Did John McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis accept bribes from Freddie Mac?

John McCain claimed that Rick Davis had long severed ties with Freddie Mac and has not done any work for the lobbyist firm created by Freddie Mac in several years, but new reports show Rick Davis has been recieving $15,000 per month from Freddie Mac up until August of 2008, just one month ago.

VIA NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/us/politics/w24davis.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

"One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month from the end of 2005 through last month to a firm owned by Senator John McCains campaign manager, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement.

The disclosure undercuts a statement by Mr. McCain on Sunday night that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had had no involvement with the company for the last several years.

Mr. Daviss firm received the payments from the company, Freddie Mac, until it was taken over by the government this month along with Fannie Mae, the other big mortgage lender whose deteriorating finances helped precipitate the cascading problems on Wall Street, the people said.

They said they did not recall Mr. Daviss doing much substantive work for the company in return for the money, other than speak to a political action committee of high-ranking employees in October 2006 on the approaching midterm Congressional elections. They said Mr. Daviss firm, Davis & Manafort, had been kept on the payroll because of Mr. Daviss close ties to Mr. McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, who by 2006 was widely expected to run again for the White House."

On the Maddow Show, David Sirota and Rachel Maddow discuss McCain's long record of opposing regulations, his recent flip flop and his involvement in the Keating Five scandal.

Via the NYT:

"Speaking in Florida, he [McCain] said that the economys underlying fundamentals remained strong but were being threatened because of the greed by some based in Wall Street and we have got to fix it.

But his record on the issue, and the views of those he has always cited as his most influential advisers, suggest that he has never departed in any major way from his partys embrace of deregulation and relying more on market forces than on the government to exert discipline.

While Mr. McCain has cited the need for additional oversight when it comes to specific situations, like the mortgage problems behind the current shocks on Wall Street, he has consistently characterized himself as fundamentally a deregulator and he has no history prior to the presidential campaign of advocating steps to tighten standards on investment firms." www.nytimes.com

Barack Obama holds a press conference to address the potential government takeover of Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae mortgage companies laying out three benchmarks the government intervention must meet.

"First, any action we take has to be focused not on the whims of lobbyists and special interests worried about their bonuses or hourly fees but, whether it will strengthen the economy, help stablize the housing market, and whether it will help struggling homeowners who are also being hit by lost jobs, stagnant wages," Obama stated.

According to WaPo, the intervention would be the most significant takeover since the housing crisis began.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122072588739407007.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

"Any move by Treasury would represent perhaps the most significant intervention by the government in the financial industry since the housing bust touched off turmoil in the credit markets a little more than a year ago. From the $168 billion economic-stimulus package in February through the bailout of investment bank Bear Stearns Cos., the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve have taken an increasingly aggressive stance in responding to what has become one of the worst financial crises in decades.

Fannie and Freddie are vital cogs in the U.S. housing market. Their troubles have threatened to worsen the bursting of the housing bubble, which has led to a surge in foreclosures.

A Treasury intervention could help Main Street borrowers by keeping interest rates on mortgages lower than they would be in the event of continued instability."

It was fascinating to see the top Republicans struggle with the concept of community organizers this week. After all, these people would never turn to a community organizer. When they have a problem they just call one of the politicians they own.

Suppose they own an oil company and want higher profits. They just call the Bush White House or their friends in Congress and ask for more tax breaks. Suppose they run Halliburton or Blackwater. They call over to the White House or their friends in Congress to get some sweetheart no-bid contracts. Do you think the top executives in major corporations have any use for a community organizer?

The list goes on. If you're an investment bank that is essentially bankrupt, you call over to the Fed and get special below market loans and a public guarantee to your creditors that they will cover their losses in the event you go under. There's nothing like a guarantee from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke to maintain confidence in your bank.

If you're a nuclear power company, you arrange for the boys and girls in Congress to have the government provide you insurance in the event that your plant causes a catastrophe. And, if you're just a regular old rich person who wants more money in the bank, you call over to Senator McCain and tell him that you want him to give you some big tax breaks.

Even under strict new ethics rules, corporate lobbyists are spending millions of dollars and throwing lavish parties to influence lawmakers at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. ANP spoke with Nancy Watzman, head of the Sunlight Foundation's Party Time Project, who is tracking the "political partying circuit," as well as Jonathan Pontell, a cultural historian.

By all accounts, the 2008 Democratic Convention will be a celebration for the ages, but the enormous scale of the parties in Denver will not merely be a reflection of Barack Obama's historic candidacy. In the face of increasingly stringent lobbying regulations, lobbyist-sponsored convention parties have become the primary sites for corporate influence-peddling within the Democratic Party.

On the eve of the Convention, Nation political correspondent Ari Berman previews the behind-the-scenes wrangling that will occur at these closed-door affairs and highlights the conundrum they may pose for Barack Obama.

The Ohio Democratic Party is slamming McCain for his lobbyist ties to a deal that will cost the state over 8,000 jobs. According to the LA Times, McCain backed the sale of Airborne Express cargo service to Deutsche Post World Net, a German company that owned DHL, while he was Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee in 2003. Now that DHL is "in a tailspin," the company wants to shut down its Ohio hub, which will send the already ailing local economy into a tailspin of its own.

Why did McCain support this deal to begin with? It seems as though McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis was a lobbyist for Deutsche Post and received $185,000 for negotiating the 2003 deal. (Though the McCain campaign was quick to point out that Davis hasn't lobbied for DHL since 2005, that's because he's been busy as McCain's campaign manager!)

Sadly, 8,000 jobs could be just the beginning when you take a look at the lobbyists who are part of McCain's campaign. Crooks and Liars has more on why the economy isn't McCain's strong suit.

Was there ever any wonder why McCain flip-flopped on oil drilling? Yesterday, The Washington Post reported that McCain hauled in over $1.1 million from oil and gas industry executives last month, three-quarters of which came after his June 16 speech calling for an end to the ban on offshore drilling. So while McCain was out blaming Obama for high prices at the pump, he was reaping the rewards of pandering to the oil industry.

Of course, the fact that Big Oil is fueling the Straight Talk Express is nothing new. Even prior to McCain's flip-flop, The Center for Responsive Politics found that the McCain campaign had taken over $1 million from oil and gas industry since 1989. Furthermore, at least 22 of McCain's top advisers and fundraisers have lobbied for oil companies like Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, Sunoco, and more. And while the WaPo article certainly dealt a major blow to the McCain campaign, McCain's voting record reveals that he's been giving tax breaks to Big Oil for years.
For a more on McCain's oil drilling flip-flop, check out Friday's Meet the Bloggers. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid discussed the energy crisis with host Cenk Uygur and bloggers Jonathan Kim, Nico Pitney, Matt Stoller, and Kevin Grandia.

FOX Business likes to trot out the opinion du jour at the faux business network. It's a FOX favorite tactic to omit key information about a guest that they feel might jeopardize or weaken that guest's credibility.

On July 25th, on "America's Nightly Scoreboard" host David Asman did a lengthy interview with Texas Republican Congressman Jeb Hensarling on the topic of the millions of dollars of campaign donations made over the last ten years by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

Poor Rep. Hensarling!

Halfway through the interview he made a slip of the tongue that gave it away, telling Asman that the Freddie and Fannie lobbyists hadn't been to his office "in a while"!

Oops!

A little research on the Congressman reveals that since 1989 he's accepted $1.8 million in campaign donations, largely from banking PACs.

John McCain
Livestrong Summit
Columbus, OH - 07/24/08

TRANSCRIPT:
MCCAIN: "And I'd like to tell you very briefly, some years ago I was involved in an effort on the floor of the United States Senate to bring about meaningful action to bring about the tobacco companies, a meaningful effort to bring about the cessation of use of tobacco products in this country. And I'm sorry to tell you, to stand before you and tell you we were defeated. We were defeated by the special interests. And then, there was an agreement, and I think many of you are familiar with, between the attorney's generals and the tobacco companies. And there, a lot of the tax money on the packs of cigarettes was given to the states. And the states were supposed to use it for anti-tobacco, treatment of tobacco related illness and advertising to combat amongst young people the use of tobacco products. And I'm sorry to stand before you tonight and tell you that not one state is using that tobacco money for that purpose. It's disgraceful, and when you go back to your respective states tell them to use that money for the purpose that it was intended."

John McCain
Livestrong Summit
Columbus, OH - 07/24/08

TRANSCRIPT:
PAULA ZAHN: [...] Are you essentially saying that those members of Congress are being bought and sold by the tobacco lobbies and that's why this issue won't move forward?

MCCAIN: I believe that the reason why we failed in enacting the legislation that passed through the Commerce Committee that I was chairman of, with one dissenting vote, that the reason why we failed was because of the influence of the tobacco companies, yes. And any objective observer would tell you that.

ZAHN: So as president what would you do about that? How do you stop that?

MCCAIN: I would lead America. I would lead America, and I would tell the American people to clean up this mess. My friends, how many people just were shocked when they filled up their gas tank? You know what Congress is doing today to try to address our energy problems? They're in gridlock. Gridlock, doing nothing. We're doing nothing. It's time American's put our country first and our party second. [...] If you asked anyone who observed our efforts to enact this legislation at the time, they will tell you that it is was the influence of the tobacco company. Now there were many members of Congress, and I don't know which ones that had honestly held views about in opposition to the legislation that we reported out of the committee that I chaired. And I respect those honestly held views, but I also believe that the tobacco companies played a very big role in making sure that legislation did not pass the United States Senate.

ZAHN: So what is it that members of Congress are afraid of in going up against the tobacco lobbyists? I mean obviously we know the kind of money that is contributed to campaigns. Above and beyond that, what is their fear?

MCCAIN: I'm not sure that they're fear, I think that they're rewarded.

ZAHN: Rewarded in what way?

MCCAIN: Campaign contributions, many other ways. There's many ways that that happens in Washington.

ZAHN: And how do you stop that?

MCCAIN: Well, the American people are sick and tired of being sick and tired. And they want Washington cleaned up. And I will lead that effort. I didn't win Miss Congeniality in the United States Senate again this year because I took on the special interests, I've taken on the special interests. I've joined with Russ Feingold with campaign finance reform, I have joined with Ted Kennedy on immigration reform. [...] So, I've taken on the special interests and I've fought against them. And as President of the United States I think I can be much more effective. I think that's what presidents can do.
