The federal government is accepting re-applications from a certain category of undocumented immigrants who applied for a 1986 amnesty program but were denied or never received a response to their request.

It is thought that about 10,000 may qualify, said Sharon Rummery, a Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman in the San Francisco regional office.

Note: I know DREAMers are certainly not eligible since we were too young or not even born but our parents might be eligible for this.

Here are more details on the program:

Among the requirements for reapplying is proof of having entered the country legally on a temporary visa before 1982 and overstaying it.
Applicants must have no criminal history and had to have applied between May 5, 1987, and May 4, 1988.

Those who were wrongly rejected and who meet the qualifications will have to pay $585 to reapply. Those who never applied but who may still qualify will have to pay $1,130.

Though legalization is not guaranteed, the government cannot deport those who apply even if their applications are declined.

The filing period beings on Feb 1 and will run for a year.

Mitt Romney
Town Hall
Dubuque, IA 11/30/07

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: The prohibition is not working.

MITT ROMNEY: Yeah.

QUESTIONER: And our drug war is not working; is there something that we should do anything about to affect change?

MITT ROMNEY: Yeah, whats the right way to win the war against drugs? And thats, well, Ross Perot used to say, Well, Im all ears. Well, we all have a lot of learning to do. And finding ways to help young people understand the perils of, of starting on drugs, in my view, is a very critical effort on the part of this country. What are the kinds of things we can do? Well, one of course, is that we can do a better job of, if you will, marketing, talking to our kids early in their life about the impact of drugs. I have listened to a former secretary of state and he said, you know, Id take a lot of the money were spending in other nations to stop the production of crops and use that here to, to advertise to our kids and to communicate to our kids. You know, I think we need to talk to our kids, at least in a better way. That was something he suggested. But I, I know that we can sell our kids Coca-Cola and Levis and Pepsi and we can even convince them to wear their pants down low and, I mean, there are amazing things that American kidsll do [laughter]. But were going to have to teach our kids about the perils and the serious, the serious impact in life in having taken a wrong course with regards to drugs. Now let me mention something else which was, which was kind of surprising to me. Did you see the survey about the impact on families and having dinner with your kids and drugs? I see a couple of heads nodding. It really surprised me. There was a survey done, a study done, and they divided families in America in two groups: those families who have dinner together five times a week or more, now I think dinner together five times a week or more was kind of a surrogate for the mom and dad are involved in the life of their children, that was one group, the other group were families that didnt have dinner together on a regular basis, like that. And they found that the kids in homes where moms and dads were heavily involved with regular dinners like that, the kids . . . were 1/6th as likely to try drugs . . . I think if you step back, youll recognize that a lot of the social challenges we have in our society relate to the failure of the home and strengthening the home with moms and dads and values and churches and service groups, that has, long term, the biggest possible impact in trying to reduce things like drugs . . . so Ill market to our kids, Ill strengthen our families, well also go around the world and try and stop people from developing the crops that they bring in to our country, well try and stop them at the border. I will not legalize however, marijuana or other drugs. I think theyre gateway drugs that, that draw our kids into a pathway of drug use. But its an extraordinary priority for this country and me personally. Remember, Nancy Reagan made this her passion as first lady and it made a difference and well do it again. Thank you.

Clever new video from the Drug Policy Alliance about a pill many politicans are addicted to.

Tell Congress it is time for a new bottom line in U.S. drug policy, one that focuses on reducing the problems associated with both drugs *and* the war on drugs.
