The election of Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States was seen as a huge step forward in the fight for equality.

But according to statistics gathered by civil rights groups there's been a sharp rise in race-hate crime across America. Hundreds of incidents of violence and vandalism against ethnic minorities have been reported since Election day.

Michael Eric Dyson, named by Ebony as one of the hundred most influential black Americans, is the author of sixteen books, including Holler if You Hear Me, Is Bill Cosby Right? and I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King Jr. He is currently University Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University. He lives in Washington, D.C.

His most recent book is April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Death and How It Changed America.

QUESTIONER: "Sen. McCain, you're here talking about civil rights obviously in a predominantly black town but it's hard not to notice that many of the people here in the crowd are white. Does that indicate to you, is that an illustration of the challenge that you have in actually getting the message that you're trying to get across here actually across . . .?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "Actually, I was at dinner last night at, it was an organization that was formed a long time ago, people of both races who spend time together socially and work on common challenges, I have had long, varied experience with people from all communities and all ethnic backgrounds in America. I will continue to work. I am aware of the challenges and I am of aware of the fact that there will be many people who will not vote for me but I'm going to be the president of all the people and I will work for all the people . . . "

Ethnic Indians protest in Malaysia - 16 Feb 08

It is the second illegal demonstration in recent years by the Hindu Rights Action Force.

Shelby Steele examines the challenges that Barack Obama must overcome in his bid to become President of the United States in A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win. Having to cater to both black voters and white voters in what binds Obama, and his dilemma is that he achieved visibility more as a racial icon than as an individual. In his analysis, Shelby Steele discusses his own mixed race background, and he empathizes with Obama's inner conflicts even as he critiques him. He also identifies the two 'masks' that blacks wear in order to seek success and power in the American mainstream: bargaining and challenging, and he argues that Obama is too constrained by divisive racial politics to find his own true political voice - and proposes a way for him to break those bonds and find his own voice.

Shelby Steele is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and the author of The Content of Our Character and White Guilt, and a contributing editor at Harper's; his work has also appeared in numerous other magazines and newspapers - Cody's Books

Shelby Steele is the Robert J. and Marion E. Oster Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He specializes in the study of race relations, multiculturalism, and affirmative action. He was appointed a Hoover fellow in 1994.

Steele has written widely on race in American society and the consequences of contemporary social programs on race relations

In 2006, Steele received the Bradley Prize for his contributions to the study of race in America. In 2004, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal. Steele is the author of White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era and most recently A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win.

Sheba Foods, a Georgia based Wal-Mart supplier speaks up in the new book "Life with Wal-Mart: A Vendor's Story." In the book, Kunmi Oluleye details the most fascinating moments of a two and a half year journey being a mintory company selling ethnic food to Wal-Mart.

Oluleye writes:

"There were so many distractions, discouraging comments and events when it came time to write the book. What if the people I talk about, Ambassador Andrew Young and Mr. Jesse Jackson react negatively? What if Wal-Mart and Dun & Bradstreet have a temper tantrum? Can I deal with it? What if someone sues me for libel? What if other supermarkets blacklist me for fear that I might write about them?
It was difficult keeping emotions out of the book. I didn’t want to be portrayed as an irate black woman lashing out at Wal-Mart or the others that I talk about. I tried to remain as objective as possible in stating the facts. Chapters Three to Five were the most difficult to write, with Chapter Five being the most excruciating. It forced author to revisit painful memories."
