<br />Naomi Klein's speech at the National Conference for Media reform was not included on the conference website. subMedia contacted Free Press, the organizer or the conference, to ask why Klein's speech could not be found online, and the person explained that Free Press is a non-profit organization and that I should reefer to the disclaimer on their website which reads:</p>
<p>"Despite our best efforts, we feel that some of our speakers encroached on electoral space during their remarks at the National Conference for Media Reform. It is not in our interest to disseminate these recordings. We are reviewing all of our video content and will add that which we determine to be free of electoral statements to this page."</p>
<p>I don't quite understand how these things work, but whatever. Two sources have told me the reason Free Press did not include the speech was Klein's criticism of Barack Obama. It would be pretty fuckin lame if it were true. </p>
<p>But fuck it, I got a hold of a copy of the speech and here it is.</p>

<p><p>I have a confession to make and I hope it doesn’t change your opinion of me as a serious blogger but it has to be said; I have a wicked crush on Tom Hayden. Now, before you click away and dismiss me as some empty-headed gossip blogger – hear me out. I don’t hand crushes out freely, I have very high standards. Recipients of said crushes are typically ambitious, straightforward and fearless types who never back down from a fight. They have mastered the use of wit over fists, pen over sword, and creativity in lieu of the familiar. </p><p>With criteria like that, is it even possible that I wouldn’t have a crush on Tom Hayden? <em>New York Times</em> book reviewer Paul Berman called Tom Hayden “the single greatest figure of the 1960’s student movement”. But I know him as – yes my crush, and also the journalist that writes pieces that make me want to learn more about the world in which I live. The person that makes profound statements in everyday conversation, the member of the Chicago 7 that works several yards away from our office and pops in for coffee from time to time. The former state senator who faced constant protests from conservative groups, and one half of the conversation that is <a href="http://bravenation.com/"><em>This Brave Nation: Tom Hayden and Naomi Klein</em></a>. </p><p>Tom and Naomi talk about everything from Martin Luther King, Jr. to their upbringings to violence in Iraq to their experience at WTO 1999. I know I’ve said this before, but <a href="http://bravenation.com/episodes.php">you really cannot miss this episode</a>. Invite your friends over and watch it together! With his latest <a href="http://www.myspace.com/johncusack">films</a> on the Iraq war, Cusack is standing outside Hollywood with a TV above his head broadcasting his political movies calling on the public to wake up and "Do Something." </p><p><a href="http://www.myspace.com/johncusack">John Cusack</a> began working on his new film <a href="http://www.firstlookstudios.com/films/warinc/"><em>War, Inc.</em></a>, which <a href="http://movies.aol.com/movie/war-inc/27991/main">premieres</a> in LA and New York May 23, about a year into the US occupation of Iraq. From the moment US tanks rolled into Baghdad, Cusack was a voracious consumer of news about the war. He took it deadly seriously, regularly calling independent journalists and asking them questions as he sought as much independent information as he could. Watching the insanity of the erection of the Green Zone and the advent of the era of McWar, complete with tens of thousands of "private contractors," Cusack set out to use the medium of film to unveil the madness. He wanted to do on the big screen what independent reporters like Naomi Klein, Nir Rosen and Dahr Jamail did in print. Over these years of war and occupation, Cusack has become one of the most insightful commentators on a far too seldom discussed aspect of the occupation: the corporate dominance of the US war machine. </p> <p>Cusack is no parachute humanitarian. While he continues to do the Hollywood thing with big budget movies, he is simultaneously a fierce un-embedded actor/filmmaker who has been at the center of two of the best films to date dealing with the madness of the Iraq war. Without big money sponsors and the backing of powerful production companies, Cusack has spent a lot of his own money on these projects.</p></p>

<p><p>This film and book discuss the CIA's experimentation with using electric shock to break people down. Yet, the more important point of these works is that a broader "shock" to the systems of a people as a whole, like say 9/11, can have the kind of impact the CIA was searching for in their tests, one that breaks down a whole society and makes them so fearful they are open to nefarious suggestions.</p><p>I am sure none of this sound familiar, does it? This is very powerful stuff that can explain how a traumatized society may act, and may just explain to you why <a href="http://therealrudy.org/">a certain former Mayor of New York</a> mentions 9/11 4.75 times per sentence.</p><p>In any case here is a description in Naomi Klein's words--Watch the video!:</p><blockquote><p>"My publisher came up with the idea of a "web trailer" but we ended up with a powerful piece of cinema instead. I never saw the film as a promotional tool for the book, or even an adaptation of it. I always saw it as a companion piece to the book, as a way to enter the same subject matter -- shock therapy, disorientation, torture -- on a different, much more emotional level. The central idea of the book is about the use of shocks to exploit people, whether an individual in a torture cell or an entire society. That is such a visual, physical idea that I felt limited by what I could do with mere words on a page -- I could argue and document but I knew that a true artist could find ways to take that argument and reach people on a deeper level. That's what Alfonso did. </p><p>When I finished the book, I sent it to Alfonso because I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists -- including Jonás Cuarón who directed and edited -- to make The Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything felt fated." </p></blockquote></p>
