The head of Afghanistan's spy agency has accused Pakistan of refusing to arrest the man they say was behind the bombing of the Indian embassy in Kabul.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Amrullah Saleh says that his agency gave the man's details to Pakistani officials but that the authorities have failed to act.

2008 Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama calls for an increased military and diplomatic focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan, an area he identifies as the most critical front in the global fight against terrorism.

-----

Barack Obama: "A New Strategy for a New World"

Senator Barack Obama gives a policy address on Iraq and National Security at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, D.C. This program was recorded on July 15, 2008.

Barack Hussein Obama (born August 4, 1961), is the junior United States Senator from Illinois. According to the U.S. Senate Historical Office, he is the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history and the only African American currently serving in the U.S. Senate. He is a candidate for the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential nomination.

He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996. Four years later, he made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Obama won reelection to the state senate in 2002, running unopposed. As early as 2002, he was a critic of the proposed Iraq War, declaring in a television interview that he would have voted against the Iraq Resolution. In 2004, he ran for an open seat in the U.S. Senate. Midway through the campaign, Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and became a nationally known political figure. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2004 with a landslide 70% of the vote.

Obama formally announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election in Springfield, Illinois, on February 10, 2007.

Wahington Independent reporter Spencer Ackerman rides through Kabul, Afghanistan on his way to Bagram Airfield. Here are his impressions:

"One of the first things I did when arriving in Kabul was to take out my video camera and record as much of the hour-long ride to Bagram Airfield as I could. To be totally candid, I didn’t have a clue what to expect. Would Kabul be a war-torn but still modern capitol, as Baghdad is? Or would it brim with the destitution and desolation I would encounter along the Pakistani border. As I found, the answer was: Both."

When the government dispatched 3,000 British troops to southern Afghanistan in the spring of 2006 to join the limited number who had been there as part of an international security force (Isaf) since 2001, John Reid, then defence secretary, expressed the hope that they would accomplish their mission without a shot being fired.

Just as in Iraq, it was a hope based on bad intelligence and little or no idea of the nature of the enemy.

The troops set up a base in Helmand province without a clear mission and with Britain and its Nato allies at sixes and sevens about their rules of engagement. From the beginning, the relations of British military commanders with Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, and the country's local governors were fraught. British commanders sent soldiers to forward bases where they were vulnerable to Taliban fighters. Local peace deals fell apart.

Radovan Karadzic will face charges of genocide at The Hague.

His lawyers said the former Bosnian Serb leader plans to defend himself at the tribunal.

He has been held in a Belgrade prison since his arrest on Monday, awaiting an appeal that is unlikely to prevent his extradition to face genocide charges.

Karadzic's supporters who maintain he is a war hero - clashed with riot police again a day after his arrest.

Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan reports on one of the most wanted men in Europe posing as a Doctor Dragan Dabic.

At least 40 people, including Indian diplomats, have been killed and more than 100 others wounded in Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul, after an attack on the Indian embassy.

The Taliban denies it was behind the attack, while the Afghan government claims this was the work of what they deem 'regional influences'.

Hamid Karzai, president, said it was an abominable act of terrorism.

It was meant to unify Afghanistan — the Kabul to Kandahar Highway. But having spent hundreds of millions of dollars relinking Afghanistan's two largest cities, the United States has lost control of the road to the Taliban. And what was meant to be a symbol of triumph, is now one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

Despite large international aid donations, hundreds of Afghan children are living in squalour in Kabul, the capital.

Aid groups say malnutrition is rampant across the country, and access to healthcare is limited.

For every thousand Afghan children born, 165 die within a year - and a quarter of all Afghan children die before their fifth birthday.

Al Jazeera's Owen Fay reports.

When the Taliban controlled Afghanistan before the 2001 invasion, entertainment of any kind was banned. But ironically, in their attempt to regain control of the country, their propaganda is now being disseminated using television, videos and music. And as Hamish Macdonald reports, tapes like those received by Al Jazeera can be quite revealing.

This conflict is largely viewed from the side of Nato and US forces. Media access is regularly granted and journalists often travel to the frontline. Rarely though do we see these battles from the other side. The Taliban, in an apparent attempt to display its resurgence has delivered 14 tapes to Al Jazeera. We cannot be certain when or where these images were filmed.

Among the footage are attacks on Afghan police vehicles. The tape shows one person trying to escape, before being shot. The cars are then set alight. Another tape shows Taliban fighters proudly displaying what they discovered last year at an empty US military out-post. They appear particularly intrigued by the night-vision goggles.

Waheed Mozhdah, former Taliban foreign ministry adviser, said: "The Taliban like to show powerful himself and show the enemy weak. I don't know how much the people believe that in the villages."

The Taliban carried out a month-long campaign of suicide bombings and roadside attacks during Ramadan. These tapes demonstrate some of the techniques being used.

Nato and US led coalition forces here say they have made major gains against the enemy during recent months. The Taliban though claims its securing support in a growing number of provinces. But with so much propaganda being disseminated from all sides, its difficult for anyone here to know just how much of it is true.

One tape, showing Taliban pushing live donkeys off cliff, provides an insight into the mindset of those fighting this conflict.

And from the US side as well. These images from a Dutch television documentary were among the tapes sent to us by the Taliban.

The desire to gain the psychological advantage has meant that armed groups here and across the Middle East have now embraced propaganda in a big way. On all sides of the Afghan conflict there is an awareness that while the battles are important, the message may help win the war.

Al Jazeera's Hamish MacDonald reports on Saturday's suicide attack on a US military convoy in Kabul. It is six years since US forces arrived in Afghanistan, but signs abound that the Taliban is fighting back. At 8.15 on Saturday morning occurred the latest strike - a suicide bomber drove directly into a US convoy. This is the already the most violent year this country has seen since the fall of the Taliban. It claims this attack is the thirteenth suicide bombing carried out during Ramadan. At least four vehicles were destroyed and again, women and children were among the casualties. US and Nato soldiers secured the scene as the wounded were taken to hospital. Government officials have condemned the violence, but once again the Taliban is warning more bombings should be expected by the end of Ramadan.
