<p><p>From <a href="http://www.openleft.com/">Open Left's Matt Stoller</a>:</p><p>That's Mitt Romney calling McCain out on lying, following on Karl Rove's assertions that McCain has <a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/2008/09/14/karl-rove-says-mccain-obama-have-gone-too-far/">"gone too far."</a> This is starting to look coordinated, and Rove doesn't speak out of turn for no reason. Either there are some very angry conservative insiders knifing McCain or this is part of some dramatic PR ploy in which McCain will somehow be portrayed as a hero.</p><p>I don't know, it's a little spooky.</p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>From the "I never thought that would come back to bite me in the ass" department... During the Republican primary debate back in October 2007, John McCain said: </p><blockquote><p>"I am prepared. I need no on-the-job training. I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time. I wasn't a governor for a short period of time."</p></blockquote><p>Was he clairvoyant enough to be talking about his running mate Sarah Palin? No, he was actually belittling both Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani. And as <a href="../blog/52959-sarah-palin-stumped-on-the-bush-doctrine-during-abc-interview">Sam Stein points out</a> at HuffPo, both Romney and Giulini held their respective positions of governor and mayor <em><strong>longer</strong></em> than Palin. </p><p>Perhaps that explains why Palin <a href="../blog/52959-sarah-palin-stumped-on-the-bush-doctrine-during-abc-interview">was clueless about the Bush Doctrine</a> and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/patrick-barry/palin-contradicts-mccains_b_125819.html">contradicted McCain on Pakistan</a> during her ABC interview. Palin clearly doesn't have the experience to handle issues of national security or foreign policy, and McCain continues his campaign of contradictions and hypocrisy. </p></p>

Instead you try to relieve the tax burden on the American people, and boost our economy. If you listen to the Democrats debate, they're all talking about raising money, one way or another. Raising money through taxes, and the right thing to do is to keep our taxes down. I think it's fundamentally wrong that we tax people when they earn their money, tax them when they save it, and tax them when they die. So we'll kill the death tax once and for all. And I got a new savings plan. A new savings tax plan. For anyone making $200,000 a year and less, the new tax rate on your savings, that's capitol gains, interest, dividends, all your savings, will be absolutely zero. Let Americans save their money for their future as they like. We strengthen our economy also by keeping legal immigration alive and well, but stopping illegal immigration. </p>

<br />"I was on the radio this morning with New Hampshire Public Radio, and, um, it was pointed out that Senator McCain here said that his view was that, that those who come here illegally should get in the back of the line, and he was not in favor of a, of, of a special, uh, deal if you will for illegal aliens, and yet the bill he, he, he fought for that, that was the combined bill in Washington said, with its Z Visa, that everyone here illegally could stay here forever. Now he talks about citizenship and tries to change the subject, but that's not, that's not the, the point. The point is under his bill that he fought for everybody who came here illegally could stay forever. And, and, does he still believe that? Or does he not believe that? And, and likewise on taxation. Um, he says well now he's, uh, he's for making the Bush tax cuts permanent. Well, does he admit that he was wrong in voting against them before? Uh, you know, I, I'm happy to talk about times when I've been wrong, but I don't recall Senator McCain saying he was wrong to say that all illegal aliens should be able to stay here permanently or that he was wrong to vote against the Bush tax cuts. I think he was, on both counts."</p>

I can't imagine a circumstance under which I would pardon and release from prison a person who'd been convicted of multiple accounts of drunk driving... Likewise, twelve murderers being pardoned. That is something that I would also find very hard to do." </p>

<br />QUESTIONER: My husband is actually going to Iraq for the third time . . . I was wondering what you would do differently . . . </p>
<p>MITT ROMNEY: Thank you for your sacrifice [applause]. If there's any question about America, you just saw it right there. That's how we feel about our service men and women that are making a surge of sacrifice . . . I believe that what's happening right now is the right course for our effort in Iraq. I believe that Gen Petraeus has laid out a plan, is executing that plan well and we're seeing it successful in Iraq . . . the greatest threat, what could've happened in Iraq, is if al-Qaeda or Hezbollah, one of these terror groups had been able to establish a dominant position . . . that's what I feared most . . . and that's why I'm so pleased and proud of our service men and women who have done such a job over there to help move the Sunnis to work with us to help reject al-Qaeda . . . and because of our success, Gen Petraeus believes that we can start bringing our troop strength down . . . and the Iraqi troops will be able to play the front line roll . . .I ultimately believe all of the troops have to come home from Iraq. I'm not going to set a timetable for that to happen because I want people to know I'm not going to walk out . . . </p>

<br />QUESTIONER: . . . you just mentioned the fact that we're importing a third of oil . . . </p>
<p>MITT ROMNEY: It's actually 60% of our oil comes from foreign countries and it's a third of our . . . current account defecit . . . </p>
<p>QUESTIONER: . . . I've listened to a number of politicians and the one thing that I never hear is why aren't we developing the oil reserves that we have available to us. Certainly we're seeing some of our . . . adversaries . . . coming in and drilling for oil fairly close to our shores . . . if it isn't economically viable now, when will it be? I just don't understand how we can continue down the path that we're going without exploring some of the resources that we know are available to us.</p>
<p>ROMNEY: You said it well, I can't disagree with you. You know, we've talked for years now about the largest reserve that we're aware of, which is in ANWR, in Alaska, the people of the state of are very anxious to have developed. Time and again, they say, please come in and develop this . . . there's drilling in the outer continental shelf, for me that's very much part of the picture . . . I think that the president has to be not just the commander in chief or the communicator in chief and talk to the American people about the consequences of not developing our resources . . . if you don't want nuclear power and you don't want to drill for oil and you don't want clean burning coal, then what that means is $100 oil, then it's going to be . . .$3 a gallon then $5/gal. then to $8/gal. then $10/gal. and by the way that means it'd be pretty tough living around here. Heating your homes, it's $1500 for a winter, it's going to be $3000 and then $6000, those are the kind of consequences that show people . . . but we have to make those kinds of decisions today. A nuclear power plant doesn't get built in two or three years.</p>
<p>QUESTIONER: Does that mean that you're going to be advocating then that we do drill?</p>
<p>ROMNEY: Absolutely, absolutely. I am going to advocate that we drill for domestic oil on the outer continental shelf and in ANWR, we'll do that in conjunction with states . . . Alaska is the easiest. The people of the state want us to drill there . . . the Democrats are listening to extreme environmentalists who say no. Well, have they thought about the consequences of not developing any additional energy resources? . . . Look at the French. Well, the French are kind of a liberal people as we know . . . 80% of their power comes from nuclear power plants . . . </p>
