CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad read the statement this morning during a news conference, aired live on C-SPAN, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy defends his term "fascislamism," claiming modern-day islamic fundamentalist movements to have roots in European fascism of the 1930s. Lévy argues that condemning fascism on one hand while tolerating muslim fundamentalism on the other is a form of racism in reverse.

-----

One of the world's leading intellectuals revisits his political roots, scrutinizes the totalitarianisms of the past, as well as those on the horizon, and argues powerfully for a new political and moral vision for our times - ALOUD at the LAPL

This program is part of the Los Angeles Public Library's ALOUD speakers and authors program.

Bernard-Henri Levy is a philosopher, journalist, activist, and filmmaker. He was hailed by Vanity Fair magazine as "Superman and prophet: we have no equivalent in the United States." Among his dozens of books are American Vertigo, Barbarism with a Human Face, and Who Killed Daniel Pearl? His writing has appeared in a wide range of publications throughout Europe and the United States. His films include the documentaries Bosna! and A Day in the Death of Sarajevo. Lévy is co-founder of the antiracist group SOS Racism and has served on diplomatic missions for the French government.

http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/08/how_to_redeploy.html

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's recent call for a phased U.S. troop withdrawal presents an opportunity for the United States to reclaim the strategic initiative in Iraq and the Middle East by beginning a responsible redeployment of U.S. troops. Yet there remains significant disagreement and confusion concerning the time necessary to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq.

On August 11, The Center for American Progress hosted an event to release an updated version of "How to Redeploy: Implementing a Responsible Drawdown of U.S. Forces from Iraq." The report, which takes into account recent developments on the ground, demonstrates that an orderly and safe withdrawal of all U.S. forces is best achieved over an 8- to 10-month period.

Marwan Muasher, former Jordanian Ambassador to Israel and to the United States, argues that the next U.S. President must act quickly if he wishes to influence the stalled Arab-Israeli peace process.

-----

Marwan Muasher on "The Arab Center: The Promise of Moderation."

Is there any hope for moderate voices in the Arab world? Many international leaders and scholars agree that compromise and centrist policies will help to broker peace and stability in the Middle East, but religious and political extremism has been growing.

Muasher served as Jordan's first ambassador to Israel and as ambassador to the U.S. He will discuss the importance of and the challenges facing moderates in the Arab world - The Commonwealth Club of California

Marwan al-Muasher is a Jordanian diplomat and politician. After having served as the first Jordanian ambassador to the state of Israel after the 1994 Peace Treaty and as ambassador to the United States, al-Muasher was the Jordanian foreign minister from January 2002 until October 2004. At that time, he gained the post of deputy prime minister in a cabinet reshuffle which was designed to continue the process of reform and the shrinking of the bureaucracy.

He was the deputy prime minister of Jordan in Adnan Badran's cabinet from October 25, 2004 to November 28, 2005. He was at the Jordanian Senate until March 16, 2007, when he joined the World Bank as senior vice president of External Affairs. He has written a book called The Arab Center which will be released on the May 9, 2008.

(April 24, 2008) Former president Jimmy Carter meets with the leadership of Hamas in Syria. The meeting brings swift and harsh condemnation from the Bush administration and Israel. Even the U.S. presidential candidates question the move. But a defiant Carter shrugs off the criticism, accusing Washington and Tel Aviv of missing an historic opportunity for dialogue. The meeting is largely overlooked in the United States.
