Coverage of Iraq that we’ve seen here over the past six months has been all about the surge. But in Baghdad over the weekend there was a different kind of surge. Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets to oppose a renewal of the Status of Forces Agreement, which would extend the US presence in Iraq for three more years until the end of 2012. For members of parliament the stakes are high. Provincial and national elections will be held next year and the US presence is highly unpopular throughout the country, excluding perhaps the Kurdish north.

The demonstration also clearly shows that Muqtada al-Sadr remains an enormously powerful figure in Iraq capable of mobilizing thousands of Iraqi people in opposition to the US occupation. A statement from al-Sadr read at the rally called on parliament to vote down the pact: “I reject and condemn the continuation of the presence of the occupation force, and its bases on our beloved land,” the letter said. Sadr called the pact “shameful for Iraq.”

No one writing in English today understands Iraqi politics better than Patrick Cockburn, the author of two recent books on Iraq: The Occupation and Muqtada: Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shia Revival, and the Struggle for Iraq. He joins us today to discuss the recent protests, the rise of al-Sadr, and if Americans are still misreading Iraq.

Fox News: Bragging Rights Does Not Earn An Emmy!

Fox News is not nominated for any Emmy. National Geographic is the only channel under the NewsCorporation to be nominated for an Emmy.

Instead of doing responsible journalism, the media has been on this "gotcha" game! Of course, America's most watched news network Fox News is leading the way to making our American news media quite a joke.

Oh, wait! Before we claim the "LIBERAL BIAS" label, let's review the facts.
Barack Obama, presidential candidate and senator from Illinois. On a tour of the Middle East, Europe and Asia, Senator Obama has been gathering support from many leaders. Of course, Fox News is not on the tour with senator. I guess, when the media covers Senator Barack Obama, we'll see him walk the "safe streets" of Baghdad in a bulletproof vest and have hundreds of military soldiers, two Blackhawk helicopters and at least one hour to meet the people in the city. Of course, last year April 2007, Senator John McCain was there and made his most embarrassing move by saying Iraq is safer, but went forth with a bulletproof vest and hundreds of military guards. That move was panned by the media. McCain proudly said that the media was his base! In March 2008, all the conservatives were in an uproar over two things. Jeremiah Wright and Senator Hillary Clinton's Bosnia gaffe, come to mind. Of course, with the Jeremiah Wright issue surfaced; the conservatives were all over it. They practically ignored Senator McCain's Iraq coverage because they were in dismay that he was their Republican presumptive nominee.

Senator Barack Obama, Congressman Robert Wexler, MoveOn.org, ColorOfChange, and rapper Nas are protesting Fox News [Bill O'Reilly, John Gibson, Juan Williams, Sean Hannity, and Michelle Malkin]. Once again, Obama may have "frozen" Fox News again? Can we say Madrassah, Madrassah or Barack Hussein Obama! Or can we say the "liberal media" once again? Whatever Fox News!

Robert Wexler, Florida Democratic congressman is the one who helped Dennis Kucinich draft the Articles of Impeachment on President Bush. The congressman is a "proud liberal" and has been taking on Fox News for many years. Bill O'Reilly sends his stalkerazi Geoff Jenkins confront Wexler. O'Reilly wants to "expose" Wexler for living in Maryland while being a representative of Florida. Ok, why don't we go after President Bush, Senator John McCain and many other congressmen for living?

Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco is under fire. Fox News blames him for deaths of a woman's family being killed by a gang member who is an illegal immigrant. Fox News is now claiming that San Francisco is a "sanctuary city" for allowing illegal immigrants immunity from U.S. Customs. I don't know the policy of San Francisco, but I can say that this has been longer than Newsom's term. Newsom is ranked one of the most popular mayors in the nation. Fox News is going after him and his constituents are not tolerating that!

Nas, a New York rapper was criticized by Bill O'Reilly after he was to perform at Virginia Tech University. The MoveOn.org group and ColorOfChange teamed up with the rapper to denounce the media. Nas released "Sly Fox" going after the network. Other rappers who were targeted by the network included Ludacris, Jay-Z, DMX, Jam Master Jay, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, Eminem, and rival rapper 50 Cent.

What we do... First denounce them as "Opinion Media". Keep reminding your conservative friends that Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren, Brit Hume, Geraldo Rivera, Alan Colmes, Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson, Brian Kilmeade, Bill Hemmer, Megyn Kelly, Jon Scott, Jane Skinner, Martha McCallum, Trace Gallagher, Shepard Smith, John Gibson, Chris Wallace, Neil Cavuto, E.D. Hill, Greg Gutfield, Julie Bandaras, Rush Limbaugh, Dennis Miller, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Juan Williams, Dick Morris, and Karl Rove are a piece of........! They are overpaid commentators who do not care about the truth, my video, and the millions of voices against this network. But guess what, there's going to be some retribution!

More and more voices are standing up against the corporate owned media. We will make Fox News sweat, and send a message to each network that the "games" are over. No more blind following, we are awakened!

Nas to Fight Fox on The Colbert Report Tonight

Yesterday, I wrote about rapper Nas joining ColorOfChange.org, MoveOn.org, and Brave New Films to tell FOX News to quit its racist attacks on the Obamas. Well this afternoon, Nas joined us in presenting a 600,000-signature petition to FOX's Manhattan HQ. Word on the street is that FOX refused to accept our petition, which isn't very surprising considering FOX is so set in its bigoted ways. However, The Colbert Report accepted the petition instead, and they're planning to feature Nas tonight on the show. Stayed tuned for that.

While we couldn't take the petition directly to FOX, we still managed to get our message across. 600,000 signatures attacted Nas to our cause, which in turn caught Colbert's eye. This only amplifies our message: FOX must stop injecting racism, prejudice, and fear into our political dialogue.

Rapper Nas Teams Up with Progressives to Fight FOX

Y'all know it's Nas yo! After slamming FOX News on his new album, Nas is teaming up with ColorOfChange.org, MoveOn.org, and Brave New Films to deliver a petition to FOX tomorrow in Manhattan at 2PM ET. The petition, which demands FOX stop smearing the Obamas and injecting prejudice into politics, has over 620,000 signatures.

Nas is getting a lot of applause from the blogosphere for grabbing the mic in this campaign and calling out FOX on its racist slander. And according to ColorOfChange.org executive director James Rucker, the applause is well-deserved.

"It is hard to find strong voices willing to step out and call out Fox for what it is—fake news that is harmful to public discourse and to Black America," Rucker told me. "Nas is doing what few are willing to do. It's risky for any musician, entertainer, or other artist to take on a corporate entity because ultimately it can cost them dollars or opportunities. Nas obviously sees the value in speaking the truth and using the stage he has to do it. It's a model for others to follow."

JOHN MCCAIN: "I'm talking about whether we have arrangements with Iraq, the same kind we've made with a number of countries. Some countries, such as Saudi Arabia, we left. There are other countries because of our relationship agreement, like Turkey, we stayed. It's a difference between countries, you all know that. But, Americans are happy that we're in Turkey. Americans are happy that we're in Kuwait. Americans are happy that we're in Korea, because they know that America as the world's superpower has to have power around the world. But what Americans are frustrated and saddened and angered by was the mishandling of the war which caused so much unnecessary sacrifice, and now we are succeeding...The Democrats, motivated by MoveOn.org who insulted our greatest general, General Petraeus want to pull out; and they want to declare surrender. And I'm not gonna stand for that. And as I've said before, I don't care what it costs me. I know what's right for America. I've been involved in every major national security challenge this nation has in the last twenty years. I have the judgment. They haven't. So I'll be glad to have that debate. But it's a false argument to say how long [the troops] can stay because [the Democrats, motivated by MoveOn.org] don't understand warfare. Warfare's got to do with victory or defeat and they want to declare defeat. I want us to continue..."
