During an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), CBS Evening News host Katie Couric noted that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) said recently that “there might have been improved security [in Iraq] even without the surge” and asked McCain, “What’s your response to that?”

After first calling Obama’s claim “a false depiction of what actually happened,” McCain proceeded to falsely claim that the surge “began the Anbar awakening“:

McCAIN: I don’t know how you respond to something that is such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel McFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that’s just a matter of history.

But in a puzzling move, the CBS Evening News did not actually televise McCain’s false claim tonight. As MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann reported, “CBS curiously, to say the least, left it on the edit room floor. It aired Katie Couric’s question, but in response, it inserted part of McCain’s answer to another question instead.”

The Clinton campaign today announced that Hillary has accepted an invitation to participate in a primetime debate hosted by ABC. The debate will be held in Philadelphia, PA in advance of the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary. The debate will be broadcast statewide and nationally.

Today, Barack Obama accepted invitations to nationally televised debates with Senator Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia on April 16th and in North Carolina on April 19th.

Couric Admits Feeling NBC Pressure On Iraq

This is the sad state of our corporate-owned media. Katie Couric is now admitting she felt "corporate pressure" to ease off of Condi Rice and The Bush Administration overall after a "tough interview" she conducted:

After the interview, Couric said she received an email from an NBC exec "forwarded without explanation" from a viewer who wrote that she had been "unnecessarily confrontational."
"I think there was a lot of undercurrent of pressure not to rock the boat for a variety of reasons, where it was corporate reasons or other considerations," she said in an interview with former journalist and author Marvin Kalb during "The Kalb Report" forum at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

It's not as if we don't know this kind of thing is going on. We have ample evidence from Fox's Bush Administration boot-licking to payola pundits, fake newscasts, the firing of Donahue even though you couldn't see Tucker Carlson's ratings from where his were, when he was canned (for attacking our rationale on Iraq), etc. and so forth.

But for some reason, I still get that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I hear stories like this. It reminds me that as skeptical as I am of our corporate-crony media, I am not skeptical enough.

Upon finishing his work at the Constitutional Convention, a woman walked up to Benjamin Franklin and asked him what type of government our Constitution would birth.

Franklin famously replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."

That about sums up this and other sordid episodes too numerous to recount here that perfectly embody the spirit of the Bush years.

"Liberal" Media Strikes Again! MoveOn Compiles Katie Couric’s Fluffball Iraq Reporting

Back in June, I wrote a post about FOX’s ridiculous attack on Katie Couric’s decision to report from Iraq. While I have very little respect for Couric and don’t consider TV news anchorpeople to be journalists, I thought it was crazy and bizarre that FOX would not only question Couric’s parenting skills, but would also claim to be an authority on what constitutes good journalism. And if going to Iraq allowed Couric to tell stories or give perspectives that most Americans had not seen, that would be a good thing. And if she did, it would make FOX look pretty stupid.

Turns out that FOX had nothing to worry about, since all Couric did was float puff piece after puff piece, parroting everything the Bush administration has been saying for years without question. When angry viewers wrote in to complain at the lack of substance to her reporting, CBS responded by attacking the intelligence of those viewers by associating them with that evil of evil, blogs (an evil that is making the traditional media increasingly obsolete). No wonder Couric’s week in Iraq garnered record low ratings — everyone’s tired of Bush’s BS, no matter whose mouth it’s spewing from.

MoveOn did a great compilation of Couric’s fluff. MoveOn has put out a few videos lately, which is hopefully a sign that they’ve finally realized that buying ads and commercials is a huge waste of time and money, even if what they said was right. Internet video is the way to go.

Amazing. I used to respect Couric, yet for some reason she has decided that the criticisms of her Morning Show persona mean she must become a hand-me-down Bush propagandist, as opposed to an actual journalist who asks what are they called--oh yeah, real questions.

Hint Katie: They will never accept you. Fox just recently bit into you for being a single mother and having the gall to work. Ann Coulter likes to call you the "affable Eva Braun," if you've somehow forgotten. By enabling more of our troops to die in a war that was started by the very same shoddy reporting by you and your peers, you will only ensure that not only does the Right hate you, but so does EVERYONE ELSE.

Seriously, I have seen you do a very good job in the past on some important issues (cancer comes to mind). So can you do us all a favor, and stop sucking up to these warmongers and do your freakin' job?

FOX: Katie Couric Is A Bad Mom For Practicing Journalism and Not Staying Home Where It's Safe

In possibly the most craven example of concern trolling and journalistic assault I’ve ever seen, guest host Dagen McDowell led a discussion of whether Katie Couric is a bad, irresponsible mom for making the decision to go to Iraq to report on that news stuff that’s happening over there.

One guest for this discussion was Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America, which is (Surprise! Surprise!) a conservative Republican/Christian organization “with a rich 28-year history of helping our members across the country bring Biblical principles into all levels of public policy” while insuring, among other things, “that neither the United Nations nor any other international organization should have authority over the United States in any area.” So she’s obviously an authority on journalism. The other guest was Susan Estrich, a law professor. I assume FOX didn’t invite any experts on journalism because that discussion would be over too fast.

Among other clever insights, Crouse had this to say:

It’s a clear act of desperation. I find it very sad.

Here [Couric] is, going off to iraq, paying absolutely no attention to the fact that her children have already lost one parent, and here she is putting herself in harm’s way. We’ve already had more than 100 journalists die in Iraq, and I think it’s very sad to see Katie having her priorities so determined by her ambition rather than for her children’s welfare. I think it’s a warped perspective.

Won’t anyone PLEASE think of the children?!? The idea that Crouse is only speaking out to protect Couric’s kids and remind Couric (since she’s “paying absolutely no attention”) that her husband died in 1998 and that her death would make her kids parentless is so unbelievably insulting and repulsive that it makes me gag. Are the musings of this conservative whackjob into the inner thoughts and motivations of Katie Couric really news? What qualifies Crouse to talk about this other than the fact that she is a conservative Christian republican?
