This clip shows Nottingham University Ph.D research student, Rizwaan Sabir, talking about his brief arrest by the police as a suspected "terrorist". He is researching the nature of political Islam and downloaded an Al Qaeda manual from the US department of Justice web-site as part of his research. He emailed the manual to a friend, Hicham Yezza, asking him to print it off on his behalf. This was reported to the police. His friend is now being deported to Algeria as a result. In this clip, he explains what happened during this absurd example of Islamophobia.

The Young and Conservative Blog at The Washington Times had an interesting response to The New Yorker cover called "The New Yorker and Archie Bunker". The gist of their analysis is the following:

Wlady Plesczynski, longtime editorial director of The American Spectator, blogged that the cover was "too clever by half, taking some generally known unserious tropes and having a field day with them, as if at some level the magazine actually thought such a caricature had some basis in fact." That is exactly right. If the cover were an attempt to pre-empt and ridicule conservative attacks on Obama, two things went terribly wrong in that thinking:
This will only embolden - it certainly won't scare - conservatives. Now that a liberal publication has fired the first salvo, one far worse than any that Republicans have conjured up to date, it's far more likely that we've entered Open Season than any chance of conservatives shying away from playing the race angle.
Most Americans are, in the words of a former colleague, "only negligibly literate." While the inside-the-Beltway types will see the cartoon for what it is - a poorly done jab at the right-wing - I doubt that the people in "Flag City, USA," many of whom actually do believe that Obama is, or was, a Muslim, will see the nuance. More likely they'll just take it as proof that see, I knew that Obama he was some kind of Muslim; my friends were right all along - even The New Yorker said so.

I agree with that this is satire done with the skill of dog writing poetry. However, I differ on the underlying reason why this article cartoon cover failed so miserably.

A Snub Can Cost You Votes

In the latest chapter in Senator Barack Obama's fight against the political smear machine, the news media is generating a buzz about a "snub" of two Muslim women at the Detroit event. This event had former vice president Al Gore endorsed Obama. Volunteers have told Hebba Aref and Shimaa Abdelfadeel not to sit near the candidate. Jack Tapper from ABC News has reported the story.

Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota [DFL]), an Obama supporter had scolded the Democratic presumptive nominee over the handling of two women. Ellison urged the senator to apologize personality to the women. The women accepted the apology, and urged Obama to not snub the Muslim community.

But with that said, is it going to be a problem for Senator Obama?

My advice to the senator: "Forget what [the critics] say! I would never snub anyone who is supportive of me! You would need not worry about those who are "not familiar" with you! You win some, you lose some!"

Senator Obama has dealt with rumors about being a "secret Muslim" and "radical" since the start of his presidential bid.

Ellison is the first elected Muslim to represent Congress. Recently Andre Carson (D-Indiana) became the second Muslim elected to Congress. He is an Obama supporter also. For more information on the congressmen see their congressional web pages: ellison.house.gov and carson.house.gov .

And just for the record, Senator John McCain snubs people too. McCain had scolded Congressman Rick Renzi (R-Arizona). I went to CNN/YouTube Republican Debate at The Energy Center in St. Petersburg. The senator and former contenders Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, and Mitt Romney snub their supporters in the backroom. In the backroom, I managed to shake hands with former governor Mike Huckabee, Congressmen Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul. I manage to meet Florida governor Charlie Crist (a McCain supporter), St. Petersburg mayor Rick Baker, Janet Huckabee, and Senator Mel Martinez.
