House Judiciary Committee filing suit over contempt citation

Just heard on the Thom Hartmann Show, but here's more:

The House is planning to file a lawsuit early this week challenging the Bush administration's assertion of executive privilege to shield current and former White House officials from congressional subpoenas.
The lawsuit represents an untested strategy in the historical back-and-forth between Congress and the executive branch over the government's fundamental separation of powers.

John Conyers is confident that the federal courts will agree with them, but it will end up going to the Supremes, and by that time Bush will be gone.

How sad, says Hartmann, that, Attorney General Mukasey is given the respnsibility to enforce laws made by Congress, but is refusing to enforce the contempt citation that Congress just passed.

This should lead to the impeachment of Mukasey, but of course it won't.

John Conyers wants special counsel to investigate CIA torture tapes

Good. Mukasey's investigation isn't enough for John Conyers, who wants a special counsel:

But Durham's appointment did not satisfy House Judiciary Committee Chairman Conyers, who wants a special counsel appointed instead. Conyers said Mukasey "stepped outside the Justice Department's own regulations" by refusing to appoint a special counsel. [...] "Because of this action, the Congress and the American people will be denied — as they were in the Valerie Plame matter — any final report on the investigation."

It doesn't stop there:

Conyers added: "Equally disappointing is the limited scope of this investigation, which appears limited to the destruction of two tapes. The government needs to scrutinize what other evidence may have been destroyed beyond the two tapes, as well as the underlying allegations of misconduct associated with the interrogations."

I love hearing this, but we've heard it all before. Can we get it done this time?

Conyers criticizied DOJ's handling of internal Bush administration probes, saying the "Justice Department’s record over the past seven years of sweeping the administration’s misconduct under the rug has left the American public with little confidence in the Administration’s ability to investigate itself," and said "nothing less than with a special counsel with a full investigative mandate" will satisfy him.

Just nail these people, once and for all. We're all exhausted from getting our hopes up for nothing.

Remember the one about the Democratic governor being prosecuted as a result of a Republican political vendetta?

Attorneys for a congressional committee will question an Alabama lawyer under oath next week about her claims that a Republican campaign operative talked about White House influence over the investigation of former Alabama Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman.

Here's another knee-slapper: Requests for more DOJ docs.

...more than 40 former attorneys general have called for an investigation of the Siegelman prosecution and that Conyers and U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, have asked the Justice Department to turn over documents related to the Siegelman investigation.

"She has gone from being a lone voice to one of several dozen"...

With any luck, the joke will be on the administration. Punch line, and tell me if you've heard this one before: An eventual guilty verdict on all counts.

Impeachment For Dick Cheney Is Almost "On The Table"

Considering that a majority of Americans think Chickenhawk Cheney should be impeached, it's nice to see democracy almost working.

Here is a message from democrats.com, one of our partners in our campaign to push the only logical course of action for this hideous human being, who violates the constitution like it's a bodily function:

Call Congress Today for Impeachment
We've reached the impeachment moment for Vice President Dick Cheney. We've pushed the cosponsor list for H. Res. 333 up to 14. Chairman John Conyers says that if we get 3 more he'll begin the impeachment proceedings. And many Congress Members must be recognizing that there is no other path available.
Cheney and Bush have repeatedly refused to comply with subpoenas, ordered former staffers not to comply, and announced that the Justice Department will not enforce contempt citations from Congress. When a special prosecutor attempted to hold this administration accountable, Cheney's chief of staff obstructed justice, and Cheney persuaded Bush to commute his sentence. There is no course left for Congress but Impeachment.
