When it comes to the nation of female beauty, Nouakchot to day is a place of contrast to most other world capitals. On these streets it is a fat woman who turns heads - not a thin one. In Mauritania slim is not 'in' - but is force-feeding a justifiable practice to meet the local beauty standard?

The Mauritanian army puts soldiers on the streets of the capital, and the civilian leadership in detention, as it takes power of Mauritanian in a coup. The military junta deposed the government just over a year after country's first democratic elections since independence in the 1960's. The coup leaders promised to hold fresh elections "as soon as possible". Inside story asks: is it a set back for democracy? Or setting the right democratic path after a power struggle at the top?

A military coup in Mauritania brings opposition supporters out in celebration, and puts the country's democratically elected leaders in jail.

Mauritania, in the north-west of Africa, has been gripped by political uncertainty since its government faced a no-confidence vote last month.

The president and other key leaders are being held by the army. The head of Mauritania's presidential guard has declared himself in charge.

Al Jazeera's Dorsa Jabbari reports.

In the last year in Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott, the number of reported sexual assaults has tripled.

But rape convictions in the north-west African country remain rare.

Charity groups say its because judges are poorly educated about sexual violence, and outdated laws make it difficult to bring rapists to justice.

The West African country of Mauritania is host to one of the longest trains in the world.

The train is mainly used to transport iron ore from the mines to ports on the Atlantic Ocean, but it also provides a lifeline for many Mauritanians who live deep in the Sahara desert.

Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker has the story.

Benta tells Al Jazeera her story.
