Gingrich: Inflating Your Tires Will “Enrich Big Oil”

It’s shocking to me how Republicans are allowed repeatedly to spout the most outrageous lies, yet are never held accountable and their reputations remain unscathed. There are big whoppers, like Bush’s tax cuts helping the middle class, the link between Al Qaeda and Iraq, Iraq’s WMDs, increasing fuel economy in cars will hurt the auto industry, and offshore drilling will immediately decrease gas prices. Then there are smaller but no less outrageous ones, like this recent idiotic statement from Newt Gingrich as he continues his heroic quest to prevent people from properly inflating their tires to save money on gas:

GINGRICH: Well, I got a very funny e-mail from a retired military officer in Tampa who pointed out that most tire inflation is done at service stations and you pay for it. And it’s actually a higher profit margin than selling gasoline. So Sen. Obama was urging you to go out and enrich Big Oil by inflating your tires instead of buying gas.

Get that? Newt Gingrich, who is supposed to be a “serious” and “knowledgeable” political expert, is claiming that spending 50 cents a month to inflate your tires will “enrich Big Oil” more than spending $60 A WEEK buying gas. As ThinkProgress notes, the reason why there’s a higher profit margin on air than on gas is because, if you haven’t noticed, AIR IS FREE AND PLENTIFUL — you’ll always have high profit margins if the product you’re selling is free.

Last night on Fox News, host Sean Hannity and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) returned (as they often do) to Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) recent suggestion that Americans inflate their tires properly in order to save energy costs.

Seeming to outdo his previous false attacks on this issue, Gingrich claimed that Obama’s idea is actually encouraging Americans to “enrich Big Oil” because selling air has “a higher profit margin than selling gasoline”:

Drill Here, Drill Now is a cute little slogan that the Oil Lobby has come up with and gotten our Republican Politicians to parrot. The problem is that the oil companies already have 40 million acres of oil drilling rights and they are just sitting on it counting their money. Why should we give them more land to hoard when we know damn well they don't want to flood the market and make oil cheaper.

This happened a little while ago, but Sean Hannity’s hypocrisy is so astounding that I couldn’t let it go.

As you saw in our latest video, FOX ATTACKS! Michelle Obama (nearly 500,000 views and #1 most viewed News & Politics video this month!), the folks on FOX are simply shocked, SHOCKED! that Michelle Obama would dare say she thought America is a “downright mean” country where more and more people are struggling to get by. FOX had endless hours of “analysis” on this subject, claiming it proved the Obamas were elitists, radicals, socialists, America haters, etc. “What country is she living in?” asked disgraced Abramoff asshat Ralph Reed, as if no one in their right mind (even a black person!) could even entertain such a notion. In fact, I believe it’s FOX's official policy that Michelle Obama’s name may never be uttered without saying “not proud of her country” and “downright mean.” Of course, notorious racist Hannity led the indignation fiesta, claiming a statement like Michelle’s is a wound that would doom the Obama campaign (but don’t tell the Germans).

So, in the name of Fairness and Balance, you’d expect Hannity to have a fraction of the same indignation towards Phil Gramm, John McCain’s top economic advisor (and stinking rich UBS bank chairman), when he proclaimed that America is a “nation of whiners” and that the suffering of millions of Americans under the Bush economy is simply a “mental” problem. You’d expect that — but that means you are unfamiliar with the depths of hypocritical asshattery that is Sean Hannity. From C&L:

HANNITY: I’ve met people that grew up in tyranny. I knew people that grew up in the former Soviet Union for fear of speaking out against their government. Never had an opportunity to pursue their dreams…In this country, maybe we do, is there some truth to the fact, maybe we do whine too much. Maybe we don’t to appreciate this gift we have of freedom. Maybe we don’t take advantage of, maybe too many of us look to the government to solve every problem we have, Health care etc…

So let me get this straight — if your government ruins the nation’s economy, you should shut the hell up because you have the freedom to criticize your government? Even Newt Gingrich couldn’t believe Hannity could be so tone deaf and idiotic. I could believe it.

So which would you rather have: a president whose wife thinks the country is downright mean, or a president whose chief economic advisor thinks the problems ravaging the US (and the world) economy are imaginary and people suffering its effects should stop whining?

Yesterday on CBS’s Face the Nation, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich — who is currently advising Republican senators about how win in 2008 — praised Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) as “spectacular,” and said he would be “far and away the best candidate” to be Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) vice presidential running mate.

Just before Gingrich came on to praise him, Jindal himself spoke on Face the Nation, where he invoked conservatives’ most-hated term, “political correctness,” to assert that teachers should teach intelligent design in the classroom:

I don’t think students learn by us withholding information from them. … I want them to see the best data. I personally think human life and the world we live in wasn’t created accidentally. I do think that there’s a creator. … Now the way that he did it, I’d certainly want my kids to be exposed to the very best science. I don’t want any facts or theories or explanations to be withheld from them because of political correctness.

Jindal insisted the federal and state government should not “impose” their views on local school districts, effectively giving school boards carte blanche to teach scientifically inaccurate ideas, just like Kansas did in 2005, when it rewrote standards to cast doubt on evolution.

If there is any doubt that FOX is the Republican/Bush propaganda machine, take a look at how they’re going after Scott McClellan in the wake of his tell-all book about the Bush administration, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception. Having received their orders, FOX hosts and pundits have begun attacking McClellan and conjuring scenarios to explain how a former loyal Bushie would dare to be (gasp!) repentant about the lies he told, unwittingly or not, and would want to expose the propaganda campaign that led America into the worst foreign policy debacle in its history.

ThinkProgress has assembled a compilation of motherFOXers weighing in on McClellan with their patented deceptive blend of opinion/commentary/fake reporting, including:

Brad Blakeman, former White House staffer: “A publisher got to him and he waved a lot of money, I’m sure, in front of him and he took the bait and that is just unfortunate.”

Trent Duffy, former White House deputy press secretary: “It’s like he just turned over the pen to a publisher and signed his name at the bottom and got a big fat book contract.”

Bill O’Reilly: “McClellan is in it for the bucks, keeping in mind his publisher also distributes books by George Soros and other far left people.”

Ari Fleischer, former White House press secretary: “And I talked to Scott yesterday and Scott did tell me, that his editor, this is Scott’s words, ‘tweaked some things closely in the last few months.’ And I think what did happen, Bill, was the book was pretty much done and set and Scott went back in, and I think his editor wrote a lot of it.”

Newt Gingrich, former House speaker: “Here is this guy who want to sell books. He’s cut his ties to the administration and his publisher says, ‘Now look, you can spice it up a little bit.’”

Steve Doocy: “Apparently the publisher did some tweaking. How much? That’s a really good question.”

Wait a minute, Fleischer, Gingrich and Doocy — are you actually claiming that a publisher might hire an editor to EDIT a book? My stars! I may swoon. I also heard a rumor that McClellan typed the book on a liberal Mac laptop, too.

It’s amazing to me that the Bush administration is freaking out about things that everyone already knows to be true: the Bush administration waged a powerful propaganda campaign to fool the press and the rest of the country into supporting the Iraq war; Karl Rove is a liar whose sausage-like fingers were all up in every shady scheme waged by the Bush administration; the Bush administration exhibited mind-boggling incompetence dealing with Hurricane Katrina; etc. etc. etc. Really, what on earth does the Bush administration think it’s defending? “No, it’s not that we’re liars — we’re just incompetent idiots who have no idea what's happening around us.” Yeah, that’s much better.

Newt Gingrich "sees bleak Republican outlook but keeps potential 2008 candidacy alive," Washington Wire reports. "The ex-speaker... rates Clinton's chances at Democratic nomination 'in the high 90s' and Democrats' chances of winning general election at 80%."

"Aides will spend October gauging financial support. Gingrich says a viable race would require at least $30 million in pledges, considering Romney's deep pockets. Though most Republicans expect him not to run, some believe he'd step in if Thompson flops."

Meanwhile, the Cox News Service reports Gingrich "would lean toward starting the race with a nationally televised address -- if he decides to run... That decision will come around Nov. 1."

I'd be tempted to send him money if I had any.

Republican Newt Gingrich is so unimpressed with his own party's 'chaotic' line-up of candidates to replace President Bush in the 2008 elections that he has threatened to make a dramatic late entry into the race.

Keyword: Threatened. It seems to me that attempts to win over voters by threatening them won't result in a feel-good campaign. Call me crazy.

Scenario:

(SFX: Thunder clap) Newt's goons grab prospective supporters by the lapels and shake them down. "Yer gonna vote for Gingrich, ya's got that?"
