Author and former Scientologist Skip Press recalls how he was expelled (declared a suppressive person) from the Scientology organization for refusing to join the organization's labor force. This a major facet of what the documentary The Ides of March will be exploring. This untouched, unedited footage was uploaded for public edification and education and can be used for non-profit purposes. Enjoy.

But she is also an incredibly caring woman who taught me how to be good and encouraged me to be independent and strong in my own way. I've always admired her and respected her. And as a result, I am inspired by others who have those characteristics, especially women.

So, when it was arranged that Bonnie Raitt and Dolores Huerta – two people who are the epitome of strong women – would appear together in This Brave Nation, I immediately called my mom to tell her. It just so happened Momma Sprinkle is a huge fan of Bonnie’s and always respected Dolores for her incredible work (while raising eleven children). And since we’re all continuously looking for parental approval, I was thrilled that my mom was thrilled.

Dolores Huerta was the co-founder of the United Farm Workers (with Cesar Chavez). She is a woman who stood up for thousands of migrant laborers and fought for years to help protect their families, all while creating a life for her own family that could certainly be described as “different.” Bonnie Raitt is, of course, the multi-platinum selling musician, but she is also a tireless crusader protecting the environment, as well looking after the lives of some of the talented musicians who mentored her.

This week’s This Brave Nation with Strong, Talented, Independent women. You won't want to miss it.

Futurist author Paul Saffo predicts a gradual shift to a robot-based economy for the Japan and the United States, and discusses possible impacts for the remaining human workforce.

-----

Paul Saffo discusses Embracing Uncertainty: Connecting Policy to Long-Range Forecasting.

A movie star as governor? No way! Planes hitting skyscrapers? The stuff of horror films! Forecasters struggle to anticipate an ever-stranger geopolitical reality. In this moment of unprecedented uncertainty and change, says Saffo, it is tempting to conclude that forecasting is as dangerous as it is futile.

In fact, connecting short-term policy to long-range forecasting is surprisingly easy - and absolutely crucial to meeting the challenges before us. All it takes is a simple shift in perspective and a few common-sense heuristics.

Saffo is a legendary technology forecaster, with over two decades of experience exploring long-term technological change and its impact on business and society - The Commonwealth Club of California

Paul Saffo is a forecaster and strategist with over two decades experience exploring long-term technological change and its practical impact on business and society. Paul is Chairman of the Samsung Science Board, and serves on a variety of other boards and advisory panels, including the Stanford Advisory Council on Science, Technology and Society, and the Long Now Foundation, as well as the boards of several public and pre-public companies located the United States and abroad. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and has served as an advisor and Forum Fellow to the World Economic Forum, which in the late 1990s named Paul one of its "100 Global Leaders For Tomorrow."

Paul currently serves on the Board of the Institute for the Future and the Long Now Foundation. He is also the Chairman of Samsung Science Advisory Board.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Thomas Sowell argues that reports of stagnation among American incomes over the last several decades are an economic and political myth.

-----

Peter Robinson speaks with Thomas Sowell about his new book Economic Facts and Fallacies in which Sowell exposes some of the most popular fallacies about economic issues.

Sowell takes on the conventional thinking on a wide swath of America's economic life, from male-female economic differences to income stagnation, executive pay, and social mobility to economics of higher education. In all cases he demonstrates how economics relates to the social issues that deeply affect our country - Hoover Institution

Thomas Sowell is an American economist, political writer, and commentator. He is currently a senior fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 1990, he won the Francis Boyer Award, presented by the American Enterprise Institute. In 2002 he was awarded the National Humanities Medal for prolific scholarship melding history, economics, and political science.

97 years ago, a fire broke out in the upper floors of New York's Triangle Shirtwaist Company that killed 146 workers, mostly women. It was one of the worst disasters since the start of the Industrial Revolution, underscoring the need for workers' rights.

Though unions like the International Ladies Garment Workers were just gaining steam, the "laws" protecting garment workers were so poorly enforced that Triangle got away with having doors that only opened inward, doors they locked in order to keep tabs on their employees. And so, when the fire struck, many of the those who died were burned alive or forced to leap to their own deaths.

Tragically, there are still sweatshops today in our country that fail to provide adequate working conditions for their laborers. Many employ illegal immigrants who are underpaid and grossly overworked. According to Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, a recent U.S. Department of Labor study found that 98% of Los Angeles garment factories have health and safety violations "serious enough to lead to severe injuries or death."

Let's remember the Triangle fire by not allowing it to repeat. The union coalition UNITE HERE! offers the chance learn more and take action.
