UC-Berkeley Professor of History Kathleen Frydl draws parallels between the Vietnam War and the current war in Iraq.

-----

Kathleen Frydl discusses Echoes of the 60s.

Are we now living in an era that echoes the 1960s? Comparisons between the wars in Iraq and Vietnam have become commonplace rhetorical devices in political campaigns, newspaper columns, and stand-up comedy routines. These comparisons can be illustrative, illuminating, and even funny, but are they apt?

In conversation with Grace Cathedral's Dean, Alan Jones, U.C. Berkeley professor of history Kathleen Frydl will discuss the cultural features - the rise of the mass media, fluctuations in American knowledge and public opinion, the level of public trust in government - of the Vietnam Era against the backdrop of the intervening 40 years and today's zeitgeist.

Kathleen Frydl's field is the U.S. since 1607, with special emphasis on the 20th century. Thus far her research has focused on political history and, within that subfield, she has maintained a particular interest in institutions. She lectures survey courses on recent U.S. history, political history from the Gilded Age, and (with her colleague Peter Zinoman) on the Vietnam War.

Her forthcoming book, The GI Bill, will be published by Cambridge University Press - Grace Cathedral

This little ditty is a remix of the video that surfaced Monday, in which O'Reilly has a meltdown on "Inside Edition." The original O'Reilly video sparked a bit of a to-do because CBS had YouTube remove it from their site, leaving many blogs with dead links. I myself ended up with an error message to the effect of: "This video is no longer available due to copyright claim by CBS Broadcasting, Inc."

CBS does have a copyright claim because they own King World Productions (now CBS Distribution), which created "Inside Edition" originally. Of course, the more CBS intervened, the more the video spread. As you can see on this YouTube search, the video is now all over the place. So was CBS's copyright enforcement bullshit from the start? Didn't they realize this video was so juicy that determined bloggers would circumvent copyright restrictions? Or was CBS under pressure from O'Reilly or FOX?

Now that the O'Reilly video is out there, keep spreading it. You can also download the remixed song for free. And, for more hilarity, check out Colbert's take on all of this.

Thanks for viewing and post your comments at the bottom. If you disagree with the thoughts, please be civil in explaining your disagreements. Cause it only makes you look pretty stupid if you resort to attacks on me and others viewing.

I don't think the American conservatives are getting the message. Matter of fact, I don't think they could be real conservatives. They can never fit the shoes of George Will and the late William F. Buckley.

Over three months now, and it seems that the Republican Party is looking forward to taking on the presumed nominee Democratic Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

But quarry the anger in the Black community. The death of Sean Bell has been received "local" coverage. This "local" coverage is truly an outrage in America. The mentality of the police and Blacks has been a touchy subject for years. I don't understand how the media could avoid this! And to think that the mainstream media is so focused on Jeremiah Wright is just an example of how corrupt the media is.

WorldNetDaily, a conservative opinion journal spearheaded this movement to smear Barack Obama. It's been led by Aaron Kline, a journalist who has ties to Jerusalem and a notorious history of falsehoods. Eric Rush, a conservative Black journalist has also benefited from writing the piece called "Obamanation", it can be found on WorldNetDaily's website. Kline and Rush have written smear pieces on Obama for the past three years.

Talk radio host and FOX News commentator Sean Hannity takes credit for "exposing" Barack Obama's church, Trinity United Church of Chicago. His feud with Jeremiah Wright stems from the "Hannity & Colmes" debate in which Wright confronted the falsehoods of his church. Now for over a year, Hannity has been on this mission to distract Americans. His audience is mostly conservatives who would not vote for Obama, so it's most likely I would not worry too much about the impact.

But in the terms of the FOX Virus, Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly are spreading the falsehoods about Obama, while covering up their notorious history of bigotry and ignorance. They jump on a Black preacher for talking but never bat an eye for the controversial comments of Glenn Beck, John Hagee, Michael Savage, Pat Buchanan, Bill Bennett, Ann Coulter, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and Rod Paisley.

In regards to the conservatives who are watching: I know this may seem to be a little out of your league but its simplistic! The Republicans are desperate for attention. They couldn't get Obama for being a Muslim, so they get him for being a Christian.

Now, if you are frequent listener to his radio program The Sean Hannity's [America] Show. Try to count up how many times the pundit says Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton. Then during the three hours tally up how many times Hannity says these names. If you happen to get over 50 mentions of Jeremiah Wright, call his show at 1-800-941-SEAN and tell him: "I did a count on how many times you have mentioned Jeremiah Wright (or insert Bill Ayers)! I was wondering how many times you are going to mention the high gas prices, the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, and the Sean Bell trial!"

Also, if you want to mention Bohemian Grove, the 9/11 truth movement, or the Republican loss in Illinois and Louisiana, feel free to address his show. I am preparing to call him out on his constant attacks on Barack Obama and his church.

Rest in peace to those who died in the Midwest, South and Western tornados! Tiffany Snow, former high school friend. Those who died in the Burma cyclone! Those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan! And to those who have died serving our country.

Thank you to Tanya Acker, Bob Beckel, Jane Fleming Kleeb, and Alan Colmes for at least proving that you are not FOX News Democrats!

Congratulations to Jenna Bush on getting married to her longtime boyfriend. President Bush gets some good news for this troubling year.

www.ted.com Speaking at the first TED Conference in 1984, Nicholas Negroponte waxes prophetic on the converging fields of technology, entertainment and design. Years before anyone was using the word "convergence," Negroponte was thinking about TV screens as the "electronic books of the future" and computers as the future of education. In excerpts from his 2-hour talk (this was before TED's 18-minute time limit), he foreshadowed CD-ROMs, web interfaces, service kiosks, the touchscreen interface of the iPhone, and his own One Laptop per Child project. Oh, and there's also a fascinating project called Lip Service, which, well, let's just say it's still ahead of us ...

If you feel that you can create web content with enough quality and originality to catch the attention of web users, you should explore the possibility of using social networking and bookmarking websites as a marketing tool.

The power of buzz marketing in the Web 2.0 world allows even the smallest business the opportunity to make a huge impact.

Founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, social news website Reddit offers several interesting marketing possibilities. In essence, Reddit users post links to content and other users then give the content an up or down vote. Enough up votes and the link rises to the Reddit home page while a lot of down votes will condemn the content to obscurity.

http://StopBigMedia.com

Hard-hitting journalism is nearing extinction on television, and the Federal Communications Commission just threw another shovel-full of dirt on its grave when it recently ruled that Rupert Murdoch's TMZ and Pat Robertson's 700 Club meet the test for "a bona fide newscast." Media companies get their broadcast licenses for free. In return, the FCC says that if a TV show is not a bona fide newscast, and it airs a story about a political candidate, "it must afford equal opportunities to other such candidates for that office." This is supposed to keep ideologues like Pat Robertson and Rupert Murdoch in check. But instead the FCC let them off the hook by adding TMZ and 700 Club to the list of bona fide newscasts; even though Congress defined bona fide as newscasts as those that hold "genuine news value" and are not intended to boost or aid any particular political candidate.

Free Press Exec Director Josh Silver has more at HuffPo.

Some Excerpts Below
Tomorrow will be two weeks since I became President. I have spent a lot of time deciding how I can be a good President. This talk, which the broadcast networks have agreed to bring to you, is one of several steps that I will take to keep in close touch with the people of our country, and to let you know informally about our plans for the coming months.
One of our most urgent projects is to develop a national energy policy. As I pointed out during the campaign, the United States is the only major industrial country without a comprehensive, long-range energy policy. Our program will emphasize conservation. The amount of energy being wasted which could be saved is greater than the total energy that we are importing from foreign countries. We will also stress development of our rich coal reserves in an environmentally sound way; we will emphasize research on solar energy and other renewable energy sources; and we will maintain strict safeguards on necessary atomic energy production. We must face the fact that the energy shortage is permanent. There is no way we can solve it quickly. But if we all cooperate and make modest sacrifices, if we learn to live thriftily and remember the importance of helping our neighbors, then we can find ways to adjust and to make our society more efficient and our own lives more enjoyable and productive. Utility companies must promote conservation and not consumption. Oil and natural gas companies must be honest with all of us about their reserves and profits. We will find out the difference between real shortages and artificial ones. We will ask private companies to sacrifice, just as private citizens must do. Our Nation was built on the principle of work and not welfare; productivity and not stagnation. But I took office a couple of weeks ago in the middle of the worst economic slowdown of the last 40 years. More than 7 1/2 million people who want to work cannot find it according to the latest statistics. Because of high unemployment and idle factories the average American family like yours has been losing $1,800 a year in income, and many billions of dollars have been added to the Federal deficit. Also, inflation hurts us all. In every part of the country, whether we have a job or whether we are looking for a job, we must race just to keep up with the constant rise in prices. Inflation has hit us hardest, not in luxuries, but in the essentials—food, energy, health, housing. You see it every time you go shopping. The top priority in our job training programs will go to young veterans of the Vietnam war. Unemployment is much higher among veterans than among others of the same age who did not serve in the military. I hope that putting many thousands of veterans back to work will be one more step toward binding up the wounds of the war years and toward helping those who have helped our country in the past. I have also made commitments about our Nation's foreign policy. As Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, I am determined to have a strong, lean, efficient fighting force. Our policy should be based on close cooperation with our allies and worldwide respect for human rights, a reduction in world armaments, and it must always reflect our own moral values. I want our Nation's actions to make you proud. I would like to tell you now about one of the things that I have already learned in my brief time in office. I have learned that there are many things that a President cannot do. There is no energy policy that we can develop that would do more good than voluntary conservation. There is no economic policy that will do as much as shared faith in hard work, efficiency, and in the future of our system.

For the past forty years Noam Chomsky's writings on politics and language have established him as a preeminent public intellectual and as one of the most original and wide-ranging political and social critics of our time. Among the seminal figures in linguistic theory over the past century, since the 1960s Chomsky has also secured a place as perhaps the leading dissident voice in the United States.

Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor emeritus of linguistics at MIT and the author of numerous books including Chomsky vs. Foucault: A Debate on Human Nature, On Language, Objectivity and Liberal Scholarship, and Towards a New Cold War (all published by The New Press). He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This event took place on April 22, 2008 at the Google Cambridge office, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

Minnesota's Republican Party seems very camera-shy. Over the past several months Republicans have prevented journalists from recording their candidates at events. The latest incident was rather dramatic as Gavin Sullivan was tossed out of the Republican convention for district 42B for shooting video.

The UpTake's Mike McIntee shows us Gavin Sullivan's video and talks to another journalist who has been tossed out twice from Republican events. Here's Gavin Sullivan, a citizen journalist, trying to cover the Minnesota Republican Convention for District 42 B. Watch what happens.

Unfortunately it's not an isolated incident. Over the past several months, Minnesota Republicans have repeated booted video journalists from their events.

This is Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann at a recent tax rally. You can see and hear her here because the rally was at the state capital. But you can't see or hear what she said when shewas endorsed last month. That's because the sixth district GOP banned all cameras and audio recording devices, including The Saint Cloud Times and Minnesota Public Radio.

The UpTake's video volunteers have been booted from the party's state convention in Blaine and a debate between Republican First Congressional candidates in Jackson, and the Republican First Congressional convention in Albert Lea. Kyle Potter, a Volunteer Journalist for The UpTake describes what happened to him.

"A few weeks ago, I got the assignment to go there and I emailed and called the person who was in charge of the event, the chair person for the first congressional district, and I got no response. So I figured, OK I'll just go down there. I'll talk to someone at the press credential table and we'll see what happens.

"I went down. I didn't see any press credential table so I walked in and I set up my camera. I filmed for awhile and I was told by the Sergeant-At-Arms that I have to register my camera. I asked him who to do that with, and he said that he would talk to the person who I emailed originally.

"The Sergeant-At-Arms comes back and says that I was denied access. And I asked why and he said there wasn't any reason given. So I had to leave.

That's kind of similar to another time when I was up in Blaine. I was doing pretty much the same thing. Before the event started I talked to the communications director at the Minnesota GOP and told him what I was doing there and said everything. And then later a guy aggressively approached me. That time it was aggressively approached me and said that I had to leave. And gave no reason. He didn't identify who he was. He didn't say why he could tell me to leave. I eventually asked him to go talk to the communications director and he came back and just said I have to leave."

The DFL makes it a policy to allow press, including videobloggers to attend all of its conventions and debates. Republican Blogger Michael Brodkorb says it's a policy "the Republicans should look at mirroring".

It seems that Arianna Huffington has run up against the impenetrable wall that is Tim Russert's ego. Huffington, who is currently on tour for her new book Right Is Wrong: How The Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded The Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe, will be appearing on CNN, ABC, and CBS. She had been booked on Morning Joe and Countdown with Keith Olbermann as well, but those bookings were suddenly and inexplicably cancelled.

NBC confirmed that Huffington wouldn't be booked on any NBC-affiliated show to promote her book, but refused to explain why. Huffington's people say that this is Tim Russert's doing, that Russert is out for revenge because Huffington called him a "conventional wisdom zombie" in her book and devoted seven pages to faulting Russert for allowing his Meet the Press guests to go unchallenged (not to mention HuffPo's RussertWatch).

If Huffington's claim is true and Russert has been pulling rank with NBC, then this whole affair smacks of immature middle-school antics. Is Russert really that sensitive that he can't take criticism from Huffington? And if he truly thinks his show hasn't become an outlet for Bush administration figures to push their message uncontested (as Huffington suggests), then shouldn't he bring Huffington on and challenge her assertions? Or, at the very least, allow Huffington to go on another NBC show?

Probably not, since that would mean Russert would have to ask tough questions for a change.

It’s no secret that MoveOn.org members have been very supportive of Barack Obama’s candidacy – endorsing him with a 70% vote, raising lots of small dollar donations for him, sending hundreds of thousands of personal endorsement emails to friends and family before key primaries and caucuses, and making over 1,000 30-second ads on his behalf (one of which will soon air on national TV). We’re excited about his candidacy, and we think he’ll make a great president. But Obama did himself, the Democratic Party, and the progressive movement a disservice this weekend.

It was a mistake for Obama to go on FOX’s Sunday show and treat the experience as if it was a real news interview. Democratic politicians need to understand that FOX is a Republican mouthpiece masquerading as a news outlet. When dealing with FOX, you either burn them or they will burn you.

It's well documented that FOX executives send morning memos to anchors and reporters dictating Republican talking points. In 2006, one said, “Be on the lookout for any statements from the Iraqi insurgents...thrilled at the prospect of a Dem controlled Congress.” Robert Greenwald's videos have shown FOX's consistent pattern of smearing Barack Obama, smearing Hillary Clinton, smearing African Americans, and denying global warming.

FOX's power lies not in its audience size – which is puny and consists mostly of unpersuadable voters. Instead, FOX's power comes from tricking politicians and real journalists into treating their “breaking stories” like real news, thereby propelling smears like the Swift Boats and Rev. Wright into the mainstream political dialogue. That's why progressives fought (successfully) last year to deprive FOX of the legitimacy that comes with hosting a Democratic presidential debate. And that's why Democratic politicians should never treat FOX like a real news outlet - including FOX's Sunday show.

Barack Obama's campaign made a promise before this weekend's appearance. They said he would "take Fox on" – inspiring hope among those who watched Bill Clinton in 2006, Chris Dodd in 2007, and progressive activist Lee Camp in 2008 delegitimize FOX on the air. But Obama didn't do that, and he suffered as a result.

Barack Obama didn’t call out FOX for what they are — a Republican propaganda outlet — when he appeared on FOX News Sunday to talk to Chris Wallace. Unfortunately, this means Obama, the Democrats, and American democracy lost.

Obama did a respectable job answering Wallace’s light/medium-biased questions, but he didn’t go after FOX the way his campaign claimed Obama would in a Friday statement to Talking Points Memo. Instead, he made the error of treating the interview as if it was actually an interview, not an ambush staged by enemies committed to destroying him. Because FOX had two main goals for Obama’s appearance: to further the appearance that FOX is actually a news organization and to gather ammunition against Obama.

FOX clearly accomplished their first goal, since nothing could legitimize FOX more than having a top presidential candidate (and a Democrat, no less) do a sit-down interview with them. What Obama and his campaign failed to realize is how destructive it is to the Democratic party, as well as America and its democracy, to have people think that FOX is anything other than a Republican propaganda outlet. By legitimizing FOX, the stories they run, the lies they tell, and the opinions they espouse are also legitimized. There’s no better example of this than the recent ABC debate, where George Stephanopoulos thought that Sean Hannity would be a good person to ask for questions to ask Obama. Why would Stephanopoulos think that Sean Hannity—a racist, serial liar, and FOX’s strongest, most consistent purveyor of anti-Obama misinformation—is a “fair and balanced” authority on Obama? Because Hannity is on FOX, and Stephanopoulos thinks FOX is a news organization. “Fair and Balanced” is right there in their slogan. And because more high profile democrats don’t identify FOX for what it is, FOX is allowed to retain its appearance of legitimacy, which is all they want. They don’t want to be a news organization — they simply want to create the appearance that they are a news organization to provide cover for their propaganda. And, sadly, Obama was a willing participant in furthering that appearance.
