JOHN MCCAIN: "Wants to divide them into three countries? I think they are Iraqis first. I notice that as things have gotten in Iraq that that theory has succeeded. [...] One: the Turks would never allow an independent Kurdistan. [...] people live in neighborhoods next to each other. Sunnis and Shiite--some of them are married to each other. I think it's very difficult to achieve that. I think the Iraqi government--very disappointed--but it's starting to show a little progress."

Yeah, but who's going to monitor ours?

Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joseph Biden will join 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and Republican Chuck Hagel in a visit aimed at helping make sure the vote is fair. Biden predicts a rigged election would spark rioting throughout Pakistan. And he says if it's determined the vote is not fair, the U.S. should cut Pakistan's military aid.

Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice says U.S. Embassy staffers and European officials will be among the outsiders observing the balloting. She says the election must inspire confidence that Pakistan's citizens can vote freely.

It's reassuring that they care so much about fair elections and voting freely. It's almost as reassuring as knowing how fair our own elections are, and the confidence we all have in the system. Maybe Pakistan can send over some minders.

Yes, it's time to steal a few more jokes from my father-in-law. For those of you who might be new here, he used to write for Alan King, Milton Berle and Jonathan Winters, just to name a few. And all those Dean Martin Roasts, too: Don Rickles, Red Buttons, Phyllis Diller, Sammy Davis, Jr., etc.

A tiny respite from all the frustrating events of the day:

The Iowa Caucus is over and we should have guessed Baptist Minister, MIKE HUCKABEE, would be the Republican winner. He received such great support from the religious right. After every speech they gave him a kneeling ovation.

It seems THOMPSON has an identity problem. People recognize him.

On the Democratic side. After HILLARY's loss in Iowa she announced, from now until November she intends to get really tough with OBAMA. She just replaced her top campaign strategist with HULK HOGAN.

Overheard at CLINTON campaign headquarters: "Will someone tell BILL O'REILLY he has the right to remain silent!"

Senators JOE BIDEN and CHRISTOPHER DODD have decided to quit their run for the Oval office. It seems during the caucuses Iowa voters stood up and gave them both a rousing round of indifference.

Awww, poor Joe and Chris! A big round of applause for them both! And don't forget to tip your WGA member on the way out...with the exception of Jay Leno.

Listen to what he has to say about Pakistan. In a country run by a foreign policy moron (not to mention domestic policy, understanding science, ingesting pretzels...), Joe Biden is at the very least worth listening to...
