During an interview with Chris Matthews on Hardball and later on the phone with Keith Olbermann, former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan finally went on the record, admitting that FOX News was, in effect, acting as an arm of the Executive Branch.

Olbermann and Air America's Rachel Maddow discuss this final confirmation of what many of us have known for years.

Even though McClellan would not go so far as to implicate the FOX journalists in this cozy arrangement, it's clear that the evening crowd - Gibson, Ingraham, Cavuto, O'Reilly and Hannity - act as surrogates for White House talking points.

As Maddow points out, the White House is free to use any surrogates it wants.

What is illegal is for the news outlet to keep its connections to the White House secret.

Yesterday, former press secretary Scott McClellan appeared on MSNBC’s Countdown to discuss last week’s Senate Intelligence Report, which found that the White House “built the public case for war against Iraq by exaggerating available intelligence and by ignoring disagreements among spy agencies about Iraq’s weapons programs and Saddam Hussein’s links to al Qaeda.” McClellan accused White House officials of having their “heads in the sand” and said they tried to block the committee’s investigation:

The White House never wanted to have the way the case was made, the way the intelligence was used to sell the war to the American people looked into by Congress. This was delayed for quite some time and Senator Rockefeller pushed this forward to get to the truth. And, the White House can continue to bury their heads in the sand but the reality is still the same.

I think the American people see it for exactly what it is. … We came to the very same conclusion that the intelligence was used in a way to make the threat sound more grave and urgent and serious than it was.

Scott McClellan Blames Bush and Cheney For Plame Leak Deception

In a stunning revelation and indictment of the Bush administration, former White House press secretary Scott McClellan today went public with his assertion that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney mislead the public about the role of White House aides in leaking the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

In excerpts released from his forthcoming book, “What Happened”, which isn't due out until April, McClellan recounts the 2003 news conference in which he told reporters that aides Karl Rove, Scooter Libby and I were "not involved" in the leak involving operative Valerie Plame. McClellan wrote,

There was one small problem. It was not true. I had unknowingly passed along false information and five of the highest-ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so. Rove, Libby, Vice-President Cheney, Chief-Of-Staff Andrew Card and President Bush himself.

Bush, in commuting Libby's 30-month prison term in July said the case was closed and it was time to move on. I think not. Stay tuned.
