Hurricane Gustav Slams Louisiana: A Report from Jordan Flaherty in New Orleans

Hurricane Gustav slammed the US Gulf Coast just west of New Orleans on Monday but has now weakened to a tropical depression. According to the National Hurricane Center, Gustav remains a flood threat as it moves over central Louisiana. Forecasters also warn that another storm, Hurricane Hanna, could hit the Gulf Coast by midweek. [includes rush transcript]

Nearly Two Million Flee Gulf Coast as Hurricane Gustav Approaches

Nearly two million people have evacuated their homes as Hurricane Gustav heads towards the Gulf Coast. The Category 3 storm is expected to make landfall by midday today, with winds at 115 miles per hour. The evacuations come just days after New Orleans marked the three-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Gustav has also jeopardized this week's Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Republican officials are already scaling back the RNC program. We go to New Orleans to speak with independent journalist, Jordan Flaherty. [includes rush transcript]

Ray Nagin, the New Orleans' mayor, orders a mandatory evacuation before Hurricane Gustav hits, calling it "the mother of all storms".

The evacuation order, which will not be physically enforced by officials, will start with the city's low-lying West Bank starting at 1300 GMT on Sunday, followed by the East Bank at 1700 GMT, Nagin told reporters at City Hall.

Hurricane Gustav has already swept across the Caribbean killing over 80 in Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Now the storm has swelled to a category 4 storm and the US National Hurricane Centre says it could become a category 5.

Hurricane Gustav is currently lashing Cuba and forecasters say it will cross the Gulf of Mexico and hit central Louisiana on Tuesday with the same force as Hurricane Katrina, exactly three years ago.

Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.

Trouble the Water follows a couple from New Orleans' Ninth Ward and their return home two weeks after the hurricane. It begins with footage shot by the couple, who documented the approach of the hurricane and the moment the floodwaters began to rise.

Three Years After Katrina

Saturday will be the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's initial formation over the Bahamas. When she washed over Mississippi and Louisiana six days later, on Aug. 29, 2005, she breached critical levees that were supposed to protect New Orleans. Hundreds drowned.

I recently interviewed John Barry -- author of Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America and The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History -- a New Orleans resident who now serves on the Levee Board. We discussed the current situation in New Orleans three years on and the reasons the rest of the country bears some responsibility for New Orleans becoming so vulnerable to storms.
