This episode of Listening Post looks at the propaganda and pitfalls of reporting on and from the closed world of Kim Jong Il's North Korea.

For this week's News Divide, we peek behind the bamboo curtain and look into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

It has been described, by some commentators in the west, as a 'hermetically sealed' country, with no Western news bureaux.

Few reporters get access into this secretive state, but we speak to Al Jazeera's Diplomatic Correspondent, Mark Seddon who has visited the country many times, to see what it is like to report from the hermit kingdom.

The news coming out of Pyongyang is so restricted, that when their leader, Kim Jong Il, failed to turn up for the country's 60th birthday celebrations, the rumour mills went into overdrive with speculation about his ailing health. But where does the real story lie and how much truth is there coming out of the rumour mill?

Plus in Plus in part two we report on the demise of the US newspaper industry.

The Listening Post's Robin Armstrong reports on the ailing US newspaper industry.

This is a chronic affliction - both advertising revenue and readership are shrinking, and newspapers across the country are performing something of a disappearing act. Moreover, US newspapers have seen their share value drop more than any other sector in the media industry, papers are haemorrhaging staff. They are faced with a choice: either migrate to the internet, or die.

The Listening Post goes to California, home of one of America's oldest and best-known titles, the San Francisco Chronicle, to see if the US newspaper industry is about to publish its own obituary.

In Newsbytes, we look at a cartoon saga in South Africa; an inflammatory DVD about Islamic extremism; media coverage of the forthcoming Belarusian parliamentary elections; a tightening of the grip on the media in China and Russian PM, Vladimir Putin, who is said to be fuming that an exclusive interview with CNN was heavily edited.

Closing our show with this week's Video of the Week is a quirky viral showing North Korea's Dear Leader Kim Jong Il as an animated video game character. Created by a German entertainment show, the video puts Jong Il through a Super Mario-like sequence, complete with hostile enemy countries and nuclear bombs.

Watch it at: www.youtube.com

One of the most intriguing stories to come out of North Korea is that of Joe Dresnok, a former US soldier, who defected to the secretive state more than 45 years ago.

Al Jazeera's Mark Seddon spoke to Dresnok in a rare interview in Pyongyang.

Sixty years ago this week, North Korea emerged from World War two as its own nation.

And since then it's been one of the world's most secretive and repressive societies. It's also one of the few remaining communist countries.

Our correspondent Mark Seddon travelled to Pyonyang ahead of the anniversary to get an insider's perspective.

(August 28, 2008) The Democrats gather in Denver to sell Barack Obama to the nation. The $100 million spectacle of the Democratic National Convention seemingly blinds U.S. media to rising political upheaval around the world. Did everyone buy into the hype and hoopla of the Democrats' big show?

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTION: "How big of a threat do you think North Korea and Iran are to our country?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "I think North Korea is a threat in that I think they are building weapons of mass, ah- nuclear weapons, and I am a little skeptical about this latest agreement. We'll have to see how it turns out. We made another agreement with him under President Clinton in 94 and it turned out to be a sham because we didn't do what Ronald Reagan always used to say, trust but verify, we trusted, we didn't verify. Iran, my friends, this latest national intelligence estimate that they have stopped the weaponization, they are still moving forward with the enrichment of uranium which is the major component. There are two components, one is the enrichment the other is weaponization. Enrichment takes a long time, weaponization takes a short time. They could have taken a deal that would have had the Russian's overseeing that. But fundamentally what I see about Iran today is that they are still announcing their dedication to the extinction of the state of Israel, they are still supporting terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah, they are still exporting explosive devices into Iraq, killing young Americans. They are still trying to extend their influence throughout the Middle East. And so I view Iran as still a great threat to peace in the world, and particularly in Iraq and the region."

Uh, Iran, my friends, this latest National Intelligence Estimate that they have stopped the weaponization, they're still moving forward with quote enrichment of uranium which is a major component, there's two components, one is the enrichment, the other is the weaponization. Enrichment takes a long time, weaponization takes a short time. They could have taken a deal which would have had the Russians oversee them. But fundamentally, what I see from Iran today is that they are still announcing their dedication to the destruction of the state of Israel. They are still supporting terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah. They are still exporting explosive devices into Iraq, killing young Americans. They are still trying to extend their influence throughout the MIddle East, so I view Iran as still a great threat to peace in the world and particularly in Iraq and in the region."

I just returned from a weeklong trip to Seoul, where the big news revolved around the "Key Resolve," the annual joint military exercises staged by South Korea and its sole military ally, the United States. 27,000 U.S. troops and the U.S.S. Nimitz joined South Korean soldiers in war games and maneuvers across the Korean peninsula. North Korea claimed the drills were a precursor for a U.S.-backed invasion in the increasingly tense standoff over the North's denuclearization process. The North also denounced South Korea earlier in the week for going before the U.N. to get the North to improve its ghastly human rights situation.

Samantha Power, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and former Senior Adviser to Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama, revisits the debate between Obama and Hillary Clinton on whether the U.S. should negotiate with hostile governments without preconditions.

-----

Samantha Power on Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World.

Sergio Vieira de Mello was one of the greatest humanitarians of our time, and while surprisingly few people recognize his name, his role in our world becomes abundantly clear when you describe the details surrounding his death.

He died on the afternoon of August 19, 2003, when a suicide bomber detonated a truck full of explosives alongside the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, killing over twenty people working there for the United Nations. Vieira de Mello, the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy, was buried beneath the wreckage, under the UN flag itself.

Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World is as much a biography of Vieira de Mello as it is a riveting account of the last four decades of global conflicts and our attempts to understand and resolve them.

Despite the tragic outcome in Iraq, the life of Sergio Vieira de Mello yields vital lessons for us today, providing us with his unique expertise on how to unite as nations, rebuild our international institutions, and establish peace and security in those parts of our world that need them the most - Cody's BooksSamantha Power (born 1970) is a journalist, writer, and professor. She is currently affiliated with the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Power was raised in Ireland before emigrating to the United States in 1979. She attended Lakeside High School in Atlanta, GA. She was a member of the cross country team as well the basketball team. She is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School. From 1993 to 1996, she covered the Yugoslav wars for U.S. News & World Report, The Boston Globe, The Economist, and The New Republic.

She is a scholar of foreign policy especially as it relates to human rights, genocide, and AIDS. Her book A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 2003. She endorses the Genocide Intervention Network.

She spent 2005-06 working in the office of U.S. Senator Barack Obama as a foreign policy fellow, where she was credited with sparking off and directing Obama's interest in the Darfur conflict. She has also been involved with efforts to increase media attention about the Darfur conflict. In 2006, she contributed to Screamers, a movie telling about Darfur, Armenian and other genocides of 20-21st centuries.
