John McCain's attacks on Barack Obama are designed to distract from his plans to cut social security and healthcare benefits

The McCain-Palin ticket has developed an interesting campaign strategy. They don’t want the public to see their plans to dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and the system of employer-provided health care. To distract people from these policies that will directly affect their lives they are taking politics to new lows.

Among the highlights for the cesspool two is the nonsense that Senator Obama was calling Governor Palin a barnyard animal when he used the old expression “putting lipstick on a pig.” Then Senator McCain told us that he approved of an ad calling Senator Obama a sexual pervert.

These two are happy to throw out any sort of vile lie because the more time the media and the public spend focusing on this garbage, the less time they will have to notice that Senator McCain wants to privatize and cut their Social Security. Senator McCain thinks that America’s workers have it too easy when they retire. He wants them to retire later and have less money when they do.

John McCain
Speech
Aspen, CO 08/14/08

TOPIC: McCain, social security, taxes, medicare, Reagan

TRANSCRIPT:
ISAACSON: This is the 73rd anniversary of Social Security... you called the funding mechanism a disgrace recently. How would you change it?

MCCAIN: ... It's a pay as you go system. [...] As you know, we have the trustees of the Social Security system. And they are the people appointed to give us an evaluation every year of the condition of Social Security... and the trustees have stated repeatedly, and David Walker, who now works for the coalition, who was once head of the government accountability office, I think is the best talking about this. There's gonna come a time, and there's argument about when that year is, but it's not that far away. When there's more money goin out than comin in. And when there's no money left. [...] The situation today is that younger workers who are contributing to the system, the way it was designed, will not receive the same benefits as present day retirees. That's not fair. [...] The approval rating of Congress is at 9%. [...] Congress is at a gridlock on everything [...] One of our earliest memories was 1983, Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil, the liberal democrat from Massachussetts,[...] And Ronald Reagan sat down together with the benefit of a Greenspan study. And they said "Okay, we're gonna fix social security." And they walked out in the rose garden, stood next to each other. It may not have been the solution that I wanted, [...] or anyone else, but it was a solution, and we saved Social Security for about 25 or 30 years. It was about to go bankrupt. Now, why can't we do that again? [...] It isn't that complicated. [...] Medicare is complicated, my friends, [...] Social security- there have been study after study after study-

ISAACSON: But shouldn't it be like the energy policy, where everything is on the table, we do a little of everything?

MCCAIN: Yes, and as you know, I am opposed to tax increases [...] I think we can fix this without it. Am I am confident that I can convince the people on the other side of the table that we do not need tax increases.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
07/07/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "[...] I recently met a man named Frank from Colorado Springs who falls into the Medicare Part D donut hole. And I've heard your answers here that [...] if we do what we did 20 years ago with [...] Medicare what we did with Social Security and go back and really kind of fix the problem. Do you have a more concrete answer for what you do for somewhat like Frank who's a veteran like yourself, in a wheelchair, amputee, and can't pay [...] his prescription drug bill?

JOHN MCCAIN: "Well the first thing that I would do is make sure that, if he's a veteran, that he gets vet—eligibility for veterans' care. [...] Now we all know about Walter Reed and we know about some of the problems of veterans health care. But there is a flip side to that. And there's a lot of veterans health care facilities that are wonderful [...].

Second of all, [...] there's Social Security disability payments, there are other programs. But if he's not eligible [...] I will make sure that we address that issue [...] A Medi-gap issue is there and we're gonna have to address it as well and put a fix in. No American should go without health care; that's one of the obligations of our society.

MCCAIN: "But I also have to tell you if the costs of health care continue to skyrocket, and we don't do anything about that, we're not gonna have affordable and available health care for any American. And we have got to get those costs under control because there are not incentives now for people to keep health care costs down. And that's many of the proposals that I have outlined. Including [...] outcome-based care. [...] There's a pilot program, which has been very successful. It's called cash-in counseling, where we have given seniors actually the money in order to take care of their own health care needs. [...]

MCCAIN: "As far as people are in these different doughnuts—and there are a number of them—obviously we have to fix them and we have to fill them. [...]

MCCAIN: "And I'd be glad to hear from you and hear from Frank and see exactly how we can help him immediately without working on any specific government program [...]"

MCCAIN: "My whole thrust is that we've got to put more decisions in the hands of the user. We've got to have a whole range of actions taken in order to bring inflation down; and among them are [sic] to give every American family a $5K refundable tax credit so they can go across state lines--which they can't now--to find an insurance policy of their choice [...]."

TRACKING:
JOHN MCCAIN: "I want to get costs down. There's 10% inflation in Medicare last year. 10%. No system can sustain itself with 10% inflation..."

"I was at a town hall meeting here in Iowa. A guy stood up and said, I love my health insurance policy. I just got a notice that next year my insurance was going up by $800. IT's not the quality, it's the affordability. So we're going to have to do a whole lot of things. Including, giving people a chance to go across state lines to get their own health insurance. Take on the pharmaceutical companies."

"Do you know that the attorney general of [Iowa] and the attorney general of the state of South Carolina have both sued the pharmaceutical companies for overcharges of pharmaceuticals for their Medicaid patients?"

"Why didn't we know what those costs were to start with? Why did we have to have attorney generals sue?"

"Most importantly, I want to give families a $5,000 refundable tax credit that they can take anywhere in America and get the health insurance they think their family needs. I think for the 5 chronic illnesses...we ought to have an outcome based payment system."

MCCAIN: "We'll go to two programs, Social Security and Medicare, period. So, umm, let me just give you a small example, the SCHIP program. Is there anyone here who doesn't want healthcare for children? I don't think so. But you know how they're gonna pay for it?... By increasing the tax on cigarettes by a dollar a pack. Now let me get this straight, we want to take care of children's healthcare but we want everyone to smoke to pay for it."

TRANSCRIPTION
QUESTIONER: Eight years in the White House is a long time and I'm wondering if you have the health and endurance to do eight years because it's very demanding.

JOHN MCCAIN: "If I said that I was running for eight years [laughs] I'm not sure taht would be a vote-getter. I brought my mother who is 95 around with me on the campaign trail and she is a very energetic person. I'm trying to show how good my genes are.

"[...] My health is good. My campaign schedule is heavier than anybody else's. I've said many times, 'I can out-campaign anybody,' and I feel very vigorous. I think the decision as to run for re-election has to do with circumstances at the time. I really do.

"You shouldn't run for eight years because then you think you've got eight years to get these things done. We gotta get these things done immediately. We don't have time to waste. We don't have eight years.

"We don't have eight years to fix Social Security or Medicare. We don't have eight years to secure our borders so that we can stop the flood of illegal immigrants coming into this country. We don't have eight years. We've got to get goin' right away from day one.

"All I can say is I'm runnin' for a four year term."

Town Hall Meeting
Denver, CO 05/02/08

TRANSCRIPT:
INTERVIEWER: "Hi Winnie, my name's Greg."

WINNIE FINELLI: "Hi Greg."

INTERVIEWER: "What did you think of the event?"

FINELLI: "I thought it was great."

INTERVIEWER: "What'd you like the most about it?"

FINELLI: "Well, I um I really like McCain because my top priority is national defense. But I was really impressed with the way he was able to relate to the crowd. His sense of humor was absolutely fantastic."

INTERVIEWER: "Yeah, he's a funny guy."

FINELLI: "I hadn't noticed that before."

INTERVIEWER: "What'd you think about his health care plan?"

FINELLI: "I've gotta tell you, I've got some partial feelings about health care and I agree with anything that says you can control your own. Frankly . . . I have a really wonderful healthcare plan and I'm really worried when I have to go on Medicare that I won't get as good health care as I do now . . . "

INTERVIEWER: "One more question, how do you feel about his Federal Gas Tax Holiday this summer?"

FINELLI: "You know, I think it's uhh, it's a campaign stunt. I mean really. Like I said, I love McCain. And it's a great and it will really help a lot of people, my goodness. I mean my son, he travels three hours a day to work and so man he'll love it. I mean does it really, I mean it's not a lot of money. So I think it makes people feel better."

INTERVIEWER: "So do you think, so when you say it's just a 'campaign', you think it's just because it's an election season and it's just what people want to hear?"

FINELLI: "Oh yeah, I do. It's what people want to hear."

[...]

INTERVIEWER: "Do you think it's at all a contradiction that he says he wants to get off, become energy independent, he ended on that note that it's important to achieve energy independence so we're not dependent on the Middle East for foreign oil. Do you think that's at all a contradiction that the Federal Gas Tax Holiday doesn't help that at all, it just encourages us to consume more oil because it brings down the cost?"

FINELLI: "I think he really does want to do whatever we can to fix the oil problem but I'm not confident that'll happen in my lifetime. But, you know. I still think it's just something that makes people feel happy right now . . . it's not a long term solution by any means [laughs]."

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . when you become president what will you do to overhaul Medicare?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "Secretary of Health and Human Services . . . gave a speech yesterday . . . where he basically talked about the fact that Medicare's going broke. And Americans need straight talk. Americans need straight talk. And that is that the Medicare system in America is not going to be there for the next generation of Americans. And we have an obligation . . . not to pass on an unacceptable situation to the next generation . . . and we're gonna have to sit down together and we're going to have to work it out so that we can get . . . Medicare for succeeding generations who are now paying into the system . . . I believe the key to this is not the quality of health care in America . . . the quality of health care in America is the best in the world . . . it's the cost of health care, it's the cost of health care that makes it not available to all Americans . . . we've got to get the cost under control . . . we cannot afford double digit or near double digit escalation of health care costs in America. We have to have . . . more treatment of chronic disease . . . if they have that then you give the caregiver a certain amount of money for that treatment and care and then, at the end of a period of time, you reward that caregiver or not . . . there's a lot of common sense solutions to this but there's not any one solution . . . the Secretary of Health and Human services is right . . . I will reach across the aisle to the Democrats . . . I will say, look, Social security's not gonna be there for the next generation and Medicare's not going to be there for the next generation . . .
Town Hall Meeting
Des Moines, IA 05/01/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . and I'd also like to say, one of your early supporters in this campaign was Senator Sam Brownback. When he dropped out he endorsed you very quickly. He embraced, line by line word for word a proposal for reforming Social Security that was advanced by Bill Shipman at the CATO Institute. And it was designed to create, give people the choice: do you want to stay in this system or do you want to have your own account? And historically what's happened in other parts of the world is that it's created two groups, a declining group of seniors due to mortality supported by an ever-increasing group of younger people entering the work force . . . And I was wondering if you had spoken with Senator Brownback about that or if because what you're talking about in Medicare with the optional accounts, you know where you get the income yourself, it sounds like what he was proposing with Social Security . . . "

JOHN MCCAIN: "Thank you. I appreciate Senator Brownback very much, he's a great defender of the family and one of the great honest and decent people I've had the honor of knowing. I think one of the things, aspects of this, that really actually you're referring to, correct me if I'm wrong, personal savings account. That young Americans who are working, can take some of their social security taxes and put it into an account that has their name on it and they would have access to that in their retirement years. That would certainly not apply to anyone who is presently retired or age 55 or older. It would only apply to younger workers. I think it's a viable proposal, and I think it's a good option. But I think we can't lose sight of the fact that social security also is going broke. And we have to sit down together, it's very much like Medicare, only the size of the problem in Social Security is not as big as the size of the problem in Medicare. And we have to sit down together and put everything on the table . . ."

Coral Gables, FL 04/26/08

TRANSCRIPT:
MCCAIN: "Well I don't think there's much doubt that social security for present day retirees will probably remain there. There is sufficient amount of money for a lot of them. What I worry more about is younger workers who are in the workforce now, who, according to any calculation, by any economist or any expert on social security, know that those benefits will not be there for future generations of Americans. So I say to them I believe your social security will be there, those of present retirees. But I have to have some straight talk to present day workers, particularly younger ones, that it's not gonna be there. And that's why we have to sit down, Republicans and Democrats together, and fix this system before we, uh, put the next generation of Americans in jeopardy of not having the benefits which they have earned and paid into the system. So my message to them is that I will as president sit down across the aisle with Democrats, and we will fix social security, and we will fix Medicare, and we will do that. But first we have to eliminate the pork barrel and wasteful spending of which Senator Obama and Senator Clinton have induled in to hundreds of dollars of the taxpayers' dollars on earmark projects that have no scrutiny, no hearings, no, no examinations, but they're inserted in the middle of the night as pork barrel projects. I've never done that, they have, and we will stop that process."

John McCain
Town Hall
Greendale, WI

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "I was just wondering what are you planning on doing to help correct Social Security?"

MCCAIN: "Well, first of all I'd like to give you a little straight talk and I'm sorry to give it to ya, but Social Security will not be there in the same fashion that it is for present day retirees unless we fix the system. Now we have to understand that the system is broken and you can argue about the year. You can argue about the exact year but there's gonna be, within most estimates—several years, there's gonna be more money goin' out than comin' in and, by—"

QUESITONER: "2041."

MCCAIN: "2041 there'll be no money left. We can't do that to you. What's our obligation? Isn't our first obligation to take care of future obligations of Americans? We've got to sit down, put everything on the table and we know that there are a set of options that we can go through and I know how controversial this part of it is with some people but if you wanna take some of your Social Security taxes and put it into an account, a small account, put it into an account with your name on it then I'm all for that and I'm astonished. I'm astonished at the resistance and anger that seems to come—it's not 'privatizing' Social Security.

"It's simply allowing people to take some of the taxes that they pay—that they pay and put it into an account with their name on it and then they can watch it. Finally could I tell ya that's not the solution but I do believe that might give you a little more comfort that you would have control over a small amount of your tax dollars that you put into it. Did you want to follow up?"

QUESTIONER: "Bush introduced something a few years back that got shot down. That seemed like a pretty good idea. Do you know what I'm talking about? I don't know all the details about it."

MCCAIN: "I think what happened was and, to his great credit, the President, after he was re-elected in 2004 said, 'Look, I've got some political capital here. I'll try and get Social Security reformed.' I think that was a laudable goal and I still praise it.

"I think that the issue got hung up on this issue of the private savings accounts rather—and we lost sight of the issue. I think what I will do as president is I'll have one chart and that chart will show how much money is coming into Social Security and how much is going out and where there's less money coming in than going out and where there's no money left and say, 'My fellow citizens, no one disagrees with this chart. Now let's put everything on the table and let's sit down and make sure that the next generation of Americans is able to have the same benefits that present-day retirees are.'

"It seems to me that if we are the great nation that we are, and I believe we are. Then our first obligation is to make sure that we don't lay a burden on you and your generation, which is incredibly huge in its proportions. I'll make it one of my top priorities; Social Security and Medicare reform."

Often labeled "the greatest generation," our senior citizens have seen a lot in their time. Many of them marched for equality beside Martin Luther King Jr., fought for justice with Bobby Kennedy, or answered a timeless call to service under President John F. Kennedy.

But now, many of them need help. They're concerned about Social Security or dealing with the maze of coverage for Medicare Part D. They're paying too much for prescription drugs and coping with rising costs on everything. More than anything, they're worried about the country they're leaving behind to their children and grandchildren.

Across New Hampshire, they're ready for new leadership. They're ready for the torch to be passed to a new generation to bring about change we can believe in.
