What does history suggest would be the best public policy for racial minorities in the 21st century?</p> <p>Bruce Bartlett, a former Reagan administration economist with a provocative new book, and Casey Lartigue, coeditor of Educational Freedom in Urban America and a controversial former XM 169 talk show host, will discuss these questions - Cato Institute</p> <p>Casey Lartigue is a former policy analyst with Cato's Center for Educational Freedom. His research expertise includes school choice, teacher quality and minority education. The DREAM Act would enable states to grant in-state tuition to these hardworking immigrant students, making higher education (and eventually citizenship) a real possibility. </p><p>We need to put pressure on all three presidential candidates to commit to securing America&#39;s future by enacting the federal DREAM Act in their first 100 days of office. In fact that is true. The voter surge has been attributed to younger voters showing up for Barack Obama that is only partially true.</p><p>In fact now that the dust is settling it is obvious that a sizable part of the voter surge has come from Latino voters. Latino voter turnout is double the number than that of 2004. This remarkable achievement has Latino community organizers smiling but for the most part the media right, left, and mainstream have been largely silent about it.</p><p>The media, comfortable with ignoring Latino voters, has for the first time paid some attention to this critical mobile voting block. But credit for the voter &ldquo;surge&rdquo; has been totally given to Obama even though Latinos have been largely Clinton voters. This even though Obama supporters like Cong. But given the historical reality of this country, it&#39;s inevitable, at least for the time being. </p></p> </div> http://bravenewfilms.org/blog/28202-of-am-rica-clinton-s-latino-advantage-decreases-obama-surges 2008-02-07T12:20:53Z jessehaff <div class="post_content"> <p><p>Robert Lovato from <a href="http://ofamerica.wordpress.com/2008/02/06/clintons-latino-advantage-decreases-obama-surges-as-latinos-vote-beyond-black-and-white/">Of Am&eacute;rica</a> provides some interesting insight into the Latino vote shifting from Clinton to Obama as Latinos vote beyond black and white:</p><blockquote><p>Asked on Super Duper Tuesday to choose between a black candidate, Barack Obama, and a white candidate, Hillary Clinton, Latinos chose both -and neither.</p> <p>In a Democratic race in which the issue of race has played a definitive role, racially fluid and ambiguous Latinos delivered a loud and historic message to the candidates and pundits and to the country as a whole: the black-white electorate of yesteryear is dead.</p> <p>Preliminary results of the most intense primary in recent memory indicate that predictions of a monolithic Latino &ldquo;firewall&rdquo; for Clinton have fallen short. The candidates split key Latino states in different parts of the country. Clinton won states like New York and New Jersey while Obama won states like Colorado and Illinois. Exit poll results also demolished widely-held notions that Latinos are unwilling to support a black candidate. Obama succeeded in dropping Clinton&rsquo;s Latino advantage from 4-1 (68% to 17% according to a CNN poll conducted last week) to 3-2 last night. And in almost every Latino-heavy state that voted Super Tuesday, Obama received more than the 26 percent of the Latino vote he got in Nevada just 2 weeks ago.</p> <p>Analysis of Latino voting patterns indicates that Latinos did not, as predicted, march monolithically into the voting booths to vote racially black or white.
