Hanlon's Razor offers up the following interesting item as explains what motivates bloggers across the blogosphere into posting content as they do (especially such who identify themselves as Liberal or Secular-Progressive):

Being a blogger is considerably more difficult than it seems at first blush, particularly whenever the site picks up and gets some visibility. To keep the site going with any kind of success, you have to write as often as possible, which means finding an endless stream of things to give a damn about.

So the best way to do that is to find a lot of stuff to get really, really pissed off at. For the most part, Bush's administration has provided a pretty excellent source of things to get me fired up. The campaign was even easier. It seemed like every half hour or so we'd have a horrifying statement from Sarah Palin or some boneheaded ad from the RNC. Easy pie.

Now though, I'm feeling a little empty. Oh sure, we've got it being confirmed (as though we didn't realize) that Gonzo et al misled the country concerning Iraq, there's a story about the United States not signing an article that calls for global decriminalization of homosexuality, and look, that auto bailout finally went through. On the surface, I should be shooting steam out of my ears.

Things feel different though. Part of it's the holiday season and I'm having a hard time getting wrapped up in politics when I'm putting up my Christmas tree and hanging lights outside. But beyond that, with the incoming Obama presidency and the likelihood of even a greater Democratic majority in Congress, there's this pervasive feeling that, no matter how much of a kitchen sink approach to screwing things up Bush takes in his last few weeks, things will be on the road to recovery soon.

Don't feel hopeful? Gates is calling for the closing of Guantanamo Bay. That guy who threw shoes at Bush is having wealthy families offer him their daughters in marriage. Even the fact htat Obama is finalizing his cabinet picks is encouragement that things will be smooth in January.

Patton Oswalt, one of my favorite comedians, once said that happiness was the foil of comedy. He said that it's hard to be funny when everything is going well, because he'd just gotten into a relationship and realized lines like "You know what helps when you've had a bad day? Snugglin'!" doesn't bring out a lot of laughs. Politics is the same way. When the "bad" stories don't seem to matter, and there's an abundance of good stuff on the horizon, it's hard to get motivated to write.

You might ask why, specifically, that is. Writers all have delusions of grandeur, and like to think that what we're doing will change the world. When the wind's blowing against you, it's not hard to work up the strength to fight it. When it's at your back, the temptation is to just relax and let it take you where you want to go. You might get hit with a pebble now and again or stumble on a log, but overall there's just too much optimism floating around to get fired up and rant.

...not that I won't find something.

Better words explaining the whole concept of blogging could not have been said.

===============================

Calm whisper of the praying which heighth of the celebration noise you inform: The Exaggerator (... and forget thou not The Exaggerator Collection)

As we look toward the new year, our economy is in crisis and our environment is in distress. What we need from our next president is a plan of action that simultaneously saves our planet from pollution and puts our economy back on track. What we need is a "green" solution.

Our guest on the next Meet the Bloggers is activist and environmental leader Van Jones, author of the best-selling new book, The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems. Jones is the founder and president of Green For All, a national organization dedicated to building an inclusive, green economy, strong enough to lift millions of people out of poverty. Jones proposes the creation of green collar jobs that do not require extensive degrees, but will allow our working population to be employed and have a more meaningful purpose in the workplace.

Tune in as Van Jones joins host Cenk Uygur, Chris Rabb (Afro-Netizen), and Simran Sethi (Huffington Post). This episode will be online with a live blog Friday, December 19, at 1pm ET/10am PT, and is available anytime after on MeetTheBloggers.org. In the meantime, here's what you can do to learn more about creating green collar jobs and saving the environment:

Can We Save the Planet and Rescue the Economy at the Same Time? -- Al Gore, Mother Jones

Your Top 20 Econumdrums -- Solved! -- Ben Whitford, Mother Jones

9 Christmas Presents You Can Give Your Mother...Earth -- Tara Lohan, AlterNet

Lifting the "Body Burden": How to Fight Toxic Exposure and Keep Chemicals Out of Your Home -- Simran Sethi, Huffington Post

Attend the Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference in Washington, D.C.

I am very proud to post this piece from our show 'Meet The Bloggers' (www.meetthebloggers.org) because it is not only our first all Spanish segment, but it also touches on a very important issue, which is the death penalty. Violence in Mexico rises by the day making people fear for their safety every time they step outside their homes. I hate to see how my beautiful country has become infested by corruption, and is now better known for its organized crime and kidnappings rather than for it's history, scenery, and culture. I too fear for my loved ones who live among such chaos, and have lost a relative due to corrupt government leaders. We have all discussed whether there is truly a solution to fix our home, or if it has become hopeless. The ones who have the power to do something about it have become the same ones who allow this madness to continue. The death penalty may seem like a step towards a solution, but in such a Catholic country, it is also a topic of controversy. Religion aside however, we cannot expect to stop killers by becoming killers ourselves, and in this segment, Axel Woolfolk explains why. Watch and please pass along to everyone you know. Re-post on your MySpace bulletin, blog, Facebook, and anywhere that might reach people and encourage them to think, unite, and do something!

The death penalty is dying. Fewer death sentences are being pronounced and fewer are being pursued, as prosecutors find America’s juries increasingly uncomfortable with the failures in the system.

Seeing that 130 innocent people have suffered being charged, tried, convicted and sentenced to death in the last 35 years only to be exonerated and freed ultimately, jurors are less likely today to condemn another to die.

In 2000, Governor George Ryan of Illinois found that his state had executed 12 people in the 23 years since their death penalty was reinstated, but in the same period had exonerated 13. Stunned, Ryan, a self-described death-penalty-supporting conservative, declared a moratorium on state killing and established a bipartisan commission to examine and fix the system.

Finding his legislature unwilling to follow the commission’s recommendations by the end of his term, Ryan studied each case and shocked the political world by releasing four additional men he found innocent and commuting the remaining 167 death row prisoners to life without parole.

In this progressive era, isn't it time for the U.S. to abolish the death penalty? Doesn't everyone know by now the death penalty doesn't work as a deterrent and costs taxpayers more to prosecute than life imprisonment without the possibility of parole? It's uncivilized, ineffective, and inhumane.

This week on Meet the Bloggers, we're discussing the death penalty with actor Mike Farrell -- television's B.J. Hunnicutt on M*A*S*H* -- who has worked for social justice and human rights for more than 40 years. A lifelong opponent of the death penalty, Farrell is president of Death Penalty Focus. He joins show host Cenk Uygur and Liliana Segura, the Rights and Liberties blogger for Alternet.

Together, they will dismantle the many myths about the death penalty:

Myth: Death by lethal injection is painless and humane.

Myth: The death penalty provides "closure" to families of victims.

Myth: The death penalty is enforced only after all efforts for appeal have been exhausted.

Myth: The death penalty is faithful to the Constitution.

We'll also talk to blogger Bryna Subherwal about Amnesty International's Global Write-a-Thon, now in progress. Plus, we'll learn about the state of the death penalty in Mexico from special correspondent Axel Woolfolk, as well as the hypocrisy of using the Bible to justify the death penalty from Brave New Films blogger Jonathan Kim.

A consumer consumes -- but if we call the act of consuming consumption, shouldn't the person who does the consuming be a consumptive? Consumption is a disease. Nicole Kidman's character was consumptive in Moulin Rouge. She died. Think about that next time you are stricken with consumptive urges.

Watch the Meet the Bloggers episode from last Friday and help us take on unchecked consumerism. We can have a happy holiday with out making an unhappy life for other parts of the world.

From Reverend Billy, this week's guest on a Meet the Bloggers dedicated to responsible shopping.

Three New York headlines the day after Black Friday, "Hell-Mart," and "Frenzy" and "Death by Shopping." The temp worker Jdimytai Damour's face is smiling in a little oval frame in the corner. Then in the articles there are quotes from scholars and experts who make what has happened something we can understand, normal, not to be avoided.

We promise you Jdimytai that the professors of Consumerism won't normalize the terror of your last moments. This is the frenzied blur of greed that we all carry inside and wonder about. It's the Consumerism tumor-rumor -- in us but incubating at an unforeseen rate. And things happen that make us money, that we buy, that we helplessly watch rise from our buying -- like the Iraqi War, like the warming ocean. We Consumed it, we know we did. The purchases are so greased now, the plastic slides so easily -- how do we pull out of the blur?

I read that there was a Magnavox flat-screen DVD player on sale at the Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, Long Island, available on Black Friday only, for $147. That is the deal that waits behind Jdimytai Damour. There he stands at the electronic doors, looking out at us. We stand in the darkness, pushing out with our elbows, spying the shiny packages up the aisles. We are a distorted America standing in the pre-dawn darkness. We have turned our Pursuit of Happiness into this desperate feeling. Jdimytai watches us. We push on the glass.

Jdimytai Damour, we will slow down! We will stop shopping!

The recent Black Friday tragedies at Wal-Mart in New York and Toys "R" Us in California may finally help break the spell of mindless consumerism and rampant commercialism. We're taking up that cause this week on Meet the Bloggers with Rev.

Some of my fellow Kossacks got their knickers in a twist the other day over the news that David Gregory's set to become the new host of NBC's Meet the Press. Why the outrage? Well for one thing, they can never forgive Gregory for dancing with the devil, aka "MC" Rove. Plus, as one unkind Kossack noted, "I think he looks like he's from Planet Of The Apes" (admittedly, the photos offered as evidence made a compelling case).

Why not Chuck Todd? Better still, Rachel Maddow, patron saint of progressive wonks?

Look, I worship the luminous Rachel just as much as the next lefty blogger, but when are you guys gonna wake up and start sleeping in on Sunday? Why waste another precious hour of your life watching all those inside-the-Beltway bozos compete to see who can offer the most ossified observations, the stalest sound bites? (I make an exception for Donna Brazile, for whom God created the DVR.)

Get with the program -- Friday is the new Sunday. You've got Left, Right, & Center on KCRW, and now there's Meet The Bloggers, live every Friday at 1 pm Eastern. Meet The Bloggers is an online video show from Robert Greenwald's Brave New Foundation, dedicated to providing a forum for "unconventional political opinion and analysis." It's got the talking heads you actually want to hear from, the folks just beyond the scope of our myopic old media.

As a nutrition professor, I am constantly asked why nutrition advice changes so much and why experts so often disagree. Whose information, people ask me, can we trust? I’m always tempted to say, “Mine, of course,” but I understand the problem. Yes, nutrition advice is complicated by scientific arguments, the vested interests of food companies, and compromised government regulations. But basic dietary advice has been the same for 50 years and is not in dispute. I summarize it as “eat less; move more; eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains; and avoid too much junk food.” Michael Pollan says the same thing more succinctly: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

If dietary advice seems more complicated than that, it is surely because of the effects of rising rates of obesity on food companies. Food companies must sell products to stay in business; they must promote “eat more.” But obesity is the most important public health nutrition problem these days, and the solution to obesity is to “eat less.” This puts public health in conflict with food company business needs.

Obesity is on the rise and Type 2 diabetes cases nearly doubled in the last 10 years. For the first time in decades, the life expectancy of children born in this century is actually lower than their parents. What's the number one culprit in this crisis? Food. Meanwhile, food safety is spotty. The U.S. lacks a comprehensive "farm to table" food inspection process. That's why the Centers for Disease Control estimates there are 76 million cases of food borne illness each year!

What we eat is making us sick! To find out why -- and what we can do about it -- join food scientist Marion Nestle this Friday on Meet the Bloggers.

Our Lieberman Must Go campaign is gaining Joe-mentum! Over 1,600 people have already made a call to their Democratic Senators, requesting they take away Lieberman's plum Homeland Security Committee chairmanship this Tuesday, when Dems will gather behind closed doors to determine Lieberman's fate.

The press is also taking notice. Our own Communications Director Leighton Woodhouse explained what Lieberman Must Go is all about to The Connecticut Post:

"This is not about retribution or vengeance...This is about the fact that Lieberman has been very clear that his world view and agenda are contrary to the vision that Obama has espoused."

The reality is that Lieberman spent the recent election actively campaigning against Democrats, most notably Barack Obama. But as Leighton suggested, stripping Lieberman of his committee chairmanships is not about exacting revenge. Lieberman has careened to the right on both foreign and domestic policy issues. He has stood with McCain on everything from the Iraq War to fear-mongering about Iran to offshore drilling, and he has represented everything the GOP stands for by speaking at the Republican National Convention. Rewarding him with a powerful committee chairmanship would be, as Sen. Bernie Sanders has said, "a slap in the face of millions of Americans who worked tirelessly for Barack Obama and who want to see real change in our country."

Norma Rae, starring Sally Field in an Oscar-winning performance, is one of the best movies about unions you'll ever see. It's the godmother of films about impassioned single moms who stand up to sexism and uncaring corporations to demand workers rights and corporate accountability. Erin Brockovich, Charlize Theron in North Country, I'm looking at YOU.
Field plays Norma Rae, a 31-year-old single mom living in a small southern town in 1979. She works in a textile mill under terrible conditions with little to look forward. But one day, a union organizer played by Ron Liebman arrives and inspires her to organize the mill workers so they can demand a living wage and fair treatment.

Catch Meet the Bloggers Fridays at 1pm ET/10am PT.

It's a new day for American workers. With Barack Obama as President and Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate, we have the chance to pursue a more progressive agenda. So what's first on the list for the unions who helped put President-elect Obama and all those Democrats in office? How about The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), which passed the House last year but was filibustered to failure by a Republican Senate.

EFCA could effectively restore the middle class in our country. It would close the ridiculous gap between Fortune 500 CEOs making an average of $6,153 an hour and the majority of workers earning an hourly federal minimum wage of $6.55. The question is whether President Obama will make good on his support for EFCA by passing this much-needed legislation during first 100 days. And what are the challenges EFCA faces from anti-union businesses like Wal-Mart?

This Friday on a Meet the Bloggers, join Anna Burger, secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and chair of the international labor federation Change to Win, as we discuss EFCA's passage during Obama's first 100 Days. Burger will talk with show host Cenk Uygur and blogger Todd Beeton (MyDD) about how EFCA can revitalize our nation's middle class.

The people have spoken! A record-setting 130 million people turned out to vote in yesterday's election, in which Barack Obama made history on a Democratic tidal wave of victory.

Polling suggests voters came out in record numbers because of growing concerns over the economy, jobs, healthcare, energy, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Clearly, the Obama administration and the new Democratic majority in Washington have a chance to make profound changes in our lives stretching from Wall Street to Main Street. But where should they begin?

On this Friday's Meet the Bloggers, we'll examine this question and more with Jonathan Alter, Newsweek senior editor and contributing correspondent for NBC. This is the seventh election Alter has covered for Newsweek, and he'll bring his unique perspective to the discussion. Alter is also the author of the national bestseller, The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope. He'll talk about how Roosevelt restored Americans' faith in democracy and put the country back to work during the Great Depression, as well as the challenges and opportunities Obama faces during his first days in office.

Joining Alter and host Cenk Uygur will be blogger Marcy Wheeler (FireDogLake). Plus, we'll have a special video post from Brad Friedman (The Brad Blog) about what went right, what went wrong, and what voters did to fight back at the polls.

Check out some of the related articles below and participate in the live blog conversation with FOX Attacks blogger Jonathan Kim, Friday at 1pm ET/10am PT on Meet the Bloggers. Tell us why YOU voted the way you did and what you're expecting come January 21st!

Newsweek Conventional Wisdom Watch -- Jonathan Alter, Newsweek

President Obama: This Proud Moment -- William Greider, The Nation

OK Barack, Time to Hit the Ground Running -- AlterNet

Obama Wins and Redefines Real America -- David Corn, Mother Jones

The Most Unlikely President -- Ezra Klein, The American Prospect

Mandate Watch: Bellweather Races/Initiatives to Watch Below the Presidential Contest -- David Sirota, Campaign for America's Future

The White House 2: Where You Set the Nation's Priorities -- Jim Gilliam, Brave New Films
