TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "What do you think of Sen. Biden's plan for Iraq where he—"

JOHN MCCAIN: "Wants to divide them into three countries? I think they are Iraqis first. I notice that as things have gotten in Iraq that that theory has succeeded. [...] One: the Turks would never allow an independent Kurdistan. [...] people live in neighborhoods next to each other. Sunnis and Shiite--some of them are married to each other. I think it's very difficult to achieve that. I think the Iraqi government--very disappointed--but it's starting to show a little progress."

For more: linktv.org
In late May of 2007 Peter Scarlet, artistic director of the Tribeca Film Festival and our host and co-curator for CINEMONDO, traveled to the Kurdish-held area of Northern Iraq and shot an interview with Iranian Kurd filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi. Bahman Ghobadi first came to the movie world's attention in 2000, when his first feature film, "A Time for Drunken Horses," won the prize for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was the first Kurdish language movie ever to gain worldwide attention.

Since then Ghobadi has made three more features, all in the Kurdish language. His most recent, "Half Moon," is currently banned in Iran though it has been shown in festivals around the world. Link TV's 17-minute profile of Ghobadi provides a fascinating introduction to the work of a filmmaker who has riveted audiences around the world with his courageous and deeply affecting films about Kurdish life on the Iranian-Iraqi border.

The Peshmerga are hailed by most Kurds in Iraq as the military force protecting the Kurdish people.

The word Peshmerga literally means "ready to die". It alludes to the famed warrior spirit of the Kurdish fighters.

Most Peshmerga are loyal to either one of Iraq's two main Kurdish political parties - the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) or the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

The KDP, led by Massoud Barzani, and the PUK, led by Jalal Talabani, each have about 25,000 to 30,000 fighters.

These fighters have become the unofficial standing army of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

But critics - some within the Kurdish community itself - have accused certain Peshmerga commanders of abusing their military power, exploiting political contacts and amassing enormous personal wealth.

Human rights organizations, as well as independent Kurdish figures, have made allegations that the Peshmerga run prisons in which fellow Kurds, Arabs and Turkmen are routinely tortured.

Even Barham Saleh, deputy prime minister of Iraq and a Kurd himself, admitted torture was used in Kurdish prisons - an acknowledgement that was not welcomed by his boss, Jalal Talabani, Iraq's president.

The military force, represented by the Peshmerga, has taken on additional significance in the light of the ongoing conflict in the region between Turkey and the fighters of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The Peshmerga are staying out of the conflict, avoiding any confrontation with Turkish troops and not coming to the support of the PKK.

This week, Inside Iraq will examine the role played by the Peshmerga and will investigate the charges of corruption and torture.

Our guests this week are:

Falah Mustafa Bakir, minister and head of the Department of Foreign Relations and Freshta Raper, spokesperson for the Kurdistan National Congress.

Turkey's brief invasion of Kurdish Iraq was reported in-depth by Turkish and
Kurdish TV. The rest of the world's media was equally interested in how an
American visitor - Secretary of State Condi Rice - reacted to the incursion.
Reports claimed that the U.S. helped the Turks in their bombing campaign.
But Secretary Rice managed to sidestep the question.

Once upon a time there was a man named Ray Hunt who had a lot of money. He was a Texas oil man. But he was no ordinary Texas oil man, oh no. He gave some of his a-lot-of-money to a powerful dim bulb named George.

Because of this, Dim Bulb George liked Oil Man Ray. He liked him enough to let him sit on the Very Important National Petroleum Council (an industry advisory board to the secretary of energy) and the president’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (whose members the president selects to advise him “concerning the quality and adequacy of intelligence collection, of analysis and estimates, of counterintelligence, and of other intelligence activities” according to the White House web site).

One day, Oil Man Ray did something very unusual. He and his Very Important Hunt Oil Corporation signed a controversial deal with Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government without Dim Bulb George's permission. Uh oh!

Baghdad got angry, and Dim Bulb George was vexed because this wasn't part of the Big and Very Important Iraq Plan.

And now, guess what, boys and girls! It turns out that Big Oil Ray had checked with the U.S. State Department after all! Surprise! I guess they just forgot to tell us that part.

Congressman Dennis (Kucinich) is not a happy Congressman after hearing that story! He's calling for an investigation! Isn't that exciting?

Congressman Ed (Markey) is not happy either. He's demanding answers from Designer Clothes Condi! She runs the Very Important State Department. Here's what Congressman Ed asked:

“Are you concerned that the involvement of such a high-level adviser to the president in this contract will create the impression that the negation between Hunt and the Kurdish government was sanctioned by you, or, indeed, by the president himself?”

I bet Designer Clothes Condi is mighty worried, don't you?

There is no end to this story yet, kids. So, they all lived...

_______________ ever after.

Not The End

Author Ian Klaus talks about using American pop culture to connect with Kurdish students in an excerpt from his book, "Elvis is Titanic: Classroom Tales from the Other Iraq."

-----

Ian Klaus delivers "Elvis is Titanic: Classroom Tales from the Other Iraq."

In the spring of 2005, Ian Klaus, a twenty-six-year-old Rhodes Scholar, traveled eight hours from Turkey, via broken-down taxi and armed convoy, to reach Salahaddin University in Arbil, the largest city in Iraqi Kurdistan. ELVIS IS TITANIC is the poignant, funny, and uplifting story of the semester he spent there teaching US history and English in the thick of the war for hearts and minds.

Inspired by the volunteerism of so many young Americans after 9/11, Klaus exchanges the abstraction of duty for an intimate involvement with individual lives. Among the Kurds, a perennially oppressed but seemingly indomitable people, he encounters both openhearted welcome and resentful suspicion -- and soon learns firsthand how far trust can go. With assignments ranging from Elvis to Ellington, from the mysteries of baseball to de Tocqueville, from Michael Jackson to Thomas Friedman, Klaus strives to illuminate the American way for students initially far more attuned to our pop culture than our national ideals. These efforts -- recounted in unforgettable vignettes full of hope and discovery -- also occasion his own reexamination of truths we hold to be self-evident, as well as the less exalted cultural assumptions we have presumed to export to the rest of the world. - Cody's Books

Ian Klaus, who now lives in New York City, wrote for publications across the United States while he was in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in history at Harvard.
