<p><p>KBR, the largest US civilian contractor in Iraq, is being accused of covering up rape charges, overbilling the US government and exposing their employees to hazardous chemicals. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports on one family suing them for killing their son in a wrongful death.</p><p>Greg Mitchell has more <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/greg-mitchell/kbr-charged-with-homicide_b_112311.html">from HuffPo</a>:</p><p>I've written often here about my friend Cheryl Harris, whose son Ryan Maseth was electrocuted and died in Iraq. You remember: the military lied and told her he had carried an electrical appliance into the shower. I helped her trace a total of at least a dozen other electrocutions and she had been instrumental in getting Congress, and the Pentagon, to probe the issue -- and she finally testified before Democrats (and some Republicans) in Congress yesterday.</p> <p>She is also suing KBR, the contractors in charge, and two former KBR people also blew the whistle yesterday. Another mother, Larraine McGee, who lost a son in Iraq accused KBR of "homicide" yesterday.</p></p>

This tragedy caused my marriage to end only a month later. With little reason to stay in Utah, I pursued the opportunity of going to work for Halliburton, because I had gotten word that Halliburton was looking for people with expertise in water purification to operate their reverse osmosis water purification units (ROWPU). I had extensive experience with a wide range of water purification technologies, and I was attracted to the idea of providing a valuable service to our soldiers serving in Iraq. </span></p><p><span>At the time, I was very excited at the prospect of being an employee once again, doing great things with providing clean safe water to U.S. troops and seeing some exciting places around the world. This was before I learned anything about <a href="http://iraqforsale.org/">Halliburton and their business practices</a>.</span></p><p><span>If you recall, in late 2004 the war in Iraq was thought to be over after the declaration of "mission accomplished" by President George W. Bush. This impression was clearly wrong once I arrived, and I was sent to the base at Ar Ramadi. The talk around the water coolers was that the KBR camp there was getting hit on a regular schedule with rocket and mortar fire. This was a surprise to me since my recruiter had told me that I would be sent to the green zone in Baghdad. When I arrived in Ar Ramadi I was anxious to get to work right away. <p><p>What's it going to take for us to hold <a href="http://iraqforsale.org/">the Iraq War profiteers</a> accountable? The Bush administration's <a href="http://3trillion.org/">$3 trillion war</a> in Iraq has been the direct cause of our current recession, and yet private defense contractors <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/hotStocksNews/idUSN0246629520080502">continue to reap billions</a> in profits. I'm not even talking about KBR for the moment. That loathesome Cheney-backed Halliburton subsidiary has actually been the focus of a bit of media and Congressional attention recently (though not enough) for <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/12/kbr-water/">contaminating our troops' water supplies</a>, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/04/world/middleeast/04electrocute.html">ignoring electrical safety standards that led to troop casualties</a>, and <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/06/kbr-taxes-cheney/">dodging hundreds of millions in tax payments</a>. No, I'm talking about L-3, the second largest employer in the Iraq occupation behind KBR. </p><p>L-3 makes about $1 billion a year off of the outsourcing of intelligence gathering in Iraq. The U.S. government hired L-3 to work with the military in interrogating and running background checks on Iraqi prisoners and civilians. L-3 now employs approximately 7,000 translators and 300 intelligence experts in Iraq, and has grown to become the ninth largest defense contractor in the U.S and the sixth largest Iraq War profiteer. While this outsourcing alone is cause for alarm, it is how L-3 runs its company that is particularly egregious. <br /> </p></p>

<p> When I first met Ben Carter by telephone in January of 2006, he was somewhat of a lone voice shouting into an empty stadium. He had been working for <a href="http://www.kbr.com/">Kellogg, Brown, and Root (KBR)</a>—a Halliburton subsidiary that had billions of dollars worth of government contracts in Iraq—as a water contamination specialist. I was working with Brave New Films on a documentary (<a href="http://iraqforsale.org/">Iraq For Sale</a>) about war profiteering companies who used the war as a way to line their pockets with gads of tax-payer cash for such things a bag of washed laundry at $100 a pop, or $45 for a six pack of Coke.<br /><br /> The war had been outsourced and privatized, and the likes of KBR were not so privately robbing the country blind with cost-plus contracts. Based on this bright idea, the more a company spent, say, on that Hummer for the boss running the ice cream stand for the troops on leave in Kuwait, the more that company made. Or rather, when looked at from the public's side of the ledger, the more the taxpayer paid.</p>

<p><p>If they supported the troops any better, they'd be killing them.</p><blockquote><p><strong><a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/IRAQ_CONTAMINATED_WATER?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT">WASHINGTON (AP)</a> -- Dozens of U.S. troops in Iraq fell sick at bases using "unmonitored and potentially unsafe" water supplied by the military and a contractor once owned by Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, the Pentagon's internal watchdog says.</strong></p><p><strong>A report obtained by The Associated Press said soldiers experienced skin abscesses, cellulitis, skin infections, diarrhea and other illnesses after using discolored, smelly water for personal hygiene and laundry at five U.S. military sites in Iraq.</strong></p><p><strong>The Pentagon's inspector general found water quality problems between March 2004 and February 2006 at three sites run by contractor KBR Inc., and between January 2004 and December 2006 at two military-operated locations.</strong></p><p><strong>It was impossible to link the dirty water definitively to all the illnesses, according to the report. But it said KBR's water quality "was not maintained in accordance with field water sanitary standards" and the military-run sites "were not performing all required quality control tests."</strong></p></blockquote></p>

He is also going to have a heart scan," the official said.</strong></p><p><strong>"He should have gone to London for the checkup more than a month ago but he waited until after Eid (the Muslim Eid al-Adha feast). Now he has a good opportunity to go for the checkup."</strong></p><p><strong>State television showed Maliki, who has been in office since May 2006, boarding his private plane at Baghdad international airport. Not unlike <a href="../blog/20616-huckabee-s-former-aide-contradicts-him-on-rapist-s-release">Mike Huckabee, with his release-the-rapist</a> stance, the Nation of Dick chooses to penalize <a href="../blog/21070-victim-gang-rape-cover-up-by-u-s-halliburton-kbr">the victim</a>: </p><blockquote><p>When <strong>[Jamie Leigh] Jones went to work for KBR</strong> in Texas, and later for its subsidiary, Overseas Administrative Services, <strong>she signed contracts containing mandatory binding arbitration</strong> clauses, which <strong>required her to give up her right to sue the companies and any right to a jury trial</strong>. Instead, the contracts forced Jones to press her case through private arbitration, which she did in 2006. In that forum, <strong>the company that allegedly wronged her pays the arbitrator who is hearing the case. For that she can thank Dick Cheney</strong>.</p></blockquote><p>It's the end of the year. We, too, should thank Dick Cheney for the many things he's done <strike>for</strike> to this country in 2007. And what better way to say "thank you" than to impeach. But I'm veering off track: </p><blockquote><p><strong>At the time of the alleged attack on Jones, KBR was a subsidiary of Halliburton, the behemoth military-contracting and oil-technology firm</strong>. (KBR was sold off earlier this year.) So <strong>Jones is covered by the Halliburton dispute-resolution program</strong>, which was <strong>implemented when Cheney was Halliburton's CEO</strong>. The system bears the markings of <strong>Cheney's obsession with secrecy and executive power</strong>. <strong>On his watch, Halliburton, in late 1997, made it more difficult for its employees to sue the company for discrimination, sexual harassment, and other workplace-related issues.</strong></p></blockquote><p>That Dick. Always thinking of the little guy.<br /> </p><blockquote><p>It was a <strong>sign that secrecy</strong> is one of the reasons that <strong>Halliburton prefers arbitration.</strong> If its employees could sue the company in a regular court, <strong>reporters would have access to all the complaints and most of the documents in the cases</strong>. <strong>They could locate the plaintiffs and interview them</strong>. In effect, <strong>there would be some sunshine on Halliburton and KBR's corporate behavior.</strong> Instead, complaints made through <strong>private arbitration are virtually impossible to find and examine</strong> in any systematic way.</p></blockquote><p>Nonono. Silly me. It's just a big misunderstanding:</p><blockquote><p><strong>The company sold the new program as an employee perk</strong> that would create an "<strong>open door" policy</strong> for bringing grievances to management and as a forum for resolving disputes without expensive and lengthy litigation. In practice, <strong>it meant that anyone who had a legitimate civil-rights or personal-injury claim signed away his or her constitutional right to a jury trial</strong>. </p></blockquote><p>See? Dick was being his usual jolly, benevolent self offering his <strike>slaves</strike> employees "perks". He was simply being all perky and give-y. </p><blockquote><p>It's not too hard to see why Halliburton and KBR want to keep Jaime Leigh Jones in arbitration. If the allegations she has made are true, and her lawyers can prove it, <strong>her case could be worth many millions of dollars in a jury trial</strong>. It could also be both <strong>expensive and embarrassing</strong>, <strong>two things that Cheney clearly wanted to avoid</strong> a decade ago when <strong>he stacked the deck against his company's employees</strong>.</p></blockquote><p>Yes, Cheney has descended even further into the stench-filled, slimy sewage that pollutes his every pore. As if that were even possible. </p> </p>

<p><p>The rape of Jamie Leigh Jones by Halliburton/KBR employees is finally, after 2 years, making <a href="../blog/21070-victim-gang-rape-cover-up-by-u-s-halliburton-kbr">news</a>.</p><p><a href="http://writechic.wordpress.com/">She</a> was interviewed last night by Dan Abrams on <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/22304186#22304186">MSNBC</a>.</p><p>I'm quoting her from memory since I'm having a tough time finding a transcript of the interview, but this sentence (paraphrased) stands out in my mind:</p><blockquote><p><strong>"Being raped and giving the rape kit to KBR was like being raped in a mall and giving the rape kit to a mall security guard" </strong></p></blockquote><p>Representative Ted Poe (R-TX) has called for Congressional Hearings which begin Wednesday, December 18, 2007 at 10:15 a.m. EST. </p><p>Time for some justice...if there is such a thing in this country any more.</p></p>

<p>A young American woman in Iraq allegedly had to be rescued by the State Department after she was held in a shipping container without food or water for 24 hours after reporting that she was drugged and gang raped. The victim was able to get her hands on a phone and called her father in Texas who then contacted Republican Congressman Ted Poe who contacted the State Department.</p>

<p><p><a href="http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=3977702">This</a> is unbelievable:</p><blockquote><p><strong>A Houston, Texas woman says she was gang-raped by Halliburton/KBR coworkers in Baghdad, and the company and the U.S. government are covering up the incident.</strong> </p><p>Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after <strong>she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job.</strong> </p><p>"<strong>Don't plan on working back in Iraq.</strong> There won't be a position here, and there won't be a position in Houston," Jones says she was told. </p></blockquote><p>Oh, it gets worse:</p><blockquote><p>In a <strong>lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR</strong>, Jones says she was <strong>held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by KBR</strong>, which posted armed security guards outside her door, who would not let her leave. </p></blockquote><p>She got help:</p><blockquote><p> Finally, Jones says, she convinced a <strong>sympathetic guard to loan her a cell phone</strong> so she could call her father in Texas. </p></blockquote><p>KBR covered their tracks:</p><blockquote><p> According to her lawsuit, <strong>Jones was raped by "several attackers who first drugged her, then repeatedly raped and injured her</strong>, both physically and emotionally." </p><p>Jones told ABCNews.com that an examination by <strong>Army doctors showed she had been raped "both vaginally and anally," but that the rape kit disappeared after it was handed over to KBR security officers.</strong> </p></blockquote><p>Remember that whole <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071205/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/blackwater_iraq">Blackwater loophole</a>?</p><blockquote><p><strong> Over two years later, the Justice Department has brought no criminal charges</strong> in the matter. In fact, ABC News could not confirm any federal agency was investigating the case. </p><p>Legal experts say Jones' alleged assailants will likely never face a judge and jury, due to an <strong>enormous loophole that has effectively left contractors in Iraq beyond the reach of United States law.</strong> </p></blockquote><p>More frustration:</p><blockquote><p>Congressman Poe says <strong>neither the departments of State nor Justice will give him answers on the status of the Jones investigation. </strong></p></blockquote><p>This is outrageous.
