Our nation's most serious foreign policy expert, the "brilliant" Thomas Friedman of <em>The New York Times</em>, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/14/opinion/14friedman.html?hp">declared</a> our latest new war:</p><blockquote>The next American president will inherit many foreign policy challenges, but surely one of the biggest will be the cold war. Yes, the next president is going to be a cold-war president -- but this cold war is with Iran.</blockquote>So congratulations to us. <p>After years of desperately searching, we've finally found our new Soviet Union.</p><p>Nay-saying opponents of the New War (those who Tom Friedman, <a href="http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9904E1D8153EF931A25750C0A9659C8B63">in March of 2003</a>, dismissed as "knee-jerk liberals and pacifists") may try to point out that Iran is a country whose defense spending is <a href="http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/spending.htm"><strong>less than 1% of our own</strong></a>; spends less on its military than countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden; has never invaded another country in modern history, and could not possibly threaten us, but those are just small details. Iran is our new implacable foe in Tom Friedman's glorious, transcendent struggle -- which, in 2003, on NPR, he called "the beginning of World War III . . . the third great totalitarian challenge in the last, you know, 60 years," and which he today defines this way (featuring an amazingly disingenuous use of parenthesis):</p> <blockquote>That is the real umbrella story in the Middle East today -- the struggle for influence across the region, with America and its Sunni Arab allies (and Israel) versus Iran, Syria and their non-state allies, Hamas and Hezbollah. As the May 11 editorial in the Iranian daily Kayhan put it, "In the power struggle in the Middle East, there are only two sides: Iran and the U.S."</blockquote> <p> </p></p>

But in the Times' introduction to Wright's letter, the newspaper calls Wright's text "fiery". </p><p>Sigh. I have lost count of the number of times I've heard this man referred to as fiery in the Big Media lately. The use of this word is no mistake.<br /><br /></p></p>

Gotta love the irony that Davis says "there's no limit to what the [Liberal Left] will spend." And didn't those smear merchants at <em>The NY Times</em> <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/25/opinion/25fri2.html">endorse McCain</a> once upon a time? How quickly we forget. </p></p>

<p><p>A very interesting piece <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/29/business/29sorkin.html?pagewanted=1&amp;ref=business">in The New York Times</a> about those warriors for egalitarianism, private equity executives. </p><p>Here is the part I found most interesting:</p><blockquote><p>Last week was a good time to check in on the state of private equity, because most of the private equity bigwigs - including Mr. Rubenstein, <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/k/henry_r_kravis/index.html?inline=nyt-per" title="More articles about Henry R. Kravis.">Henry Kravis</a> of <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/kohlberg_kravis_roberts_and_co/index.html?inline=nyt-org" title="More articles about Kohlberg Kravis Roberts &amp; Co.">Kohlberg Kravis Roberts</a>, Stephen A. Schwarzman of <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/blackstone_group/index.html?inline=nyt-org" title="More information about The Blackstone Group.">Blackstone Group</a>, Leon Black of Apollo Management, Glenn Hutchins of Silver Lake and Jonathan Nelson of Providence Equity - were gathered in one place: Davos, the site of the annual <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/w/world_economic_forum/index.html?inline=nyt-org" title="More articles about World Economic forum">World Economic Forum</a>. </p><p>On the one hand, there was a distinct feeling at Davos that private equity was not on the hot seat - at least not as Topic A among the world's economists and financiers. This time it was the <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/s/sovereign_wealth_funds/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="More articles about sovereign wealth funds.">sovereign wealth funds</a> that got most of the scrutiny. "We're no longer the object of so much scorn and attention," said Mr. Rubenstein one morning, as he trudged through the snow, wearing a North Face ski jacket over his banker's pinstripes. </p><p>On the other hand, back here in the real world, private equity - and all it represents - remains as contentious as ever. Just days before arriving in Davos, Mr. Rubenstein was swarmed by some 50 protesters during a speech at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. </p><p>The protesters, who were escorted out of the auditorium by the police, had come to protest Carlyle's acquisition of a nursing home company. Among other things, they were championing efforts to establish a union at the company - which of course would impair Carlyle's efforts to cut costs if it were successful.</p><p>As a protester with a megaphone challenged him, Mr. Rubenstein shot back - sarcastically - "I think a remedial English course would be helpful." (He later called the protester and apologized.)</p><p>When Mr. Rubenstein was finally able to begin his speech again, he began by saying that the Golden Age of private equity - a phrase coined by Mr. Kravis at the peak of the buyout boom - had turned into the "Purgatory Age, where we're going to have to atone for our sins a bit." </p></blockquote><p>First of all, the fact that the face of the Bush playground known as the Carlyle Group (not to mention the bin Ladens in the past), David M. Rubenstein, is admitting that the buyout bosses have committed "sins," tells you that the bad pr they are getting from people like <em><a href="http://warongreed.org/">us</a></em> is registering. They obviously realize all their unadulterated greed is starting to become well known and a liability.</p><p>Second, if there are protests at Wharton, then they really are in trouble. I went to Penn and did a minor at Wharton. It is Establishment Central. Donald Trump went there. I haven't seen him wearing flowers in his hair while driving his hybrid lately. </p><p>If these guys are being protested by 150 people at Wharton, then you know the jig is up. And they are scrambling to protect themselves. </p><p>So, while we appreciate your change in rhetoric, Mr Rubenstein, it is well past time to display it in your behavior (see nursing home and union if you don't get my drift).</p></p>

Kristol also is a <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,2120,00.html">regular contributor</a> to Fox News' </strong>Special Report with Brit Hume.</blockquote>What <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Miller_(journalist)">wonderful taste</a> the New York Times has. I must remember to not pick up one of their papers one day.</p>

Here's the rest: </p><blockquote><p>Blackwater spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell said <strong>the dog had attacked one of Blackwater's bomb-sniffer dogs</strong> while a security team was sweeping the compound for explosives.</p><p>"The K-9 handler made several unsuccessful attempts to get the dog to retreat, including placing himself between the dogs. When those efforts failed, the K-9 handler unfortunately was forced to use a pistol to protect the company's K-9 and himself," she said in an e-mail to Reuters. </p></blockquote> <p>Couldn't they have just wounded him? <p><p><a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/10/19/justice-department-sought_n_69098.html?view=print">Murray Waas</a> is reporting that the Department of Justice wanted 2 New York Times reporters to plead guilty to criminal charges for leaking classified information about the warrantless wiretaps.</p><p>But their case was too thin. So now they're trying to compel testimony from them.</p><p>That means that if Mukasey is confirmed, one of the first things he'd have to do is try to get them to testify.</p><blockquote><p>"<strong>It sure would have changed the subject if there was a guilty plea</strong>," said one senior government official. "<strong>The story line changes goes from an Attorney General under fire who is alleged to have lied to Congress to 'our national security and ability of the government to protect us against Al Qaeda </strong>was seriously compromised by people acting criminally.'" </p></blockquote><p>Memo from White House: When in doubt, repeat the words 9/11 and/or Al Qaeda as often as possible to make your point. </p><p>Memo from us: We don't buy it any more. </p><p>Bill Keller, editor of the New York Times:</p><blockquote><p><strong>"I'm not sure journalists fully appreciate the threat confronting us,"</strong> Keller wrote. "The Times in the eavesdropping case, the Post for its CIA prison stories, and everyone else who has tried to look behind the war on terror."</p></blockquote><p>Memo to Keller: Where were you when Miller pushed for the Iraq war? </p><blockquote><p>Keller asserted that <strong>"there's sometimes a vindictive tone in the way [administration officials] talk about dragging reporters before grand juries </strong>and in the hints that <strong>reporters who look too hard into the public's business risk being branded traitors." </strong></p></blockquote><p><em>Sometimes?</em> <em>Sometimes</em> a vindictive tone?</p><blockquote><p>He warned that journalists are possibly "suffering a bit of subpoena fatigue. <strong>Maybe some people are a little intimidated by the way the White House plays the soft-on-terror card."</strong></p></blockquote><p>Certainly not Congress. The Dems show backbone on a daily basis. They stand right up to the Presi--- Sorry. That was what I dreamed last night. Back to reality:</p><blockquote><p><strong>"Whatever the reason, I worry that we're not as worried as we should be."</strong></p></blockquote><p>Memo to Keller: Maybe you're not, but I've been worried enough for all of you since January 2001. </p> </p>
