Randall Balmer, Barnard College, and Jacques Berlinerblau, Georgetown University, share their expertise on the intersection of faith and politics in the United States, with specific reference to the current election cycle, moderated by Sondra Farganis, Director of the Wolfson Center for National Affairs.

Professor Balmer has written extensively about evangelical politics, a subject he addresses in his latest book, God in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush.

Randall Balmer, professor of American religious history at Barnard College, Columbia University, earned the Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1985. He has lectured at the Chautauqua Institution, the Commonwealth Club of California and the Smithsonian Associates and to audiences around the country, and he has been a visiting professor at Rutgers, Yale, Drew, Northwestern, and Princeton universities and at Union Theological Seminary, where he is also an adjunct professor.
He has been a visiting professor in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a visiting professor at Yale Divinity School.

A Muslim (Arabic: مسلم‎) is an adherent of the religion of Islam. The feminine form of 'Muslim' is Muslimah (Arabic: مسلمة‎). Literally, the word means "one who submits to God". The word "Muslim" is the participle of the same verb of which "Islam" is the infinitive. Muslims believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah. Muslims believe that Islam existed long before Muhammad and that the religion had evolved with time from the time of Adam till the time of Muhammad, and was completed with the revelation of verse 3 of Surah Al-Maeda"

The Qur'an describes many Biblical prophets and messengers as Muslim: Adam, Noah (Arabic: Nuh), Moses (Arabic: Musa) and Jesus (Arabic: Isa) and his apostles. The Qur'an states that these men were Muslims because they submitted to God, preached his message and upheld his values. Thus, in Surah 3:52 of the Qur'an, Jesus' disciples tell Jesus: "do thou bear witness that we are Muslims". Muslims pray five times a day; these five prayers are known as Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. There is also a special Friday prayer called Jumu'ah.

Most Muslims accept as a Muslim anyone who has publicly pronounced the Shahadah, which states, "There is none worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His Messenger." Currently, there are an estimated 1.4 billion Muslims, making it the second largest religion in the world.

Islam (Arabic: الإسلام; al-'islām (help·info)) is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a seventh century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits [to God]". There are between 1 billion to 1.8 billion Muslims, making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, after Christianity.

Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, God's final prophet, and regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Islamic tradition holds that Jews and Christians distorted the revelations God gave to these prophets by either altering the text, introducing a false interpretation, or both.

Islam includes many religious practices. Adherents are generally required to observe the Five Pillars of Islam, which are five duties that unite Muslims into a community. In addition to the Five Pillars, Islamic law (sharia) has developed a tradition of rulings that touch on virtually all aspects of life and society. This tradition encompasses everything from practical matters like dietary laws and banking to warfare and welfare.

Almost all Muslims belong to one of two major denominations, the Sunni (85%) and Shi'a (15%). The schism developed in the late 7th century following disagreements over the religious and political leadership of the Muslim community. Islam is the predominant religion throughout the Middle East, as well as in major parts of Africa and Asia. Large communities are also found in China, the Balkan Peninsula in Eastern Europe and Russia. There are also large Muslim immigrant communities in other parts of the world, such as Western Europe. About 20% of Muslims live in Arab countries, 30% in the Indian subcontinent and 15.6% in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country by population.

Fernando Suarez del Solar, father of Jesus, who died a few months into the war, speaks to peace marchers in San Diego on the 4th anniversary of the War in Iraq.

I cannot think of a braver man in America, and perhaps in all the world, than Fernando Suarez del Solar. At a time of unprecedented scapegoating and rising hate crimes against Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the United States, after having lost his beloved son to the illegal war in Iraq, with very little English ability, this man continues to criss-cross the nation and the globe with his plea for justice and peace. He is Cindy Sheehan, if Cindy had been born in Mexico, if Cindy had traveled repeatedly to Iraq to help the children harmed by war there.

I had the honor to meet Mr. Suarez some years back, and there was something of Ghandi to him. I am sad to say his recent emails have been depressing in tone, weary, as though he is close to giving up. He is stunned by the apathy, the brutality, and, worst of all, the hostility he has met in the Mexican and Mexican-American communities of the nation, where his message of peace, and his encouragement of Latino kids to stay OUT of the military (where we are dying in much higher proportion to our population size), is too often criticized as unpatriotic. God bless you, Mr. Suarez. Keep fighting the good fight, sir. You are a hero, and today I think of your son, and your loss, and I send you positive energy and love.
