Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, is to make an historic first visit to Libya on Friday, September 5, 2008.

Her visit will be the first by a US secretary of state to Libya since 1953.

Libya was on the state department list of state sponsors of terrorism until 2006, when it abandoned weapons of mass destruction and renounced terrorism.

Earlier this month, Libya agreed a compensation deal for families of the victims of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.

The deal paved the way for Rice's visit to what was once considered a pariah state. Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, was once described by the late President Ronald Reagan as a "mad dog".

We ask what's changed for both countries - and why? And who stands to benefit the most as the money pours in?

Part 3 - Baha Kikhia (2:07)

In Part 3 Deborah briefly tells the story of Baha Kikhia whose husband Mansour was the Libyan Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the United Nations. Mansour eventually resigned from his posts in protest of Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi's human rights violations. The couple then started a human rights organization for the Libyan people. Three years later Mansour was kidnapped in Cairo, Egypt.

Baha's subsequent search for her husband eventually led her to a surreal meeting in the middle of the Libyan desert with Gadhafi (excerpted from page 115 of "Unveiled"):

"You know, I love Mansour very much," Gadhafi said.
"Me, too," Baha answered again. They laughed despite her tears.
"You know what I think? I think it was the CIA that took him. Mansour wasn't the opposition. He was my friend."
"No, let's speak honestly. We know he was a leader in the opposition, but there is nothing wrong with that. Opposition means, they disagree with your thoughts. It means being against certain ideas, not against you, there is nothing wrong with that. He always said you were his friend, but he disagrees with you. Remember, Mansour didn't like to fight with anyone."
Despite Baha's heroic efforts Mansour was never found. The CIA would eventually give Baha a piece of paper with two lines written on it saying that her husband was executed but she refuses to accept it as valid.

While thousands of African risk their lives crossing to Europe every year, many from other parts of the continent stay on in North Africa because they've simply run out of money.

In Libya, undocumented migrants scratch out a living doing the jobs nobody else wants to do.

Amr El Kahky, in Tripoli, reports now on the migrants who got stuck on the road to a better life.

A stunning new report from UltimateJohnMcCain.com connects the dots between McCain and the terrorist Libyan regime of Muammar Gaddafi. According to the report, McCain's newest media adviser is Mike Hudome, who recently took over for Mark McKinnon when McKinnon decided he didn't want to run against Obama. Hudome is married to Randa Fahmy Hudome, a lobbyist who "began working for the Gaddafi government at a time when it was officially designated by the U.S. State Department as a state sponsor of terrorism."

During Bush's first term, Fahmy Hudome served as international policy adviser to then-Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham. In May of 2004, she became a member of the department's external advisory board and got a $1.47 million consulting agreement with the Libyan government to "strengthen Libyan interests." This conflict of interest only gets uglier, as Fahmy Hudome became instrumental in drumming up Arab-American support for Bush's reelection bid.

Conveniently, Bush suspended most sanctions against Libya in April 2004, just before Fahmy Hudome's appointment to the Energy Department's advisory board. And the administration was then compelled to remove Fahmy Hudome in July of the following year, whenfamilies of Lockerbie bombing victims and government watchdog groups both cried foul. As UltimateJohnMcCain reminds us, the 1988 Libyan bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, killed 270 people was the largest terrorist attack on Americans prior to 9/11.

Bill Kristol posits, as many on the right have, that our invasion of Iraq is what caused Iran to stop its nuclear weapons program.

Let me count the ways this is stupid. First of all, if anything, Iran would have determined, as North Korea did at the time, that nukes were necessary to defend themselves and beefed up their program instead of drawing down.

Not having WMD worked out just swell for Iraq, right?

Second, diplomacy, that thing that Bill Clinton and yes George H.W. Bush practiced, is what brought North Korea back to the table and eventually convinced Libya to give up their weapons program. Not the fear of our attacking them and failing as miserably as The Decider has in Iraq.

Here is Think Progress on this silly right-wing notion:

Libya did not give up its nuclear weapons program in 2003 because of the Iraq war. As Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Joseph Cirincione noted, negotiations with Libya stretched "over three administrations," resulting in a deal that "cost little, caused no deaths, and was 100 percent effective." At the time, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair called the news a "victory for diplomacy."

Conservatives think they're entitled to their own opinions and facts. It is why this administration and six years of a Republican Congress failed at literally everything.

Well, except increasing the demand for hookers and raising gas prices while whoring themselves out to Big Oil.....

Six medical staff, sentenced to death in Libya for infecting more than 400 children with the HIV virus will hear the results of their final appeal on Wednesday.
