<p>In 2006, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. "Lasting peace can not be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights."</p>
<p>In his new book, Professor Yunus describes the role of business in promoting social reform and his vision for an innovative business model that would combine the power of free markets with a quest for a more humane, egalitarian world that could help alleviate world poverty, inequality, and other social problems.</p>

<p>Climatologist Mike Hulme examines frequent misconceptions about the science and politics of global climate change.</p>

<p>"The Science and Politics of Climate Change" at the 2007 Battle of Ideas conference hosted by the Institute of Ideas. Panelists include Mike Hulme, Chris Rapley, Hans von Storch and Joe Kaplinsky. The panel is moderated by Tony Gillard.</p>
<p>The issue of the negative effects of climate change is rarely out of the media and is increasingly portrayed in alarming terms. Politicians of all persuasions attest to the seriousness of the situation and are competing to present their green credentials, alongside business, local government and pretty much every major public organisation.</p>
<p>But what does science tell us about how we should respond to climate change? Are scientists becoming involved in campaigning for particular political responses, and, if so, is this a good or bad thing? Is the time for debate really over, or are political choices being obscured by talk of scientific consensus? Are the threats so great and the science so certain that there really is only one course of action? - Institute of Ideas</p>
<p>Professor Mike Hulme is the Founding Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, UK, and is based in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA) where he has worked for the last 18 years. His general research interest is global climate change – the science/policy interface –but specialising in the construction and application of climate change scenarios for impact, adaptation and integrated assessment. </p>
<p>Professor Hulme has prepared climate scenarios and reports for the UK Government (including the UKCIP98 and UKCIP02 scenarios), the European Commission, UNEP, UNDP, WWF-International and the IPCC. He was a co-ordinating lead author for the chapter on ‘Climate scenario development’ for the Third Assessment Report of the United Nations IPCC, as well as a contributing author for several other chapters. He is leading the EU Integrated Project ADAM (Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies) during the period 2006-9, which comprises a 26-member European research consortium contributing research to the development of EU climate policy.</p>

<p><p>Poor child-bearing hips Hannity. He tried so hard to smear Gore. Doesn't he deserve something for his efforts besides a certain future in the Ninth Circle of Hell (reserved for traitors such as His Hannityness)? Perhaps, but 43% still think Gore should have won even after the Fox smear job, while only 26% say no. </p><p>Also Gore has a 58% approval rating. Let's see, 58-24=34. So Gore is 34 points above the fake cowboy. Wow, having the election stolen from him may be the best thing to ever happen to him personally (if you don't include the fact that he lives on the Earth, that rotating object the Sinkhole of 1600 Pennsylvania is trying his best to do away with).</p></p>

<p><p><a href="http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_101007/content/01125108.guest.html">This is so wrong</a> on so many levels. Rush:</p><blockquote><p><strong>Gore's going to get it because of the movie. He's going to get it because global warming is that liberal hoax.</strong> He's going to get it because he's criticized Bush. He's going to get it because he lost unfairly to Bush in 2000, in their minds. It has nothing to do with Bush. <strong>The Nobel Peace Prize has nothing to do with peace. I should be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.</strong> <strong>I've done more for liberty, individual freedom</strong>, and the promotion of that, which is what leads to peace, than anybody in this year's roster of candidates. <strong>I should be the recipient. </strong> I'm not campaigning for it. I say this only to illustrate how it's just been devalued, this whole Nobel Peace Prize has.</p></blockquote><p>I just laughed so hard that my computer had to tell me to stop. Apparently I was pounding the keyboard with my fist.</p><p>But wait, that's not all:</p><blockquote><p>“<a href="http://mediamatters.org/items/200704030001">My lawyers at the Landmark Legal Foundation are looking into the possibility of filing an objection</a> with the Nobel committee over the unethical tampering for this award that Al Gore is engaging in.”</p></blockquote><p>Here's the punch line: Those lawyers of his? They <em>“nominated”</em> Limbaugh, which was not valid, by the way. </p><p>Rush is more delusional than Ann Coulter believing she's female. </p><p>You guys can come up with more one-liners. <p><p>Excerpt from a <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=14&amp;entry_id=21062">note Barbara Boxer sent to her supporters</a>:</p> <blockquote><p>I just got a call from Vice President Al Gore. <strong>He told me that he needs to travel abroad tomorrow for an exciting and urgent mission that could result in a major breakthrough in the fight against global warming.</strong></p><p>Unfortunately, this means that we must postpone our Thursday, October 11th event with him until Friday, November 9th. I wanted to be sure to e-mail you tonight in case you were planning on attending.</p><p>While I am really disappointed that we won't see Al Gore until next month, I am thrilled that he is continuing to provide critical leadership to address one of the most pressing issues of our time. You should know that only the most urgent global warming mission has called him out of the country.</p></blockquote> <p>Nobel Peace Prize in the offing? Hmmmm. ::rubs chin:: We can only hope so. </p></p>
