Morris P. Fiorina is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Wendt Family Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. Formerly he was the Frank Thompson Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he taught from 1982-1998. From 1972-1982 he taught at the California Institute of Technology.
Professor Fiorina's research focuses on legislative and electoral processes with particular emphasis on the ways in which political institutions and procedures facilitate or distort the representation of citizen preferences.

He has just published Culture War: The Myth of a Polarized America with Samuel J. Abrams and Jeremy C. Pope (Pearson Longman, 2004).

Close to 300 planets outside our solar system have already been discovered. What if we find earth's twin?

The two leading planet hunters Didier Queloz, University of Geneva, and Debra Fischer, San Francisco State University, will talk about their search for planets outside our solar system (exoplanets) and the possibility of finding an earth-like planet, with liquid water on the surface.

They discuss ideas on what such a planet would look like, what would grow, and what kind of life could exist.

Lynette Cook, well-known portraitist of planets, will envision the outcome of this discussion through painting the imagined surface of one of the most recent discoveries: Gliese 581 c - Swissnex San Francisco

Debra Fischer is a professor of astronomy at San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley.

Fischer has co-authored over 80 papers on dwarf and sub-stellar mass objects in the galactic neighborhood, including many on extrasolar planets. She is also a member of the planet search team led by Geoffrey Marcy looking for extrasolar planets.

A letter to a friend on his birthday

Happy Birthday. In this new year - I ask you to create the vision for what you want this year to be - for yourself, for those you love and for the world. It will affect everything you choose to do. Every day. Every action I take is reflection of what I want my world to be.

In this new year - be brave. Speak up against the wrongs you encounter. Neutrality gives voice to the oppressor, never the oppressed. Silence give a platform to the tormentor, never the tormented. Silence in the company of judgment justifies the act.

Be stronger than your fear or those who perpetrate fear. Investing in worry brings the subject of your fear into reality. Worrying is like praying for what you don't want.

We get to choose between love and fear every day - every moment. That's all there is. EVERYTHING comes from one of those two things. And we get to choose. We are creatures of free will.

Love knows no separation, no division, no hierarchy. Love sees us all as one.

There are those who will not agree. There are those who think that bigger bank accounts will stave off the demons. Bigger locks on our doors will protect us from the demons. And bigger guns will keep the demons out. When, in reality, fear of the demons is the demon.

There is nothing wrong with having money or being cautious or protecting ourselves - but when it is a solution to fear, it will never be enough.

So this year, motivate yourself to act out of what you desire, not what you are afraid of. In this new year, invest in how you want to feel, rather than in getting the things you think will make you feel good after you've gotten them.

If you want to diet, do it because it feels right and good to do something for yourself - to feel better, to look better, to be better, not because when you lose weight, someone will love you or you'll have a better job or your mother won't criticize you - and that will make you feel good. It is the process.

For those of us who love immediate gratification - the process of feeling good begins the moment we say "yes."

If you want to get your finances together, do it because it feels good to have order and well being - not because when you get your finances together you'll be able to buy the things that will make you feel good. It is the process.

It's all about the process - the ride - not the result. Choose the goal, get in action and let go of the result. When I choose the result, I don't have room for, nor can I see anything but my idea of the goal. And what's going to happen could be so much larger and bigger and better than what I think I want to happen. God's imagination is much bigger and better than mine. So just be in action toward the goal and let it take you wherever it may. If I say "yes" and go into the world - I don't know what's going to happen. But something is going to happen. If I say "no" I know what's going to happen - nothing. Do you want to stick with what you know and remain inactive - or jump into the unknown, where you are going to experience joy and sadness and love and loss and change and discomfort and growth and empowerment and activity and - life? This year - I choose "yes."

Everything we do is motivated from either wanting something we don't have or fearing that we will lose something we do have. This new year - unfurrow your brow. Stop coveting. Stop worrying about what you might lose� Or who you are if you don't get what you want - or think you are entitled to.

Keep your goals in mind but only as motivation for action - let the result be a surprise. Replace your fears and uncertainties with the accomplishment of living fully - daily. The small, seemingly unimportant tasks that make a life large.

Carmona describes the current health crisis as preventable and reversible. He notes that chronic disease accounts for 7 in 10 deaths and 75 cents of every dollar spent on health care in the United States.

As 17th U.S. surgeon general, Carmona worked to revise our nation's approach to health by emphasizing the importance of increasing prevention, eliminating health disparities and improving health literacy.

Carmona's rise to being "doctor of the nation" is particularly remarkable because of his disadvantaged childhood. He was homeless at age 6 and a high-school dropout at 17. Join us to hear Carmona's insights about our health-care challenges and opportunities - The Commonwealth Club of California

Dr. Richard H. Carmona was born to a poor family in New York City. Dr. Carmona experienced homelessness, hunger and health disparities during his youth. The experiences greatly sensitized him to the relationships among culture, health, education and economic status and shaped his future.

After dropping out of high school, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. While serving, he earned his General Equivalency Diploma and went on to become a combat-decorated Special Forces Vietnam veteran. After leaving active duty, he was able to attend Bronx Community College of the City University of New York through an open enrollment program for veterans. He earned an associate of arts degree and then attended the University of California, San Francisco, where he received a bachelor of science degree (1977) and medical degree (1979). At the University of California Medical School, Dr. Carmona was awarded the prestigious gold-headed cane as the top graduate.

Originally trained in general and vascular surgery after medical school, Dr. Carmona completed a
National Institutes of Health-sponsored fellowship in trauma, burns and critical care. He is a Fellow
of the American College of Surgeons. Recruited jointly by the Tucson (Arizona) Medical Center and
the University of Arizona, Dr. Carmona started and directed Arizona's first regional trauma care
system, and became the chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical
System, a professor of surgery, public health and family and community medicine at the University
of Arizona, and the Pima County Sheriff's Department surgeon and deputy sheriff.
