<p><p>Syndicated columnist E. J. Dionne had these observations (via <em><strong>The Capital Times</strong></em> of cyberspace, via Madison, WI) on the "new improved" John McCain being so far removed from the "old" such that it may be his own electoral undoing:</p><blockquote><p>ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Once upon a time, John McCain promised to be a different kind of politician and a different kind of Republican. He was about straight talk, reform and nonpartisanship, a resolute foe of the slashing politics of the slaughterhouse.</p><p>McCain tried to get voters to remember that man in his acceptance speech Thursday night, the one who "worked with members of both parties to fix the problems that need to be fixed." But that man has disappeared.</p><p>The stage in the middle of the cavernous Xcel Energy Center was rearranged so McCain could conjure the feel of the town hall meetings he loves as he laced into "partisan rancor" and "the Washington crowd." Yet a set change could not disguise the fact that this convention -- including the big speech Wednesday by his running mate, Sarah Palin -- dripped with divisive ridicule as speaker after speaker worked to aggravate the country's cultural schisms and replay worn-out harangues against weak liberals.</p><p>The Republican crowd here has gleefully played into the worst stereotypes of their party as a privileged class resistant to change.</p><p>When Rudy Giuliani referred to Barack Obama's past as a "community organizer" Wednesday, the crowd broke into ugly, patronizing laughter. These, presumably, are people who never needed a neighborhood advocate. Imagine if Democrats ever reacted that way to someone who worked as an entrepreneur or a church leader.</p><p>And it's unlikely that even a convention of the American Petroleum Institute would erupt into raucous chants of "drill, baby, drill!"</p><p>McCain could not change his party, so he changed himself. McCain has pandered to a Republican right wing he once disdained on issue after issue, from oil drilling to immigration to tax cuts for the wealthy.</p><p>Just as important, he decided that his last chance for the presidency rests on a systematic effort to make the old politics of demonization work one more time. If McCain's convention is a prelude to the fall campaign, he will leave behind a legacy of bitterness that will turn his promise of a new day into ashes.</p><p>His single most cynical act was choosing Palin as his running mate, "cynical" being the word used by former adviser and friend Mike Murphy, the Republican consultant caught by an open microphone.</p><p>McCain knows that the first requirement in a running mate is preparation to succeed to the presidency. The choices he preferred, by all accounts, included Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge, both plausible presidents.</p><p>But when it became clear that their support for abortion rights rendered both men politically toxic, McCain veered toward the last-minute pick of Palin. McCain barely knew her, and his campaign misled reporters about the extent to which she had been vetted. It was a political choice: Palin, McCain hopes, will help him win over women and rally social conservatives.</p><p>Palin's address here got boffo reviews from many of the very "reporters and commentators" whose good opinion the Alaska governor dismissed, but her speech was as cynical as the decision to put her on the ticket.</p><p>She joined in the campaign's fake populism by deriding legitimate concerns about her record, her knowledge and her governing style as the carping of the "political establishment" and the "Washington elite." She ran as the tribune of "small-town" Americans by way of suggesting that worries about her readiness to be president amounted to an assault on all who hail from localities of modest size. She dared to compare herself to Harry Truman.</p><p>She then proceeded to distort Obama's views on taxes, mock his eloquence and accuse him of wanting "to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world." And she demonstrated how little she respects constitutional rights with this chilling declaration: "Al-Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America; he's worried that someone won't read them their rights."</p><p>But these thoughts, of course, were not really Palin's. They were words prepared by the campaign of John McCain, the unifier turned divider. One night later, the unifier tried to come back, promising to reach out "to any willing patriot," criticizing his own party, urging that we use "the best ideas from both sides" and pledging to "ask Democrats and independents to serve with me."</p><p>It will be a hard sell because McCain has capitulated to the very Washington he condemned Thursday night and is employing the very tactics that were used ruthlessly and unfairly against him when he first ran for president eight years ago.</p><p>Perhaps the new McCain will somehow claw his way to the White House. But it's the old McCain who deserved to be president. A single speech on a September night is not enough to resurrect the man who might once have brought the country together.</p></blockquote><p>On that last point, let us recall what Abraham Lincoln said about "a house divided against itself cannot stand"--and that such may be a rallying cry to action in this compressed electoral campaign.</p><p>========================</p><p>"Don't let 'em fool you, bro; read (and shop) <strong><a href="http://exaggerator.blogdrive.com/" title="The Exaggerator">The Exaggerator</a></strong> @ any and every online opportunity...."</p></p>

<p><p> (Last night, during his primetime speech from the podium at the Republican National Convention, Senator Joe Lieberman made the following statement: "... if John McCain is just another partisan Republican, then I'm Michael Moore's favorite Democrat. And I'm not. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwv_zdLp6m4">And I think you know that I'm not</a>.") </p> <p> Dear Joe: </p> <p> John McCain IS just another partisan Republican -- so that must mean you ARE my favorite Democrat! </p> <p> But how can you be my favorite Democrat when you are no longer a Democrat? This is very confusing. I was in the middle of taking out the garbage and, all of a sudden, there you were, trash-talking me in front of thousands of cheering (mostly) white people on TV. </p> <p> What is it with you and your Republican friends always bringing me up? Can't you stop thinking about me? It's starting to sound like a fetish! Stop it! Four years ago at the last Republican Convention, John McCain, in his convention speech, also trashed me, calling me a "disingenuous filmmaker" because I called all of you out in "Fahrenheit 9/11." <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzybUF6RCWk">The crowd at Madison Square Garden went berserk</a>. McCain didn't know I was sitting above him in the press box, and the crowd wouldn't stop screaming at me, so I flashed them the "<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/08/31/mccain.moore/index.html">Big L</a>" loser sign and, well, nine of New York's finest had to help me get out of there alive. </p> <p> With all the problems facing the world, why is valuable time being wasted reviewing a movie and attacking a filmmaker? And now you, Joe, tonight. Do you think you're energizing the "base" by attacking me? Better take a look at the scoreboard. While your side has spent years trying to make me the boogeyman, let's see how it's worked: </p> <ul><li> 2006 Congressional elections: Republicans lose 30 seats in the House and 6 seats in the Senate; </li><li>States That Have Lost a Republican Governor (and elected a Democrat) since 2002: Kansas, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Tennessee -- EACH ONE OF THEM A RED STATE!; </li><li>Latest Gallup Poll: Obama hit 50% yesterday for the first time for either candidate, 8 points ahead of McCain! </li></ul> <p> Do you see the trend? </p></p>

<p>For the first time, Senator Barack Obama has touched the 50% mark. Obama's groundbreaking acceptance speech has helped. The hurricanes overshadowed the VP pick of Senator John McCain, Sarah Palin. Conservative talk radio's influences are not helping boost Senator McCain. The Electoral College is still Obama 273 - McCain 265. Recent controversies surrounding Palin and McCain have not helped them in the polls.

<br />Southern state governors from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida are going to use Hurricanes Gustav and Hanna to boost Senator John McCain. Hurricane Hanna is coming for the Southeastern United States. Pray for the people in the Southeast and Gulf Coast states. </p>
<p>Thanks for viewing and post your comments at the bottom. Take a stand against the corporate owned media and turn that television, radio and internet smear machine off. Let the real media analysis do the hard work for you. Don't let the media control your voice, your thoughts and your vote.</p>
<p>Minneapolis will hold the Revolution Convention, with former Republican Presidential candidate congressman Ron Paul. Amy Goodman, veteran journalist from Democracy Now was arrested. Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama are taking a slow down in regards to three potential major hurricanes. The protesters scare Republican delegates. Anarchist plots to disrupt convention thwarted (for now)! </p>
<p>Most of the mainstream media (except Fox News) all but bounced the GOP Convention. Will they return back? Louisiana and Texas governors Bobby Jindal and Rick Perry are prepared now. Or course, they are, they want to make the Republicans look like they are prepared for the domestic security. The first lady and potential first lady called for donations to those who may lose their homes. Lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain spoke at the Republican convention. Has Independent Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman made his appearance? Will he do what the energetic former Georgia Democratic Senator Zell Miller did at the 2004 GOP Convention? Already bloggers are posting videos in preparation of Lieberman. Just in case, the senator makes any attacks on Senator Obama. There's a video I found from the Crooks & Liars website to retort Senator Lieberman's accusations. Lieberman praises Obama and calls him a "bouruk"! Ah, can we smell the dun?</p>
<p>Critics: Ok, critics. Seeing you have been beating around the bush about Senator Barack Obama's so-called "socialist" economic plan, I want to know what does McCain's plan for the economy, home foreclosure, high oil prices, high food prices, the environment and how to deal with the health care crisis. Don't give me that Newt Gingrich mantra about "Drill Here, Drill Now, Save Less" motto. That's flopped two months ago, when an oil barrage was damaged in the Mississippi River. </p>
<p>-What has John McCain laid out for the economy?
<br />-Why hasn't John McCain vetted his pick Sarah Palin without proper suggestions?
<br />-Could this be the Mitt Romney supporters against McCain?
<br />-Will this get more play than the Hillary Clinton supporters against Obama?
<br />-Why did John McCain run attacks ads through the mainstream media, when he clearly knows Barack Obama and praised him for his dedication?
<br />-Why does talk radio keeps spinning John McCain's POW and military experiences?
<br />-Why does Americans feel that our government is failing the grade when covering the issues that are truly important?
<br />-Why are we so focused on conservative issues [patriotism, gun rights, military experiences, abortions, illegal immigration and campaign finance reform], when real issues [economy, oil prices, home foreclosure and high food prices] overshadow the issues once known to have damaging effects on Democratic candidates?</p>

<p><p>Joe Lieberman's days in the Democratic caucus are numbered. Yesterday on <em>Meet the Press</em>, Lieberman practically admitted he will speak at the RNC convention, thereby completing his defection to the Republican party that began when he split with Dems to endorse John McCain. Host Tom Brokaw confronted Lieberman about our <a href="http://liebermanmustgo.com/">Lieberman Must Go</a> petition, with over 51,000 signatures demanding the Steering Committee strip Lieberman of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship in January 2009.</p><p>This wasn't the first time someone from the mainstream press has confronted Lieberman about this petition—the Lieberman Must Go movement to has only gained steam (and signatures) since we <a href="../blog/45321-a-grassroots-victory-lieberman-must-go">delivered the petition in Washington DC</a> in early July. But to be sure, the Steering Committee will have an icreasingly difficult time ignorning this growing public outcry as more national news outlets call attention to Lieberman's ideological treachery.</p><p>Rather than heeding the petition as a warning, Lieberman sealed his own fate. As <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2008/08/03/lieberman-must-go-convention/">Faiz Shakir noted over at Think Progress</a>, by speaking at the RNC convention, Lieberman will basically be endorsing their platforms on everything from the environment to immigration to a woman's right to choose. How can the Steering Committee overlook Lieberman's hypocritical stances on these issues? What's more, how can they overlook such a glaring betrayal of the Democratic party? </p></p>
