<p>Deadly clashes between protesters and police in Indian-administered Kashmir have continued for a fourth straight day. </p>
<p>One person died and three others were wounded on Thursday when police opened fire on Muslims demonstrating in Srinagar.</p>
<p>A curfew has been imposed in Srinagar, however community leaders are urging people to ignore it.</p>
<p>Weeks of anger over disputed land near a Hindu shrine, turned to violence earlier this week and has left at least 34 people dead. </p>
<p>Al Jazeera's Tod Baer, reports from Srinagar.</p>

<br />QUESTIONER: Well, I just had a question about the mass transit in this country like high-speed rail, electric, this kind of stuff that families could use to commute east and west, north and south and do it cheaply.</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] I think what you're doing here [at GE] is a natural extension of what you're going to see as an explosion of mass transit in America. Yeah. I can't tell you that I think the price of a barrel of oil is gonna come down dramatically.</p>
<p>"I'm happy to see, as you are, that it's come down some recently, but, to somehow think that the price of a barrel of oil is gonna be very inexpensive again, ignores the reality of two major economies (China and India) that are also competing for a finite resource. I mean, it's just a fundamental of economics and so I think that mass transit is gonna be a very, very big factor. A lot of the cities are doing it.</p>
<p>"My own hometown of Phoenix, Arizona—we are involved in mass transit and I'd also like to mention one other aspect of it. It seems, to me, that it's very much keyed to the efficiency of the mass transit. In other words, if you go do mag lab, if you do these other advance technologies that the price per passenger, per mile is dramatically lowered and, as the price of oil goes up—that goal, obviously isn't as hard to reach—but, if you can develop these technologies, which I am confident we will, that will carry a passenger further, at a—furthest—at a lower cost, we're gonna see an explosion of mass transit. I think you're gonna see of it—some of it like they're already talkin' about Dallas and Houston [...].</p>
<p>"Basically Amtrak, on the East Coast, is turning into a large, mass transit kind of an operation. I think you're gonna see the same thing on the West Coast and then obviously it will progress in the major cities in America. [...]"</p>

<p><p>Three months ago, <a href="http://www.releaseajaytg.in/">Indian authorities arrested Ajay TG</a>, the 35-year-old activist filmmaker who created films like this one entitled <em>Aisa Kyon?</em> (or <em>Why?</em>), on trumped up charges. The police held Ajay prisoner in the central Indian state of Chattisgarh, claiming he had violated the Chattisgarh Special Public Security Act (CSPSA). This anti-terrorism law, which went into effect in 2006 and bears a resemblance to our country's Patriot Act, criminalized political beliefs and associating with "banned" organizations. But what exactly was Ajay's crime?<br /><br />Ajay inadvertently carried a Swiss Army pocket knife in his backpack when he attended <a href="http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/ASA20/013/2007/en/dom-ASA200132007en.html">the trial of Dr. Binayak Sen</a>, a well-known doctor and social worker in Chattisgargh. Police on security detail apprehended Ajay and campaigned in the media that he was a terrorist threat. They further claimed Ajay had made "unlawful contact" with a Maoist organization, alleging Ajay wrote to the group asking them to return his camera after they robbed him years before.</p><p>Both the knife and the letter appear to have been red herrings. They provided Indian police with more concrete grounds to arrest Ajay when what they were really concerned with was his affiliation with Dr. Sen. Prior to his arrest, Ajay had been working on a documentary called<br /> <em>Anjam</em>, which portrayed Dr. Sen's life, work, and subsequent arrest. Police had arrested Dr. Sen in May 2007 under suspicion of being a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naxalite">Naxalite</a>, or armed communist. </p><p>Dr. Sen had worked for decades treating the adivasis, a term used to describe "the first people" or poor indigenous tribes of India. He was the Chattisgarh general secretary of the India's human rights organization the <a href="People&#39;s Union for Civil Liberties">People's Union for Civil Liberties</a> (of which Ajay was also a member), but was accused of being linked to members of a banned Maoist group, primarily because Dr. Sen had publicly criticized the State's creation of armed vigilante groups to combat Maoists. <a href="http://www.freebinayaksen.org/">What Dr. Sen had actually done</a> was call attention to the police involvement in the killings of 12 adivasis earlier that year and had opposed a State-sponsored vigilante army that had resulted in the killings of many innocents.</p></p>

<p>Left condemns Govt.'s move to circulate safeguard draft to IAEA's Board of Governors

<p>New Delhi, July 10: The Left parties, which decided to part ways with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the Indo-US nuclear deal, have criticized the Government's move of circulating the safeguard draft to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Board of Governors for their approval without proving majority in the parliament.

<p>Addressing a news conference in New Delhi on Thursday Prakash Karat, General Secretary of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said that they would make it impossible for the government to go ahead with the nuclear deal.</p>
<p>"We are going to fight at every step to stop this deal. That's not for some maneuvers in the parliament for a vote. We know how to fight against this deal. We have full confidence in the people of this country and we are sure that politically we will make it impossible for the government to go ahead with this deal," said Karat.</p>

<p>War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?</p>
<p>Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.</p>
<p>Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.</p>

<p>Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.</p>
<p>Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.</p>

<br />AUDIENCE MEMBER: "One of my biggest concerns is our sovereignty. We seem sometimes all too willing to turn over our decision-making processes to someone like the U.N. [...]"</p>
<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] You have a very dangerous situation [in Iran]. What should be happening at the United Nations is the United Nations Security Council enacting vigorous, tough sanctions, which would then modify Iranian behavior. But what happens [...]? The Russians will block meaningful action. [...]</p>
<p>"But you've got other countries, like India and China, who are growing and coming on the world stage. And it seems to me that we ought to work more closely with our allies [...]</p>
<p>"My friends, things are not going the way we want them to in Afghanistan [...] But at least we are there with a number of other countries, who are sending their young people to serve as well. [...] And we have to urge more of our friends and more of our allies, particularly within NATO, to dispatch more troops and help out in a lot more ways. [...]"</p>
