<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "Wants to divide them into three countries? I think they are Iraqis first. I notice that as things have gotten in Iraq that that theory has succeeded. [...] One: the Turks would never allow an independent Kurdistan. [...] people live in neighborhoods next to each other. Sunnis and Shiite--some of them are married to each other. I think it's very difficult to achieve that. I think the Iraqi government--very disappointed--but it's starting to show a little progress."</p>

<p>They are trying to modernize to attract voters. But the region has a history of secular politics that some analysts say Islamist politicians will find hard to break.</p>
<p>In stark contrast to much of Iraq, the country's Kurdish north is relatively peaceful.

<br />For most of the past 10 years, two secular parties have shared power.

<p>The Turkish incursion into northern Iraq is entering its sixth day amid claims and counter-claims of violence. The Turkish military says it's killed more than 150 Kurdish rebels since crossing the border on Thurday.
<br />But the PKK rejects the casualty figures and has warned Turkey it has entered a conflict it cannot win. Many of Turkey's Kurds are also growing increasingly frustrated.
<br />Our correspondent, Hoda Abdel Hamid, went to the southeastern town of Diyarbakir where she found growing support for the PKK.
<br />But first, James Bays is on the Iraqi side of the border where he was given exclusive access to a town caught in the middle of the conflict.</p>

<p>General Sultan Hashem, a former Iraqi defence minister, along with Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as "Chemical Ali", are awaiting execution for their roles in the Anfal military campaign that killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Kurds in 1988.</p>
<p>However, Hashem was assured by senior US military officials that his life would be spared.</p>
<p>Al Jazeera's James Bays reports.</p>
