<br />QUESTIONER: ...You mentioned Chavez, Putin, and Ahmadinejad a few times. With regards to the Iranian issue, we're sort of at a cross-roads right now in what road may be taken in international relations with them. Where do you stand on relations with them?</p>
<p>MITT ROMNEY: I would be tightening down as hard as we can, diplomatic and economic sanctions on Iran, so that they know that pursuit of nuclear technology and weaponry is unacceptable in the world. And that's us, that's the Europeans, its getting the Chinese to come along with us, trying to move the Russians to do that. That takes a lot of diplomatic effort, a lot of arm twisting. But, it is, unacceptable to the world to have Iran develop a nuclear capacity.
<br />Now, umm I know that there are a number of reports that have come out recently that, most important is the National Intelligence Estimate. Don't, don't feel comfortable by virtue of just a quick headline reading of that. The 16 agencies I read, in that National Intelligence Estimate, say that Iran is continuing to develop nuclear technology, that they are enriching uranium. That they would be able to have a bomb as early as 2009, 2010. That means that, you know, that's not far off. You remember, this is almost 2008, in just a few days here. And that means 2009 or 2010, they could have a nuclear bomb. This is not a time for us to sit back and say 'oh we've got plenty of time.' This is a time for us dramatically tighten our economic sanctions on that nation, as well as our diplomatic sanctions.
<br />I would indict Ahmadinejad under the Genocide Convention for incitation of genocide. Let the world know and his people know, that he is unacceptable on the world stage . . .</p>

<p>And today marks the sixty-third anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima. An estimated 140,000 people were killed instantly or died within a few months after the bombing. Three days later, another US airplane dropped a plutonium bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing about 80,000 people. Earlier today, some 45,000 people gathered and stood in silent prayer at 8:45 a.m., the exact moment the bomb dropped in 1945.</p>

<br />QUESTION: "How big of a threat do you think North Korea and Iran are to our country?"
<br />JOHN MCCAIN: "I think North Korea is a threat in that I think they are building weapons of mass, ah- nuclear weapons, and I am a little skeptical about this latest agreement. We'll have to see how it turns out. We made another agreement with him under President Clinton in 94 and it turned out to be a sham because we didn't do what Ronald Reagan always used to say, trust but verify, we trusted, we didn't verify. Iran, my friends, this latest national intelligence estimate that they have stopped the weaponization, they are still moving forward with the enrichment of uranium which is the major component. There are two components, one is the enrichment the other is weaponization. Enrichment takes a long time, weaponization takes a short time. They could have taken a deal that would have had the Russian's overseeing that. But fundamentally what I see about Iran today is that they are still announcing their dedication to the extinction of the state of Israel, they are still supporting terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah, they are still exporting explosive devices into Iraq, killing young Americans. They are still trying to extend their influence throughout the Middle East. And so I view Iran as still a great threat to peace in the world, and particularly in Iraq and the region."</p>

<br />MCCAIN: " I think that North Korea is a threat in that they are building weapons of mass-, nuclear weapons, and I'm a little skeptical about this latest agreement, we'll have to see how it plays out. We made another agreement with them under President Clinton in 1994, and it turned out to be a sham because we didn't do what Ronald Reagan always used to say, trust but verify. We trusted but didn't verify. Uh, Iran, my friends, this latest National Intelligence Estimate that they have stopped the weaponization, they're still moving forward with quote enrichment of uranium which is a major component, there's two components, one is the enrichment, the other is the weaponization. Enrichment takes a long time, weaponization takes a short time. They could have taken a deal which would have had the Russians oversee them. But fundamentally, what I see from Iran today is that they are still announcing their dedication to the destruction of the state of Israel. They are still supporting terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah. They are still exporting explosive devices into Iraq, killing young Americans. They are still trying to extend their influence throughout the MIddle East, so I view Iran as still a great threat to peace in the world and particularly in Iraq and in the region." </p>

<br />MCCAIN: "First, can I say, no thanks for reminding me... jerk. Can I say to you, your question is very important because people have gotten the impression because of this National Intelligence Estimate that things are fine with Iran. Let me just say to you, there's two components, major components to building a nuclear weapon. One is the enrichment of material, which provides you with the material, and the other is the weaponization, the construction of the weapon itself. Now the enrichment is a much longer process, the weaponization is a short process. I don't know where the intelligence came from, and I may not never know because I'm not on the right committees. But I know this, that if you were enriching the material, which by the Russians would have done for them if they'd have been serious, and if you get to a point where you got enough of this material to make a nuclear weapon or weapons, then it doesn't take long to make the weapons side of it, number one. Number two, I have detected no change in Iranian behavior. They're still dedicated to the destruction of the state of Israel, they are still supporting terrorist organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah, they are still exporting explosive devices, the most lethal kind, into Iraq and killing young Americans. So, my friends, I am more than skeptical, more than skeptical, in fact I've changed very little in my view that the Iranians still pose a threat to peace in the Middle East and in the world over time."</p>

<br />MCCAIN: "I'm very worried about Iran. I worry about the impact of this latest 'National Intelligence Estimate' because it caused people to relax when I think that they are continuing with nuclear enrichment and they may have paused or stalled the easiest part, which is the development of the warhead.</p>
<p>"But I think that this country of Iran has announced continuously their dedication to the extinction of the state of Israel. They're still exporting those explosive devices. They're still sponsoring terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah and others and I think they are a threat to the world.
<br />"And I regret deeply that the Russians and the Chinese, but particularly the Russians, blocked significant action in the United Nation's Security Council. My friends, the Russians and the Chinese are blocking us on Darfur, North Korea, Iran, and other issues. We need to get together a league of democracies, countries that share our values, our standards, our beliefs, and act collectively together to try to stop the genocide in Darfur, stop the Iranian nuclear build-up, and stop many of the other threats to peace. And if you'd like to follow-up on that, I'd be glad to."</p>

<br />MCCAIN: "First of all, I see no need for a restoration of the draft. The all-volunteer force is working. The problem with the all volunteer force is it's not big enough. And one of the many mistakes made as part of the "peace dividend" by both President Clinton and President Bush was that we didn't expand the military. We didn't have a big enough military to handle the challenges we face, we must do that, we're in two wars. Um, I agree with President Bush we cannot allow Iran to have nuclear weapons. And I have many options, serious and effectives ones, that can be employed against Iran by a League of Democracies, and I've talked to the British Prime Minister, the French president, and others about how we can join a League of Democracies, impose meaningful trade, diplomatic financial sanctions on the Iranians and modify their behavior, so that they would not, so they would be persuaded that it's not in their national interests to acquire nuclear weapons." </p>

<br />JOHN MCCAIN: "As we improve the national and multilateral tools to catch and reverse illicit nuclear programs, I am convinced civilian nuclear energy can be a critical part of our fight against global warming. Civilian nuclear power provides a way for the United States and other responsible nations to achieve energy independence and reduce our dependence on foreign oil and gas. But in order to take advantage of civilian nuclear energy, we must do a better job of ensuring it remains civilian. </p>
<p>"Some nations use the pretense of civilian nuclear programs as cover for nuclear weapons programs. We need to build an international consensus that exposes this deception, and holds nations accountable for it. We cannot continue allowing nations to enrich and reprocess uranium, ostensibly for civilian purposes, and stand by impotently as they develop weapons programs."</p>
