Green jobs are expanding, but not nearly fast enough, says Jill Kubit of Cornell University. Most of them are in developed countries, and they make up less than 5% of jobs in most countries across the board.

Nancy Pelosi, California Congresswoman and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, offers advice for women in politics.

-----

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi talks about Know Your Power: A Message to America's Daughters.

When Nancy Pelosi became the first woman speaker of the House, she made history. She gavelled the House to order that day on behalf of all of America's children and said, "We have made history, now let us make progress."

Now she continues to inspire women everywhere in this thought-provoking collection of wise words—-her own and those of the important people who played pivotal roles in her journey - Book Passage

Since 1987, Nancy Pelosi has represented California's Eighth District in the House of Representatives. The Eighth District includes most of the City of San Francisco, including Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and many of the diverse neighborhoods that make San Francisco a vibrant and prosperous community.

Overwhelmingly elected by her colleagues in the fall of 2002 as Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi is the first woman in American history to lead a major party in the U.S. Congress. Before being elected leader, she served as House Democratic Whip for one year and was responsible for the party's legislative strategy in the House. On January 4, 2007, Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Denver, CO 10/02/08

MCCAIN: I do believe that there are many occasions where the nature of the media is to exaggerate things and perhaps not be as accurate as we would like them to be, but let me say very seriously, I think that one of the biggest causes of this problem was not so much the media. In fact, I don't think that the media was responsible for what happened at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. I believe that there was, in all seriousness, I love to bash the media all the time, but the point is the beginnings of this crisis were such a corrupt system in Washington that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac basically got completely out of control.

Their executives got exorbitant, huge amounts of pay packages. Meanwhile, they encouraged all this risky behavior in the real estate market and the crisis built larger and larger and meanwhile, members of congress--not just lobbyists, but members of congress were complicit in not trying to rein in--not only not trying to rein in, but encouraged this kind of behavior and that I really believe was the major, catalytic factor in bringing about the crisis that we are in, which, as you know, has spread and that combined with the greed on Wall Street--in all due candor, I cannot blame that on the media.

I have to blame that on failure to oversight [sic], failure of transparency, a failure of congress and watchdog agencies to enforce existing regulations that exist and it's a failure, frankly, of many of us in congress--many members of congress. By the way, I proposed two years ago legislation that would have reined in Fannie and Freddie. I said that this was gonna get out of control. So, again, a serious answer--I'd love to blame the media. I'll blame them for a lot of other things, but not on this one.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/09/economic_recovery.html

In these tumultuous days, it is often overlooked that the fate of Wall Street is, in this particular case, especially intertwined with the fortunes of Main Street. The connecting link isn’t just a matter of stock market volatility, but rather underlying problems in the credit markets. Lenders on Wall Street, and those who provide lenders their capital, are unable or unwilling to lend or invest because of the mortgage crisis. If nothing is done, the already large and growing impact on the routine borrowing of businesses will become even more acute. Businesses will face problems meeting payroll, purchasing inventory, and making investments—consequences reaching far beyond Wall Street. Personal credit for auto loans, student loans, credit cards and, of course, mortgages will also become harder to come by.

The housing, mortgage, and financial mess have already ensnared the labor market. Jobs have declined for eight consecutive months in total non-farm employment. Not all job loss can be directly linked to the current financial mess, but it is safe to say that job losses have continued and the economy’s ability to mount a recovery is hampered by the turmoil. Since the start of 2008, the economy has lost a total of 605,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate hit 6.1 percent in August 2008, up from 5.0 percent at the end of 2007. The number of unemployed climbed to 9.4 million from 7.6 million over the same period.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/09/conservatives_pain.html

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/09/real_solutions.html

Michael Ettlinger of the Center for American Progress offers his take on the latest news out of Washington and the financial markets after U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and President George W. Bush yesterday failed to convince a majority of their own party in Congress that the consequences of failing to pass their $700 billion financial rescue package could be catastrophic for the U.S. economy. The American people over the next few days will catch a glimpse of the consequences in financial markets, at their hometown banks, and at their jobs, but should congressional inaction persist we may not experience the full brunt for a month or more.

Thats why these next few days will be so telling. If those who opposed the rescue package in Congress do not feel responsible for the leading edge of the problems they have allowed to grow—as prices fall, borrowing costs rise, and more and more small- to medium-sized companies and financial institutions are unable to access credit—then they are unlikely to change their minds about the bailout plan. If their constituents do not get antsy as the problems of Wall Street start to spread to the companies they work for and to their own access to credit, and they do not demand action—no action may be forthcoming.

Will the financial markets spook enough of the dissenters to change their vote on the bill, which fell only 12 votes shy of passage? That probably depends most immediately on how dramatic the reaction is in the commercial paper market, which was largely done with trading yesterday before the bailout bill went down to defeat. This vital credit marketplace—where companies tap short-term credit to smooth out their cash flow needs to make payroll and pay suppliers in a timely fashion—could react sharply today. This mornings record high for the benchmark London Interbank Offer Rate—the rate at which ...

MCCAIN: "Let's have transparency. The American people have the right to know which firms will be helped, what selection will be based on, and how much that help will cost. The details of the process and the transaction itself should be made available online for public scrutiny. And as Congress examines this package, I would encourage all members to set aside the pressures of Washington and Wall Street. As we determine what to do, we need to put our country first and focus what's best for Main Street. It's the excess and greed of Washington and Wall Street that got us in this situation to start with. We must help keep people in their homes, we must protect American's savings, and we must keep students with loans in school. What we need in any reform is accountability for Wall Street, and accountability for government, and a commitment to protecting people's homes and life savings, and restoring our financial markets. Times are tough, times are tough for our economy, and I expect more tough economic news before the election. My commitment to the American people is to fix the Wall Street mess, reform Washington, and most importantly enact a pro-growth agenda to create jobs for Americans and get this country back on track. That's what I promise you."

MCCAIN: "We won't solve a problem caused by poor oversight with a plan that has no oversight, and part of the reason we're facing this crisis is an antiquated regulatory system of uncoordinated agencies that just haven't been doing their job. I believe that we need a high level of oversight board to impose accountability and establish concrete criteria for who gets help and who doesn't. They must ensure that throughout this crisis, the government is a careful stewart of the taxpayer dollars. This oversight board should be bi-partisan and have qualified citizens who have no agenda but the protection of taxpayers and the financial markets. People like Warren Buffet who supports my opponent, Governor Mitt Romney, or maybe Michael Bloomberg, an independent to oversee this."

QUESTIONER: "My question has to do with jobs offshoring. The company I work for is a Fortune 500 company, I've been there for 21 years, and speculation is that over the next two weeks or so they're going to downsize or offshore 1,500 jobs. My father retired from the company, I had hoped to retire, but I'm a father of four children, and I was just wondering, what can we do about getting these jobs to stay here in the United States, instead of going to places like India?"

MCCAIN: "I thank you for the question and I want to give you, to start with, my utmost sympathy in the challenge that you may be facing. And this is happening all over America, it's happened in the heartland of America, as you well know. States like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, where we've lost the manufacturing jobs. And I've got a lot of answers, but I've like to give you two. One of them is, we have such a high business tax in America that it makes it attractive for these companies and corporations to go overseas. The business tax in Ireland, in the country of Ireland, is 11 percent. The business tax in the United States of America is 35 percent. Now you are a business or a corporation, you're a business and you have a decision to make. It's obvious that you are probably going to go where you can maximize your profits, etc. etc. And I don't need to tell you how well trained and educated the work force in Ireland is. So that's the first thing. And the long term answer is we got to an education and retraining program for displaced workers so that we go to the community colleges, they take the responsibility and the ability to design programs and training and education so that people can enter what is going to be the new economy in America. And that new economy, to a large degree in my view is going to be based on alternate energy. It's going to be based on the innovation, the talent, the entrepreneurship of America as we develop hydrogen cars and battery driven cars, and we build 45 new nuclear power plants by the year 2030, which creates 700,000 new jobs. Where we address the issue of climate change and energy independence so that the new technologies and the new ideas and the innovation of America will bring millions of jobs to America. And that's going to be key to a great degree to this national security issue I mentioned before of our dependency on foreign oil, which now causes us to develop these new technologies, create millions of new jobs in America. But we got to have the right kind of education in America and education and training programs for displaced workers. And if an older worker loses his job because of a manufacturing job, then I'm willing if that worker has to take a much lower paying job while they're undergoing that reeducation and training, let's subsidize their wages. We know how sacred a job is in America. We know a job is more than a job. So look, I got to look you in the eye and tell you these are tough times in America. We may be facing the greatest financial crisis since the end of World War II in the history of this country. These are tough times, but it's a time for tough leadership, it's a time for someone who knows how to work across the party aisle, who can work in a bi-partisan fashion, and get something done. We have to reform the way we do business, get rid in Washington, get rid of this cronyism and special interest and money that's washing around Washington, and the corruption, and at the same time we have to make government responsive. And let me just say, we have to bring back prosperity and jobs. I know how to reform and bring back prosperity and jobs. I know how to reach across the aisle to do that. And my friends, it's time for strong leadership in this country. I'm ready to provide it. And I have been prepared all my life, all my life, in doing one thing, that's what America wants more than anything else now in a President of the United States, its put our country first. That's what I'll do."
