments such as those presented by Senator Obama on the floor of the Senate and people in my own party on the floor of the senate that would have killed that legislation. I'll oppose those kinds of amendments [...]. [Pre-empting questioner's follow-up] Yes, yes, yes, yes.

QUESTIONER: One bill?!

MCCAIN: Yessir.

QUESTIONER: One single bill.

MCCAIN: Of course.

QUESTIONER: With both the—that legalizes and provides the pathway to citizenship for the undocumented—is that what you're saying? One single bill.

MCCAIN: One single comprehensive bill, but first we have to assure the American people that the borders are secure. We have to have that done and, my friends, if you don't want to do that, then I have to tell ya, to bring it up twice, we don't pass it. Then we don't pass the legislation. I mean, its not that any much more complicated than that and that's the reality, but I guarantee you Americans are ready for comprehensive immigration reform because they're sick and tired of the patchwork of laws.

Look—the great mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders is sitting right here and I'll tell ya, he runs into this problem every day and there's nothing he's told me he wants more than comprehensive immigration reform because he's happy to do things that the federal government should have been doing a long, long time ago. Am I right, mayor? Thank you, sir. Thank you and congratulations on your recent re-election.

JM CA 7-14 (JR#59) E -- ClipD

"..basically the legal system made us illegal..." - Sonia, senior at Loyola Academy.
Students at Loyola Academy have put together this three-part documentary in support of the DREAM Act legislation.

I was drawn to Sonia's story because it resembled mine in so many ways. She immigrated with her mother to the United States with a proper visa but as they waited for their paperwork under their aunt that has taken more than a decade to process, their legal status ran out rendering Sonia--who has practically grown up here--an 'illegal' American.

Most immigrants have little idea about the lengthy visa process before they came here--my parents certainly did not. They weren't playing with a full deck of cards as they are today--completely assimilated after a decade of living here and knowledgable about the American immigration system. And it is a bit hypocritical to claim that 'they should have known' before coming here when most American citizens probably cannot pass their own citizenship test, let alone know much about immigraton to the United States.

The battle of rights for people living in the country without status is not unique to the U.S.A. I find news regularly about deportations, detentions, and death from places as far apart as India, South Africa, and Ireland, and it doesn't stop there. This is a worldwide issue, which is why it's interesting to watch as other countries which have large undocumented populations deal with this problem by bringing them out of the shadows.

First up: Spain. In 2005, Spain granted amnesty to around 800,000 undocumented people living in Spain. This amnesty was much more generous than any of those proposed over here, allowing immigrants to apply even if they had only been in the country for a few months. Surprisingly, Spain has not collapsed, imploded, nor sunken into the sea.

Next: Israel. Birthright citizenship does not exist in Israel, but in 2006 over a hundred young people who were born there were granted residency, which also covered their parents.

I admit I find it easier to blame something or someone else when things go wrong. And I get upset, angry, frustrated that things did not go a certain way and sometimes I blame others for my misfortunes. However, I never blamed my parents for my hard life here and here's why.

As a Moderator at the Dream Act Portal, there have been many opponents who have told us, "You should blame your parents for what they've done to you, not us." And at first, I found this strange because I've never thought of blaming my parents at all. As I step back and look at the bigger picture of that statement, many opponents take out their frustrations on us. It makes sense. They feel that we are "blaming Americans" for not giving us the opportunity to become legalized. However, I do not blame anyone for my problems. And I think everyone who is against us should first step back for a moment and stop blaming us for their problems.

Often, the opponents blame that we are receiving free healthcare, welfare, education, etc. In other words, they feel that they aren't receiving these basic services. Americans in general aren't. Many complain about the lack of healthcare and overcrowded schools. But that is not our fault. It's not our fault that they are sick or that their children are unhappy in an overcrowded school.

The Kanas City Star reports on how opponents use immigrants as scapegoats. Devin Bughart feels the intense animosity towards immigrants:

Devin Burghart, the director of the Building Democracy Initiative at the Chicago-based Center for New Community, said many people who say they oppose only illegal immigration actually demonstrate a disdain for all immigrants.

“They start there (with illegal immigration), but the legislation they support goes far beyond that to restricting legal immigration as well, and they offer no solution to the current problem or to speeding up the visa process,” Burghart said.

The opposition claims that they are angry because there is a legal way for people to come to this country. However, the legal way isn't working--check out the huge visa backlogs! I believe that they harbor more than just indignation at immigrants who were not able to come the legal way. Scapegoating, anyone?

Check out the entire article here.

Opponents of universal healthcare are trying to derail reform by scapegoating immigrants. On Feb 12, 2008, immigrants and allies joined at a rally in front of the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC, to demand health for everyone in America.

The rally included stories from Americans affected by the lack of affordable, universal health care in our country. And they demanded that health care reform where everyone is in and no one is left out.

The video ends with a call to action to sign the pledge for a better America for immigrants and citizens alike:

www.BuildingAmericaTogether.org

Sign the pledge today!

I often feel jerked around, like I am not a human being but a pawn in a game of chess played by several actors.

Our parents brought us to this country without much planning for the future. Now I cannot blame them since they were also playing with whatever pieces they owned at the time. A plethora of anti-immigration groups like NumbersUSA spend their time scapegoating undocumented immigrants, instead of focusing on more persistant problems. Crafty politicians with their elaborate set of lobbyists in hand continue to give out campaign promises and rarely deliver on them. The most likely Republican candidate for Presidency, John McCain, has gone from co-sponsoring the Dream Act and bills on amnesty in recent years, to now calling for border security first, thus pandering to a more conservative group of voters. It evokes memories of the licenses for illegal aliens bill in California (SB1160) that became law before getting terminated since the Governor demanded more security precautions as amendments to the bill. That never happened.

Similarly, a more "secure" border is something that I do not see happening either and it is ridiculous to keep waiting for more comprehensive immigration reform before bringing up the Dream Act. It is a cheap trick, a wanton distraction and I am not into playing these games anymore or being played.

We are human beings, living with hopes and living in despair, wasting our potential while working hard at whatever we can find, dreaming about what our lives COULD be and WOULD be, grasping for some sort of control. We are not agents of our circurmstances, but we need to be active agents in changing those circurmstances. What are you doing and what will you do to ensure that the Dream Act passes or that we get a chance at a fair shot in life?

Learn. Educate. Resist. Refuse to be Played.

Dreamers or not, we are still migrants in search of better times.

I was talking to a friend today who also hopes for the DREAM Act. He asked me, "How do you find a sponsor?"

I told him that in our situation, we don't find sponsors. They just "happen." I applied to colleges in hopes that someone might become interested in my peculiar situation and offer me a hand. And it happened. My high school counselor talked to the person in charge of the scholarship program and said that my status would not be a problem, as long as I proved to them that I merited admission.

But now, I find myself in a similar situation. I am about to graduate from college soon and I would like to either work as a teacher in high school or go on to graduate school.

I began to ask my friends who know about me, "If you were in my situation, what would you do after graduation?" I did this because I am running low on ideas, since I can't even work at a bookstore just to save money for graduate school. Apart from joining the millions of migrants who work under the table, there are no other choices.

Of course, there is always the choice to return home, but I don't want to start a new life and never see the people I care about in more than 10 years.

We still are here and our hopes, despite the setbacks we have faced, are still keeping us alive and motivated. My friend asks, "Once Obama becomes president, DREAM will happen right away, right?"

Maybe. Even if then, we still have a long way to go. The better thing to focus on now is to find our voices and inform people about us.

But in the meantime, what else should we do after graduation?

While anti-migrant politicians are encouraging policies that actively infringe upon the human rights of migrants, they are accepting donations from the companies that draw them here. During the 2005-2006 election cycle, Bank of America donated $102,250 to members of the House Immigration Reform Caucus.
