-----

Neal Stephenson delivered a talk entitled The Fork: Science Fiction versus Mundane Culture at Gresham College.

Four professors discuss the origins of science fiction, its overlap with other genres and its developments over more than a century.

Neal Stephenson is the best-selling author of such novels as Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, and The Baroque Cycle. He is best know for writing science fiction (in the postcyberpunk genre) and his interests often lead him into investigations of society, mathematics, cryptology, currency and the history of science.

Bestselling Author Salman Rushdie discusses what he feels is a lack of great literature or other creative works about September 11, 2001.

-----

Born in Mumbai, India, Salman Rushdie is an outspoken novelist. After a decade working as an ad copywriter, Rushdie had a breakthrough with the publication of his second book, Midnight's Children. The book received critical acclaim and was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981.

His latest novel, The Enchantress of Florence, about a bewitching Moghul princess and her Florentine exploits with such historical characters as Machiavelli, is due out this June - City Arts & Lectures

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is an Indian-British novelist and essayist. He first achieved fame with his second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize.Much of his early fiction is set at least partly on the Indian subcontinent. His style is often classified as magical realism, while a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions, and migrations between the Eastern and Western worlds.

His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), led to protests from Muslims in several countries, some of which were violent. Faced with death threats and a fatwā (religious edict) issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, which called for him to be killed, he spent nearly a decade largely underground, appearing in public only sporadically.

In June 2007, Rushdie was appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to literature. In 2007, he began a five-year term as distinguished writer in residence at Emory University.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Celebrated documentary filmmaker Ken Burns gives his take on the use of music in movies.

-----

Ken Burns' most recent documentary film project, The War, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of more than 40 men and women from four quintessentially American towns - Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and Luverne, Minnesota - who experienced and helped to win the most extraordinary war in history.

Woven largely from their memories, the narrative unfolds as the war unfolded - month by bloody month, with the outcome always in doubt.

The film series explores the most intimate human dimensions of a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America demonstrating that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives.

From Pearl Harbor to the liberation of the concentration camps, the companion book to this fall 2007 PBS series, The War: An Intimate History, 1941-1945 by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns, includes all the iconic events as well as those of prisoners of war and Japanese American internees, defense workers and schoolchildren, and those who struggled simply to keep families together while their men were shipped off - NYPL

Ken Burns has been making films for more than thirty years. In 1981, Burns produced and directed his first film for PBS, the Academy Award nominated Brooklyn Bridge. His other films include Huey Long; Thomas Hart Benton; Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio; a trilogy including The Civil War, Baseball, and Jazz; Frank Lloyd Wright; Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony; Mark Twain; and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson.

Burns is currently producing and directing a six-part film series on the history of the National Parks which will air on PBS in 2009. He is also working on a history of Prohibition and an update to his 1994 epic Baseball.

His current film, which premieres in September on PBS, is The War with a companion book he co-authored with Geoffrey C. Ward entitled The War: An Intimate History, 1941-1945.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Author David Hajdu discusses 1950's-era self-censorship in the comic book industry.

-----

"The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America" with author David Hajdu.

Comic books, not rock-and-roll, created the generation gap. (They also spawned juvenile delinquency, crime, sexual deviance, and things of such depravity that were we to name them, our note wouldn't get through your "adult content" filter.)

Long before Elvis appeared on Ed Sullivan from the waist up, long before Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin, long before James Dean yelled "you're tearing me apart," teachers, politicians, priests and parents were lining up across from comic book publishers, writers, artists, and children at bonfires and Senate hearings decrying the evil that was The Ten-Cent Plague.

In what is the third in an informal trilogy about American popular culture at mid-century, Hajdu (Lush Life, Positively Fourth Street) radically revises common notions of popular culture, the generation gap, and the divide between "high" and "low" art - Cody's Books

David Hajdu writes a monthly column for The New Republic on music and popular culture. He is a contributor to The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Magazine, and Vanity Fair. Mr. Hajdu was the general editor of Entertainment Weekly from 1990 to 1999, editor-at-large for the New York Times Magazine Group from 1985 to 1990, and the editor-in-chief at Video Review from 1980 to 1985.

Mr. Hajdu is the author of Lush Life: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn, published in 1996 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux and Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina, published in 2001 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux.

Both of his books were named finalists for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Additionally, Mr. Hajdu has been published in the anthologies: O.K. You Mugs: Writers on Movie Actors and Best Music Writing 2000.
