Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger gives his perspective on warfare and anti-war dissent.

-----

Henry Kissinger discusses war and more with Peter Robinson as part of the Hoover Institution's interview series, Uncommon Knowledge.

War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?

Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.

Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.

In this environment, Kissinger says our leaders need to present a clearer and more educated vision of the American role in the world - Hoover Institution

Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Former U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith revisits pre-war claims on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, arguing that Saddam Hussein was much closer to acquiring these weapons than has been claimed by anti-war advocates.

----

Douglas Feith's remarkable War and Decision: Inside the Pentagon at the Dawn of the War on Terrorism is the first book written by a former Bush Administration insider to offer a dispassionate and documented account of the reaction to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that led to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime.

War and Decision, as the Wall Street Journal has noted, is the first "revisionist history" of the Iraq war. It challenges the conventional wisdom that holds the belief that in a rush to war a cadre of neoconservatives politicized intelligence findings.

Henry Kissinger says of the book, "The fullest and most thoughtful statement of the Pentagon thinking prior to and in the first stages of the Iraq war. Even those, as I, who take issue with some of its conclusions will gain a better perspective from reading this book."

To explore Feith's account, Hudson Institute held a discussion with three former officials who were active participants in the decisions of the day: Paul Wolfowitz, Visiting Scholar with AEI, former President of the World Bank, and former Deputy Secretary of Defense; Peter Rodman, Senior Fellow with the Brookings Institution and former Assistant Secretary for Defense and Adviser to the National Security Council; Dan Senor, former Senior Advisor to Presidential Envoy L. Paul Bremer III, Administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority. This discussion was moderated by Hudson Institute CEO, Kenneth Weinstein - Hudson Institute

Douglas J. Feith served as the Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy for United States President George W. Bush from July 2001 until he resigned from his position effective August 8, 2005.

Feith's official responsibilities included the formulation of defense planning guidance and forces policy, United States Department of Defense (DoD) relations with foreign countries, and the DoD's role in U.S. Government inter-agency policymaking.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Author and political scientist John J. Mearsheimer argues that neoconservative and pro-Israel lobby groups were both greatly influential to the U.S. decision to go to war in Iraq.

-----

John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt discuss "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy."

What is at the heart of the special relationship between the United States and the state of Israel? Does Israel truly represent a strategic U.S. asset in the Middle East? Are the two nations really partners in the same "War on Terror", with the same threats up against them, and the same interests at stake?

Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt had become well-known authorities in our understanding of contemporary international relations theory, security, and policy long before their collaboration on The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. Atlantic Monthly approached the pair in the fall of 2002 to research the depth of influence of the pro-Israel lobby on U.S. policy. By the time they returned with the results of their research, the magazine's editor had decided not to go ahead with the piece, and was not even interested in a revision. At the prompting of an American academic peer, they decided to submit the article to the London Review of Books where it was finally published in March of 2006.

Mearsheimer and Walt argue that if there ever truly were significant strategic (i.e. balance of power considerations during the Cold War) and/or moral (i.e. common Judeo-Christian and democratic values) grounds to justify the unique level of American support afforded the Jewish state, they have long been exhausted. Has this unwavering support made Israel a liability in U.S. foreign policy? And, does this special relationship threaten, rather than enhance, American security in the Middle East, in the world, and at home? - World Affairs Council of Oregon

John J. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and the co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1982.

Retired four-star general and former Democratic Presidential candidate Wesley Clark criticizes the course of U.S. foreign policy in the wake of September 11, 2001.

-----

Wesley Clark discusses "A Time to Lead."

Wesley Clark sought the presidency during the 2004 elections, seeking to bring a less hawkish perspective to the White House. After the campaign, Clark did not end his crusade for what he sees as a better America, one that supports his vision of a responsible foreign policy. He believes that hard work, leadership and determination will ultimately turn the country around. - The Commonwealth Club

Wesley Clark is a retired four-star general of the United States Army. Clark was valedictorian of his class at West Point, was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford where he earned a master's degree in economics, and later graduated from the Command and General Staff College with a master's degree in military science. He spent 34 years in the Army and the Department of Defense, receiving many military decorations, several honorary knighthoods, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Author and journalist Reese Erlich theorizes on what would happen were the U.S. to stage a hypothetical invasion of Iran.

-----

Reese Erlich talks about "The Iran Agenda: The Real Story of U.S. Policy and the Middle East Crisis."

Erlich believes the U.S. government is planning to subvert the Iranian government and lie about it to the American people. He traces the troubled history between the two countries. He discusses how the U.S. has funded guerrilla raids and terrorist bombings inside Iran. Erlich is the author of "Target Iraq."

Reese Erlich began his career in journalism in the 1960s as an investigative reporter for the magazine Ramparts. He reports regularly for NPR, CBC, ABC (Australia), Radio Deutsche Welle and The World, as well as several newspapers. He was a contract correspondent for Common Ground Radio, a weekly public radio show covering international affairs. Reese co-authored the book "Target Iraq: What the News Media Didn't Tell You" with Norman Solomon (2003). He has produced many radio documentary series, including Perspectives in Jazz, The Iran Project and The Russia Project.
