Voting activist Maya Enista examines how personal technology and the internet are changing political organizing, and may be encouraging greater youth participation in politics.

-----

On July 22nd 2008, The Century Foundation (TCF) hosted the second installment in its summer 2008 public policy lunch series for New York City interns with a forum, "The Incredible Youth Vote: Will the Youth Vote Have the Strength to Decide the 2008 Presidential Election?"

TCF gathered a panel of experts to lead an interactive discussion with nearly 100 young people from the NYC area on the potential political power of the youth vote, and the various legal and social factors that election year after election year keep this demographic of voters from actively engaging in the political process.

Forum speakers included, Tova Wang, Vice President of Research for Common Cause and Democracy Fellow at The Century Foundation; Justin Rockefeller, Co-founder and National Program Director of GenerationEngage, Maya Enista, Chief Executive Officer of Mobilize.org, Mark Hugo Lopez, Associate Director of the Pew Hispanic Center; and Ben Adler, Staff Writer for Politico - The Century Foundation

Maya Enista is chief executive officer at Mobilize.org, and has worked in both the Washington, D.C., and California offices as the chief operating officer. She has been active in public service since she was an undergraduate at Rutgers University, focusing mainly on voter empowerment and youth civic engagement.

In addition to her work with Mobilize.org, she serves on the steering committee for the November 5th Coalition,.an all-partisan alliance committed to civic partnerships that address our democracy's biggest challenges. (The coalition is named for the day after the election in 2008, when a new chapter of America's civic history begins.) She also runs the 2100 Fund (originally founded by Atlas Service Corps Founder Scott Beale, and now a project of Mobilize.org), which throws "parties with a purpose" and raises money for diverse youth civic engagement campaigns throughout the country.

In the first part of this article, I explained some of the most common phrases associated with Web 2.0. Here are some more explanations that should help you cut through the jargon.

Read/Write Web

The internet is no longer a place where users simply view content. Web 2.0 means that users can contribute and publish all kinds of content, thus the read/write web.

RSS

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a web content syndication format that allows you to publish and distribute web content. RSS feeds allow updates to be delivered to subscribed users' desktops.

Social Networking

This generally refers to activities on Web 2.0 websites such as MySpace and FaceBook. These websites allow you to connect and communicate with new and existing friends and colleagues, share information, join groups and more.

Establishing and maintaining an active presence on social networking websites has emerged as an effective way to promote products and drive traffic to websites. These and other Web 2.0 technologies are changing the way we approach internet marketing. In this article we look at how to make the most of social network marketing.

There are many terms for this form of web promotion, including social media optimization and social media marketing. And there are also different types of websites and methods that can be used.

As with any form of internet marketing, successful social network marketing takes patience, know how, and some hard work. Social network websites are essentially online communities where people can meet, communicate, and share ideas. How you should approach your marketing campaign on these websites will depend on the size and nature of your business.

Many large companies and corporations have already established a presence on these websites. However, for smaller companies and home-based web businesses a more subtle approach is probably the better option. Rather than blatantly marketing your product, you should try to become a member of the community by making friends and joining relevant groups on websites like Facebook and MySpace.

Social psychologist Sam Gosling examines what an individual's online networking profile can reveal about their personality, using websites such as Facebook and MySpace as examples.

-----

Sam Gosling on "Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You."

Does what's on your desk reveal what's on your mind? Do those pictures on your walls tell true tales about your character? Is your favorite outfit about to give you away?

For the last 10 years psychologist Gosling has been studying how people project (and protect) their inner selves. By exploring our private worlds (desks, bedrooms, even our clothes and cars), he shows not only how we showcase our personalities in unexpected ways, but also how we create personality in the first place, communicate it others and interpret the world around us - The Commonwealth Club of California

Sam Gosling, Ph.D., is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been widely covered in the media, including The New York Times, Psychology Today, NPR, and "Good Morning America," and his research is featured in Malcolm Gladwell's Blink. Gosling is the recipient of the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution. He lives in Austin, Texas.

News Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch compares social networking websites MySpace (owned by News Corp) and Facebook, arguing that the two sites are different enough that they are not necessarily targeting the same audience.

-----

Producing quality video content for the web has never been as easy as it is today. Recording equipment and editing software is now widely available, at reasonable prices, so nearly anyone can make the jump to producing content.

The phenomenal popularity of YouTube proves that web video is a great way to increase website traffic or market products directly. Many companies have gained massive exposure to millions of potential customers by uploading and sharing video content.

However, with millions of videos circulating the web, you need to produce something that's interesting, informative, or entertaining to get noticed. As with most marketing techniques, it takes persistence and a willingness to adapt to feedback.

Preparing to create video content will take more time than creating text only content. That's because video can't be edited real time, like text.

Online videos offer internet marketers one of the best platforms for engaging an audience and building a solid clientele.

This innovative new marketing medium allows marketers to communicate with their viewers on several different levels using music, visual imagery and visual text.

Online video allows you to reach out to the global audience with a minimal investment, thus increasing your ROI tremendously. Moreover, it requires no technical expertise to set up or use. Adding a basic video to your web site only requires that you have access to a computer and a webcam or a digital camcorder.

Of course, knowing how to edit the video and add special effects by way of graphics, music and specialized text would give you the competitive edge over other businesses that use online videos for marketing.

Although there are no restrictions as to the kind of video you may produce for the purpose of marketing, remember the main aim of the video is to generate more business by keeping the customer engaged. With this in mind, it's critical that the video should be riveting enough to hold the viewers attention and yet it should remain relevant to your area of business.

For the uninitiated, network design can be a daunting subject with its seemingly mystical jargon and ever changing protocols. However, once you have a basic knowledge of the equipment involved, myths about networking will be dispelled. The following will walk you through the basic building blocks of a computer network.

While it's possible to create a network by simply connecting two computers together with an Ethernet cable or wireless router, most modern networks are more complex. Most corporate networks connect more than ten computers together along with internet connections and network peripherals.

Modems

Most networks will share an internet connection. Traditionally, modems were designed for dial-up connections but cable/DSL modems are now the norm. Newer cable/DSL modems can handle up to 10 Mbps Ethernet connections, although most internet service providers won't match the higher speeds. Those corporations with higher bandwidth needs require multiple modems with multiple internet connections.

When it comes to networking, the future is wireless. As the technology develops and transfer speeds increase, it looks increasingly likely that wireless will replace Ethernet in most home and small business networks. In this article, I look at how far wireless networking has come and at what the future holds.

There is little doubt that wireless is the way of the future. In fact, it has already made its way into many homes and businesses. If you own a laptop with wireless capabilities, you already know all the handy wireless hotspots in your local area. While you still have to pay for some of these services, increasingly business like cafes and restaurants are offering free Wi-Fi to attract customers.

Wireless is also becoming the medium of choice for the average home network. Most if not all internet service providers (ISPs) offer wireless routers with their packages for a few extra dollars. Also, you will be hard pushed to find a desktop or laptop computer manufactured in the last couple of years that does not have wireless capabilities. So, wireless is both cheap and easy to set up in the home.

The same is true for small businesses. The average wireless router's signal will cover enough area for most small offices. Wireless networking also cuts out the cost of installing and maintaining Ethernet cables. And, of course, it is much neater.

Internet access is an essential for any small business to compete effectively in today's business world. It allows ease of communication within a business and with customers, clients and other businesses.

Some of the main advantages of internet access for small businesses include:

Communication - Employees and customers can use email, instant messaging and even internet calling to communicate quickly and easily.
Information - The internet and the wealth of information it provides is quickly and easily accessible to employees and can help boost productivity.
Remote access - Employees can access the network and/or their workstation from anywhere using mobile devices such as laptops and PDAs.
Increased exposure - Few companies do not have their own websites nowadays. Establishing and maintaining an online presence should be a priority for all businesses.

Any small business that has more than one computer should have a network. A network allows all computers to connect and share data between each other, share an internet connection and share peripherals such as printers and fax machines.

The average small business network will require devices to connect to each other and access the internet. While many businesses still use wired local area networks (LANs), wireless networks are becoming increasingly popular. However, many modern businesses combine the two. Based on this model, the primary features of the network should be as follows:

Wired Local Area Network (LAN) - This will connect all desktops, peripherals and servers. It's possible to make the connection via a hub. However, the best option is to use switches where information is only sent to the intended recipient on the network. Switches use MAC—hardware—addresses to identify where information should be sent. Because devices are connected by Ethernet cable, transfer speeds are generally very fast.

If you are setting up a business network security should be one of your chief concerns. Any good small business network will be protected by both hardware and software firewalls that should be configured by a trained networking professional. However, further steps should be taken to protect both the network hardware and the valuable information that it stores.

Electrical power

Perhaps one of the greatest threats to computer networks is power surges and voltage spikes. In fact, it is not unknown for computers, servers and peripherals on entire networks to be destroyed by power surges when they have been left unprotected.

Because of this, some form of surge protector is essential that will prevent voltage spikes from damaging equipment. This should either block the surge or short the system so the voltage spike does not reach the equipment.

Most networks will also use uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to prevent brief power cuts from shutting down the network. These can ensure that the network stays up and running for anything for a few minutes to a number of hours depending on the equipment.

Technology price tags have come down drastically in the last decade. But the challenge still lies in finding adequate money to successfully implement initial technology capital investments and ongoing maintenance activities.

The good news is that funding organizations are more likely to sponsor robust technology proposals. Grant organizations understand that technology touches every aspect of our modern lives.

The bad news is that throwing together a hardware and software list— based on wants — and calling it a proposal is no longer a viable option. Grants, especially technology grants, are based more on strategic objectives. You must have goals and an evaluation process that helps you measure your progress.

To increase your technology funding odds, heed the following five tips.

Technology is an Ongoing Cost

No technology proposal should be written as a one-time investment cost. As consumers, we understand that we'll have to replace our computers, phones, and cars at some point. It's the same in business.

Technology should be a standard budget item. Show funding sources that you can think long-term by including ongoing technology costs in your overhead account.

Winning technology grants requires more than filling out an application. Grants are increasingly tied to long-term strategies that demonstrate initiative in reaching the grantor's mission.

If you want to be first in line for technology funding you must understand how to allocate and manage your funds. Grasp the following four technology expenditure areas and you'll be ready to submit well documented and well reasoned proposals.

Hardware

Hardware is usually the primary focus in technology funding. It includes computers (workstations), printers, scanners, and fax machines. If your organization is large enough, you might have different servers, backup systems, or extensive networking equipment.

Because of typically large initial cash outlays, hardware will include 50% or more of the total project costs.

Software

Software includes the programs you need to run your hardware. Typically, software will comprise 15-20% of your total hardware budget. Be mindful of upgrade costs versus new costs. Look for lower priced opportunities if you buy software licenses in bulk.

For general office equipment like printers and scanners, software will usually be included in the hardware cost. For thoroughness, go through your hardware list and determine if software is needed. Or if an upgrade rather than an outright buy will do.

From government agencies to private philanthropic groups, technology grant opportunities exist at nearly every societal level.

But there's a difference between writing a grant proposal and writing a winning grant proposal. The difference is in the preparation.

Below are seven essential elements that you must master to write and get a technology grant.

The Proposal Summary

This section is an overview of your project. At this point, you should have already made sure that existing proposals don't already exist for similar projects. This section helps you nail down your primary goals.

How do you get the most out of your proposal summary? Write it last. This will ensure that you've summarized all the key points in your core proposal. Crucial points to include are a need summary, other funding options, and an impact statement should funding not be met.

The Introduction

You will need to introduce your organization, key players, and organizational goals. The introduction should also be specific to your project's funding. Grant funding entities shouldn't have to wade through thick introductions which don't have relevance to your funding.

In business, gaps are defined as the difference between what an organization needs and what it currently has—or the difference between where they are and where they want to be. These gaps exist on nearly every level within an organization—personnel, marketing, legal, and support.

What makes a technology gap unique is that it never truly goes away. As new technologies emerge, businesses become more aware of where they lack (the gap). Organizations move forward as their technological realities continually chase technological needs.

Technology gaps can only exist if 1) an organization is measuring business requirements and 2) is defining technological solutions for those business requirements.

Business Requirements

Business requirements are those goals which a company attempts to meet. These goals can be internal or external although most businesses focus on external goals.

For example, a business might set a goal to answer all customer emails within 24 hours. Right now, the business might have employees write down the date and time when they receive a customer email. Then write down the date and time when they respond. But, the business needs a way to track this information automatically via an automated, system process.

The business has defined their requirement—respond to emails within 24 hours—and their need—to track this process automatically. Now, a gap exists between a need, or requirement, and the current reality.

Word-of-mouth advertising is the defining element of Web 2.0 advertising. It's all about making new connections and expanding your internet presence via social networking.

Web 2.0 advertising through social networking gives you the much needed proximity to your clients, increases the frequency of social contact and changes the dynamics between you and your customers. It creates structured internet communities and puts like minded people in touch with others, where once it was impossible. Social networking, which is viral in nature, keeps the community growing and extends your reach indefinitely.

Social networking sites not only help people interact with each other but also allow them to share likes and dislikes, music and photos as well as video and TV clips. This provides businesses with a perfect platform to advertise and promote their products or services.

You can get a better feel for the market by getting to know more about your target audience including the kind of products or services they prefer. This in itself can save you loads of time, effort and money spent advertising to the wrong target audience

Enhancing both FREEDOM & RESPONSIBILITY for everyone...
There are practical solutions. But we haven't even been looking for them!
The "System" isn't some untouchable, immovable and magical wall that we can't affect. It's a collection of very real sub-systems which we can and must attend to. Representative Government requires not only values and the vote (both essential), but it requires systems re-enabling neglected lines of opinion/motivation flow between citizens and leaders.
Time to move your heads out of this box of powerlessness you've gotten yourselves into!
