I have performed this Woody Guthrie musical lecture for over 30 years. I always end with this piece, and despite any tricks I use to try to fool myself, I wind up feeling the words and being moved to tears by the end of it. One of a handful of songs that make an incredibly personal yet universal statement about the devestating impact of injustice and greed.

Another of Guthrie's indictments of ruthless capitalism, it is a brilliant answer to the far-wrong's faux flaps over workers deemed "illegal." My spoken introduction to this piece at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0gNvsdCCxA&feature=related

includes a discussion of Chapter 25 from Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and the corporate greed that manipulates the "market" while workers starve.

This video contains testimony on a raid in Springfield, Massachusetts, by Caroline Murray the director of the Alliance to Develop Power.

On April 7, 2008 a recently formed national commission examining raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents held its second regional hearing in the Massachusetts State House.

The hearing in Boston is part of a series of regional public meetings that the commission is holding to explore the execution, implications and ramifications of workplace immigration enforcement on local communities. The commission will also look into claims that ICE has engaged in violations of the 4th amendment. After a thorough investigation, the commission will produce a public report that highlights its findings and makes recommendations about how the system should be reformed.

I came across an article today about a fellow DREAMer named Griselda Lopez Negrete. No need to go into details about her story, since she too came into this country as a child without intention to break the law.

However, the way USCIS found her to be without status is very interesting. During an interview for her aunt, Griselda volunteered to translate for her aunt. At some point, the immigration officer asked Griselda about her own status, and deportation proceedings ensued.

However, what strikes me about her case is that she was somehow allowed to return. Usually, a ban applies after turning 18 years of age. According to this article, Griselda would have faced a three year ban. When she attempted to reapply at the consulate in Ciudad Juarez for permanent residency, the immigration officers interviewed her. They asked her why she needed to come back to the United States and they allowed her to do so.

I really am curious about her words to the officers. I will try to get in contact with her and see if we can interview her.

I am the only person I know who has an equally inexplicable crush on Seshomaru, an Anime character and Trace Adkins, the country crooner. Looking at me, you'd never guess that I am both an avid cartoon lover and CMT viewer. Then again, there are a lot of things many would have a hard time believing about me. For instance, when my carefully planned epidural failed to numb me a few months ago, I was left in agonizing pain and terror, yet, I gave birth to a happy 7 pounder without tears or theatrics, however, I am still so afraid of the dark that the night light next to my bed is more of a security blanket for me than it is to monitor my baby. But if there is one thing my friends and neighbors would never conceive or even believe about me, it's the fact that like Showtime's Dexter, I too have a secret identity. Hidden deep within my suburban mother and part time college student cloak, is a dreamer.

I came to the US from Senegal, West Africa when I was fourteen and I will never forget the first time I saw New-York City. It looked like a bejeweled ring and as the plane hovered above, I was sure that it was a perfect fit. I was right! I didn't speak English but, my parents enrolled me in school. They wanted me to have the opportunities they wanted but could only dream of as children. As expected, I excelled. When graduation rolled around and college acceptances came, I was livid to find out that I couldn't join the ranks of my college bound friends: I was an Alien. Without a green card, social or driver's license, the prognosis was grim. It still is. But I won't let it stop me from reaching my American dream: the anchor's desk at CNN.

Essential Fact #1: I woke up at 7:29 AM.

Once I opened my eyes, I knew exactly what I was going to do today.

I got up, showered, ate Cheerios for breakfast, and got ready for my 8:30 class. I then made this list to remind myself of today’s activities.

List of things to do:

work out at the gym

revise thesis chapter

eat lunch with William

study/research for second thesis chapter

concert choir rehearsal

study group meeting

All of these items show that I live a seemingly normal life. The next fact about me shows the biggest obstacle I cannot overcome alone.

Essential Fact #2: We are immigrants who were brought into this country by our parents as children, without choice.

And it’s something we think about on a daily basis. Some of my friends know this fact about me and they are always surprised. My former roommate asserted to me once: “You’re not Mexican.” For the thirteen years I’ve lived in the United States, I’ve passed as a normal American kid who loved school and who has goals for the future. I am determined to fulfill those goals. However, I can’t do this alone. I need to let other people know what my goals are so that they can advocate for me. Within the next two years, my goals are:

to learn a new language (I am undecided between Japanese or Modern Greek)

advice young students in my situation to look for other options after high school

to be an active participant in a church choir

to earn my MS Ed in Education

to become a resident of this country

I ask for your help to help me fulfill the last goal on my list. I can’t do this alone. I need people who want to see me succeed to advocate for me, to voice to our leaders that students like myself should be given the chance to contribute to America.

A difficult dilemma has arisen over African immigrants making their way to the Italian island of Lampedusa. In an effort to accommodate them humanely, authorities have built a new holding facility there. Al Jazeera's Karl Stagno-Navarra was given exclusive access to the centre, and found resentment to its building from among the island's residents.

Each year, tens of thousands of Africans decide to leave their homes in search of a better life.

They flee poverty and conflict to make the journey as illegal migrants, risking dangerous seas and being sent back home.

Al Jazeera's Gabi Menezes reports from Senegal on the dream of reaching Europe and how some have found it can go terribly wrong.
