Many of Bihar's 90 million inhabitants come from low-caste backgrounds and are unable to even sign their own name. Consequently if you are born in the northeastern Indian state - the country's poorest - you are unlikely to ever be studying in the Indian Institutes of Technology, among the most sought-after universities in the world. However Anand Kumar, a brilliant mathematician, and Abhayanand, the local deputy police chief, decided to increase that likelihood for the young hopefuls of Bihar. They founded the Ramanujan Academy upon the premise that poverty, caste and religion should be no barrier to opportunity.

Longest Walk 2: Thirty Years After Historic Cross-Country March, Thousands Walk from San Francisco to D.C. for Native American Rights

Thirty years ago, some 40,000 Native Americans and their supporters participated in a historic cross-country march called the Longest Walk to protest congressional legislation that would have abrogated treaties protecting Native American sovereignty. On Friday, thousands are expected to gather in Washington, D.C. after another five-month-long journey across the country to draw attention to the state of the environment and press for the protection of sacred Native American sites. We speak with the co-founder of the American Indian Movement, Dennis Banks. [includes rush transcript]

We look at the battle for native American rights from two very different angles. First, a group of activists has set out on a 5,800km trek from San Francisco to Washington DC, promoting conservation, collecting rubbish, and raising awareness about their plight along the way. Organisers discusses the "Longest Walk" movement and what they hope to achieve.

At least 40 people, including Indian diplomats, have been killed and more than 100 others wounded in Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul, after an attack on the Indian embassy.

The Taliban denies it was behind the attack, while the Afghan government claims this was the work of what they deem 'regional influences'.

Hamid Karzai, president, said it was an abominable act of terrorism.

James Bays, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Kabul, reports.

Author and activist Raj Patel explains the economic history of global markets in food production.

-----

Raj Patel discusses Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System.

Half the world is malnourished, the other half obese—both symptoms of the corporate food monopoly. To show how a few powerful distributors control the health of the entire world, Raj Patel conducts a global investigation. What he uncovers is shocking—the real reasons for famine in Asia and Africa, an epidemic of farmer suicides, and the false choices and conveniences in supermarkets. Yet he also finds hope—in international resistance movements working to create a more democratic, sustainable, and joyful food system. From seed to store to plate, Stuffed and Starved explains the steps to regain control of the global food economy, stop the exploitation of farmers and consumers, and rebalance global sustenance - Cody's Books

Raj Patel received his PhD in Sociology from Cornell University and has worked at the World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations. He is a writer and activist concerned with land reform politics, development studies, and food sovereignty. He authored Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System.

Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp discusses how the U.S. and other developed nations can influence the environmental impacts of China and India's rapid growth.

-----

Fred Krupp discusses his new book Earth: The Sequel - The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming.

The Environmental Defense Fund helped reduce acid rain in the 1990s by using market forces, and last year it played a role in the buyout of Texas utility TXU that reduced the number of planned coal-fired power plants. The advocacy group's president, Fred Krupp, believes business-friendly approaches such as carbon cap-and-trade systems are the best way to fight global warning.

His new book, Earth: The Sequel, highlights the entrepreneurs, scientists, and even a former bus driver on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, who are betting on the free market to create new wealth and build a post-carbon economy - The Commonwealth Club of California

Fred Krupp is the Executive Director of Environmental Defense, a national environmental organization that links science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost effective solutions to the most critical environmental problems.

Krupp leads Environmental Defense’'s teams of scientists, attorneys, engineers, and economists in developing solution-oriented strategies to tackle a wide range of U.S. and international environmental problems including global warming; protection of endangered wildlife and ecosystems; restoration of inland, coastal and ocean habitats; elimination of environmental threats to human health; the protection of tropical rainforests.

Since Krupp joined Environmental Defense in 1984, its annual budget has increased from $3 million to more than $35 million, full-time staff has more than quadrupled from 50 to over 200, membership has expanded from 40,000 to more than 300,000, and new regional offices opened in North Carolina and Texas.

My parents stared at me hard when I broke the news to them: I wanted to study Political Science, instead of following the cultural norm of obtaining a BS in a computer-related field. They were unable to understand why I would give up the financial security and familiarity of computers to vie for a place in an insecure field. I shrugged and stated that I found it fascinating, unable to articulate my thoughts properly at the time.

Looking back, I realize that my overwhelming sense of otherness as a racial, gender, religious and un-naturalized minority led me to seek out an education that would ‘tolerate’ and ‘accept’ me. Politics is the site for the regimentation of Otherness. While it may not create difference, our politics of difference—border politics, immigration politics, racial politics and all kinds of identity politics—certainly sustain boundaries. I wrestled with the notion of a society that dehumanizes, marginalizes and forces me to live in the shadows while normatively dictating my most intimate relationships. I realized then that the existence of our multiple sites of enclaves hinged on the alienation of the individual and society. I was not about to live in a shell, protected and entitled to benefits given to particular social groups. I could not allow the underground life I led to render me voiceless and powerless; I had to take control of my destiny and help pave the way for change.

Thus, I am here blogging away. Sharing my thoughts and experiences with those reading these pieces is only a tiny step and a small part of the many ways I actively work to make a difference. Staring at numbers flitting across the screen in a tiny cubicle would probably secure my future, but living the stereotype would only add to the many boundaries between us. And I want to build bridges.
