If you want a bigger government, more of your individual rights taking away from you, lose the war on terror, socialized society, and higher taxes then vote for me. I change my position like the wind. I say the surge won't work, then I say the surge work. When I speak without a prepared speech or teleprompter i sound like a baboon on steroids. It;'s time to get rid of all the liberal democrats in office. They want us to suffer so we depend on the government. They are against drilling for oil because they want the gas prices to rise so we take public funded transportation. Vote them out and let's get some conservatives in office before it's too late.

Stanford political science professor Larry Diamond discusses the Bush Administration's approach to democracy promotion in the Middle East, and examines barriers to further democratic reforms in the region.

-----

Larry Diamond discusses the recession of democracy and its role in developing countries. Diamond contends that although more than half of all countries are now democracies, recent efforts to promote democracy around the world have faltered. These stumbles have constituted, Diamond maintains, a very serious threat to freedom.

In a bold vision for the future, Diamond explains that the desire for democracy runs deep, even in very poor countries, and proposes that entrenched regimes like Iran and China could become democracies within a generation - The Commonwealth Club of California

Larry Diamond is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor by courtesy of political science and sociology at Stanford University. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Democracy and co-director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies of the National Endowment for Democracy.

He has written and edited numerous articles and books on democracy in developing countries and the problems of development and corruption, particularly in Africa and Asia. Dr. Diamond has also served as a consultant to the U.S. Agency for International Development and co-authored its recent report, Foreign Aid in the National Interest.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist argues that the central unifying idea of the conservative movement is the belief that government should stay out of citizen's lives as much as possible.

-----

On May 15th, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform discussed his new book, Leave Us Alone: Getting the Government's Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives, and entertained questions from an audience at the New America Foundation.

Norquist began by analyzing the political landscape of American politics, dividing it into two inimically opposed coalitions: the "Takings Coalition," comprised of groups with a shared interest in feeding upon the earnings and wealth of others, and the "Leave Us Alone Coalition," composed of those with a common interest in keeping the government out of their lives.

While the components of each coalition contain diverse viewpoints on many issues, all are motivated to cooperate and vote by shared interest in one area: the degree to which a government should interact with the social and financial autonomy of its citizens.

The contrast between these two coalitions represents the ideological divide that will shape American domestic policy for the next several generations, according to Norquist. Their balance of power will decide the direction that American policy moves toward for the next generation.

Norquist went on to identify the trends that would alter this balance in the future, including differing fertility rates, the decline of hunting, and the expansion of stock ownership. He also discussed important legislative priorities for the "Leave Us Alone Coalition," such as portable health savings plans and individually mandated savings accounts - New America Foundation

Mr. Norquist is president of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), a coalition of taxpayer groups, individuals and businesses opposed to higher taxes at both the federal, state, and local levels.

ATR organizes the TAXPAYER PROTECTION PLEDGE, which asks all candidates for federal and state office to commit themselves in writing to oppose all tax increases. To date, President George W. Bush, 193 House members, and 41 Senators have taken the pledge. On the state level, 7 governors and 1,221 state legislators have taken the pledge.

Mr. Norquist is author of the book Leave Us Alone -- Getting the Government's Hands Off Our Money, Our Guns, Our Lives. The book is an optimistic look at how the conservative movement can and will grow during the next 25 years.

-----

As president of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, Gonzalez helped to install rank-choice voting and raise the San Francisco minimum wage.

In 2003, he ran for San Francisco mayor in a controversial election, just barely losing to Gavin Newsom - The Commonwealth Club of California

In 2000 he was elected to the 11-member San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which supervises a city with a budget of $6 billion.

He is best known for having led the effort to implement Instant Run-off Voting, also known as Rank Choice Voting, in San Francisco, where it has been successfully implemented to obtain a majority outcome without the need for costly run-off elections. Matt Gonzalez is a 2008 Vice Presidential Candidate running with Ralph Nader.

Salon.com technology columnist Farhad Manjoo examines the phenomenon of "selective exposure" - our predisposition to seek out ideas that re-enforce existing beliefs - in today's media, using the 2004 Presidential election's "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" as an example.

-----

Salon.com staff writer Farhad Manjoo talks about his new book, True Enough: Learning To Live in a Post-Fact Society, which contends the Internet promotes belief over fact.

Perhaps countering this view is Mike Godwin, formerly counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and now general counsel for the Wikimedia Foundation, and Zo (Connie) Spencer, brilliant, witty, and fearless blogger (www.humorlessbitch.com) on all things political, personal, and involving high-tech.

As usual, everyone is invited to participate in the discussion - The Hillside Club Cybersalon

Farhad Manjoo is an author and a staff writer for Salon.com.
Manjoo graduated from Cornell University in 2000. While there, he wrote for and then served as editor-in-chief of the Cornell Daily Sun student newspaper. Before taking a staff position at Salon.com, he wrote for Wired News. Manjoo frequently writes on new media, politics and controversies in journalism.

Manjoo is the author of the book True Enough: Learning to Live in a Post-Fact Society, published in March, 2008.

Columnist Eric Alterman discusses negative perceptions of the term "liberal" as it is used in American politics, in a conversation with FORA.tv founder and CEO Brian Gruber.

-----

Liberal columinst, blogger and author Eric Alterman sits down for an interview with FORA.tv Founder and CEO Brian Gruber to discuss his most recent book Why We're Liberals, the meaning of liberalism, and the state of politics in the United States.

Eric Alterman is distinguished professor of English at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and professor of journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, as well as the liberal columnist for The Nation and Altercation blogger for Media Matters for America(formerly at MSNBC.com) in Washington, DC, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC, where he writes and edits the "Think Again" column, a senior fellow (since 1985) at the World Policy Institute at The New School in New York, and a history consultant to HBO Films.

Alterman is the author of seven books, including the national bestsellers, What Liberal Media? The Truth About Bias and the News (2003, 2004), and The Book on Bush: How George W. (Mis)leads America (with Mark Green, 2004).

The others include: When Presidents Lie: A History of Official Deception and its Consequences, (2004, 2005). His Sound & Fury: The Making of the Punditocracy (1992, 2000), won the 1992 George Orwell Award and his It Ain't No Sin to be Glad You're Alive: The Promise of Bruce Springsteen (1999, 2001), won the 1999 Stephen Crane Literary Award, and Who Speaks for America? Why Democracy Matters in Foreign Policy, (1998).

His newest book is Why We're Liberals: A Political Handbook to Post-Bush America, (2008).

Brian Gruber is Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of FORA.tv.

Gruber has twenty years experience successfully building and marketing media enterprises. As the senior marketing officer for a range of respected media institutions, he has managed billion dollar revenue budgets and large and small marketing teams. As the first marketing director for C-SPAN, he built its affiliate sales and marketing organization, launching C-SPAN II with the largest subscriber base ever for a cable network at launch. As director of marketing for News Corp's FOXTEL, he helped build the most successful cable television brand in Australia, going from number three to number one in cable subscriptions, brand equity and consumer awareness. As the head of marketing of the largest urban divisions of 3 top ten cable companies (MSO's), he turned flat or negative subscriber growth into substantial gains. And as president of g/media and Principals.com, he has helped more than twenty new media companies develop brands, marketing strategies, and consumer products.

He also acted as the media advisor and new media producer for the World Affairs Council of Northern California, the nation's most prolific presenter of quality world affairs events.

Over the past few weeks, I have engaged in debates with concerned liberals over the DREAM Act, and I have come out of these shocked and betrayed. These are the people I usually stand shoulder to shoulder with at an anti-war or pro-choice rally, and help bail out of jail.

The conversation usually starts with misconceived notions of DREAMers as "illegals" who want a free ride in college and who don't even pay taxes. When I step in to note how my parents did in fact pay thousands in taxes and that we paid my way through graduate school (without taking loans), I am accused of either fabrication or privilege. "You should quit feeling disempowered" is the comment levied at me last week, and I knew I had to step back from the discussion at that point because this person was knowingly or unknowingly scapegoating and I was not about to share the levels of disempowerment that I face in American society.

New York Times Op-Ed columnist Anthony Lewis criticizes use of the term "activist judges."

-----

The First Amendment: Defending Thought That We Hate with Anthony Lewis.

The First Amendment ensures that all Americans have the right to free speech, but it was only in the 20th century that the Supreme Court began to consistently enforce this basic freedom. A renowned author and literary critic, Lewis will explore how the First Amendment came to represent what it does today, taking a close look at how the courts, public opinion and the political will of the time have influenced its significance over the course of our country's development - The Commonwealth Club of California

Anthony Lewis, twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is a columnist for The New York Times. His column, which appears on the Op-Ed page, is called Abroad at Home. Residing in Boston, he travels widely in this country and abroad. Prior to becoming a columnist he was based in Washington, D.C., covering the Supreme Court, and in London as its bureau chief.
